2023 Band Pops Concert

The cold weather wasn’t going to keep people from heading for Remsen Tuesday night (March 7) for the Band Pops Concert! The Band Pops Concert was for 5th grades through high school. They are directed by Ms. Emma Davis.
As it neared 7 o’clock, the students began to find their places in the gym. Seven o’clock! Time to begin the concert. The 5th graders found their places and they began their first song, “Merrily We Roll Along”. On they went to “Love Somebody” and another childhood favorite, “London Bridge”. They proceeded with “Russian Folk Song” and concluded with “Mahnomen Harvest”.
These students first took a band instrument last fall and have come a long way. They did very well. There are 24 out for 5th grade band.
5th Grade Band members are (Flute)—Eibhlin Hogg, Sophie Juhl, and Courtney Medard; (Clarinet)—Katie Easton, Oneira Johnson, Cooper McKinney, and Mikayla Shay; (Saxophone)—Treton Huff, Clayton Jansen, and Conner Nothem; (Trumpet)—Tyson Carver, Ryan Dreckman, Brynlee Oswald, Logan Staab, and Derek Tentinger; (Trombone)—Amy Ahlers, Hayden Olson, Tori Poeckes, Isaac Schneider, and Luke Staab; (Percussion)—Preston Busch, Hayden Flewelling, Brody Meyer, and Aaliyah Porter.
As the 5th graders left, the 6th graders took to the chairs with their instruments. The percussion section was busy as the audience was introduced to “Dragon Slayer”. They concluded with “If it Ain’t Baroque”. There are also 24 band members in this grade.
Sixth Grade Band members are (Flute)—Jayda Decker, Katie Haaven, Chloe Martinez, and Kaydence Stites; (Clarinet)—Ava Frederick, Samantha Peterson, and Faith Spenner; (Saxophone)—Amaya Gengler, Charlie Murray, Ethan Steffen, and Nathan Herrera; (Trumpet)—Gavin Alesch, Rebekah Casson, Ashley Mouser, Bentley Reed, and Emmett Rupp; Cello player was Carter Cave; (Trombone)—Garrett Alesch, Jagger Becker, Owen Erickson, and Trenton Hageman; (Percussion)—Colton Heubrock, TJ Hermanson, and Lilly Olson.
There were 33 seventh and eighth graders that found their places for their performance. With a soft beginning, they began with “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” that led to the percussion section answering with drums beating. They proceeded with “I Want It That Way”. The flutes were busy with this song followed by the percussion section. They concluded with “Music from Beauty and the Beast”. If you had ever seen the movie of Beauty and the Beast, then you would recognize the songs from it. Soloists for the song were (Flute) Hayden Oswald, (Flute) Chloe Alesch; and (Clarinet) Annika Juhl.
Seventh and Eighth Grader Band members were: (Flute)—Chloe Alesch, Tapika Nothem, Hayden Oswald%, Ava Prescott%, Addy Ruskamp, Erica Specht, and Tori Treinen; (Clarinet)—Ja’shyia Caviness, Aubrey Dirks, Rachel Doellinger, Ella Draper, Annika Juhl%, Brea Nicks, Morgan Rupp, and Ashley Wetter; (Saxophone)—Aleah Lux* and Gracie Schroeder. (Trumpet)—Isaac Astidias, Jasper Lahouti, Brielle Lux, Elli Molzen, Jesse Schneider, and Aiden Shea; (Trombone)—Charles Easton* and Owen Lennon. (Baritone player) was Rylee Smith* and (Tuba player) was Nolan Carver. (Percussion—Behr Carey, Ayden Miller, Christopher Rojas, Cody Schmillen, Mick Schnepf and Peter Stevick.
Denotes Member of Jazz Band and %Denotes Member of BVU Honor Band. The 26 High School Band members, all wearing black, began their part of the program with “Just a Closer Walk With Thee”. While this was a solemn song, they concluded with taking the audience to “Soundtrack Highlights from Guardians of the Galaxy”. With flutes playing the beginning eerie sounds, the drums were beating in the background. High School Band members are: (Flute)—Caitlin Wetter, Hannah Doellinger, Allison Astidias%, Ashley Hurtado%, Caitlin Olson, and Lukas Peterson; (Clarinet)—Ellie Durkee, Leandra Klinker, Michelle Schmidt, and Luci Haaven; (Trumpet)—Hope Russell% and Olivia Flewelling; (Saxophone)—Jaelyn Kabisch%, Elsie Hogg, Brayden Dunn, and Dylan Stevens. (Trombone)—Josh Doellinger and (Baritone)—Eoin Hogg. (Percussion)—Haydn Addudell; Jaidyn Ballard, Carver Miller, Lukas Taylor, Jadyn Young, AJ Russell, Ethan Johnson, and Tessa Weiler.

We have a Junior High Jazz Band! “Chicken” was an intriguing title for their song. It was time for the audience to “wake-up” as this jazzy song was played! Soloists were (Percussion)—Cody Schmillen, and Mick Schnepf. (Saxophone)—Aleah Lux and Gracie Schroeder. They did well! (Jazz Band members are denoted with * in the 7th and 8th Grade Band member line-up.)
The High School Jazz Band began the Jazz Band selections with “Alright, Okay, You Win” with Saxophone Soloist, Elsie Hogg. Saxophone Soloist player for “After the Rain” was Jaelyn Kabisch. This Jazz group concluded with “Gandy Dancer” with Elsie Hogg as Soloist.

Then—it was time for the 5th-12th Grade Combined Bands to play “Beethoven’s Ninth” for us. This large group filled the entire area from bleachers to bleachers! It was great to see that many students that are interested in music. They have talent and they showed it Tuesday night!
