George Wixcel has sold his fine new residence in the east part of town to J.H. Goodburn.
It was 30 degrees below zero here Wednesday morning. We had been having fine weather all winter.
There have been fifteen marriage ceremonies performed in Marcus the past two months.

The Marcus school children and their teachers are at home in their new school here. They held an open house so the public could inspect it.
The Sherill’s Harp Orchestra played beautiful music at the Firemen’s Ball and the firemen believe they will clear $100.00
Miss Bessie Harvey and John G. Ohlendorf were married in the Methodist Church parsonage on January 15th with Rev. J.B. Walker performing the ring service. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Harvey and his parents are Mr. and Mrs. Fritz Ohlendorf of Remsen.

Hans Hadenfelft has sold his fine farm near Marcus to Henry Quirin for $100 per acre.
There was little coal in Marcus last week and the Marcus Mills were shut down due to the lack of it.
A sweet baby girl arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Art Swanson, January 14.
Wm. Hoxsie has purchased the Sjostrom-Peterson restaurant and is now in charge.
110 Years Ago – 1913
Marcus will have a moving picture theatre starting next week. It will be located in the N.T. Nash building on Main Street with Jim Thompson of Meriden in charge of it. It will be called “The Idle Hour.”
The Marcus Corn Show will be held here February 1st under the auspices of the Amherst Grange and Marcus Commercial Club. An evening of entertainment will follow the judging the Marcus Band will play with a solo by H. McLaughlin and a reading by Mamie Heline, a debate and other acts.
The marriage of Miss Mable Cora Nield and Lewis Grauer took place in the bride’s parental home, Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Nield. They will make their home on the Grauer farm southeast of Marcus.
L. E. Toner yesterday purchased of Matt Carey his E.M.F. touring car.

Josiah Reese of Alberta, Canada is visiting at the Charles Woodall and George Pimperton homes in Amherst Township for about a month.
George H. Peters has gone to Minnesota where he will operate a farm during the coming year.
C.W. Dorr has sold his farm implement supply business to Frank Porter.
Rev. Gilbert is expected to deliver the address at the Simpson Bethel Church next Sunday.
Beatrice Corbett, who has been teaching for the past four months in the La Porte City schools, is home now due to illness. She will be here for an indefinite period.
William Nocholas has been ill for the past ten days with an attack of the grippe.

Charlie Johnson, 88, passed away Monday evening. He is survived by four daughters including Mrs. John Holmes and a son.
The Farm Bureau sponsored an Old Settlers Night at Simpson Bethel school covering periods of fifty years ago, twenty-five years ago, and the present.
The Community Co-op Oil Co. obtained an option on the corner lot, east of the Overland Garage, to build a filling station.
Charles E. Ihle, 81, of Cleghorn, father of Dr. C. W. Ihle, passed away Wednesday after a long illness.

Mrs. C.H. Swift returned last Sunday after visiting with her parents at Crofton, NE.
Allen Kay, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Art Peterson, passed away Sunday, January 16. He was born December 8, 1937.
Recent bride, Della Juhl Gray, was honored at a miscellaneous shower in the Peter Miller home.
Audrey Smith is the latest victim to fall while skating. She is carrying her arm in a sling as the result of a broken cartilage in her wrist.

The Marcus Jr. Women’s Club met in the home of Florence Anderson. Ella Barwick gave a paper on “Hollywood Cavalcade.”
Lulu Dorr, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dorr, is recovering from an operation on her back at the Rochester, MN, hospital. It is believed that she will have to be on her back for six weeks.
Merle Baumgardner left from LeMars Monday afternoon for Des Moines where he will enter the armed forces.
Duane Beaton, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Beaton, joined the navy this week and will leave here January 5.

Mary Ann Bierman has been hired to teach third and fourth grades at Linn Grove. She will begin at the end of the present college semester at Buena Vista, Storm Lake.
The Layne-Western Crew drilling the city well has reached a depth of 618 feet, which is, thought to be more than adequate.
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Lundell of Cleghorn are the parents of a son, John Howard, weighing 8 lbs. 11 oz.
Junior Franck and family have moved to the tenant house on the Gerald Rae farm where he will be employed. Elmer Offerman purchased the home vacated by the Franck family and owned by William Walton. Mr. Offerman is employed at the Wagner Cash Store.
Teresa Meylor, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Meylor, and Patricia Muehl, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Muehl, are quarantined at their homes with a siege of the mumps. Mr. and Mrs. Francis Bierman are parents of a daughter, Judy Kay, born Friday.

Carl Klingborg, Marcus contractor, has purchased the Seeger building, recently vacated by the Malt Shop. Carl says he will probably use it as his wood shop.
Carol Galles has accepted the bookkeeper position at Dorr Mill and Produce. Marlene Meehan is the new office girl at IPS.
Mrs. Ray Quinn has returned to her position as clerk at Clarke son Grocery while her husband is serving a tour of duty with the Army.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Busch of Marcus are the parents of an 8 lb. 2 oz. son, Carl Michael, born Thursday, January 15. He has four brothers and eight sisters.
Matt Brady purchased the Conoco Service Station business here from Harvey Geibe, Jr.
The job of painting the floor of the auditorium of the new Marcus theatre will be undertaken this Friday.

Grant Hagey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Hagey, was honored at a family dinner and supper Sunday to celebrate his seventh birthday.
Voters of the town of Marcus will go to the polls next-Thursday from 8 am to 8 pm to vote on the Phone Franchise for a twenty-five year period.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Weber are the parents of a son born January 16.
Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Carlson announce the arrival, of a son, Scott Jeffery.
Mr. and Mrs. Merlin Garvin became parents of a 7 lb. daughter born January 10.
Alton defeated Holy Name in the Diocesan tournament last Saturday in 59-55 contest.

Bill Wendt of Marcus graduated from the American School of Auction at Mason City and will start in that profession. He will sell his stock and farm equipment at auction next month.
Mrs. Selma Pearson of Marcus lost two brothers in the past two weeks – Ernest Klingborg, 75, of Quimby died January 5, and Oscar Klingborg, 65, of Quimby died January 14.
Carol Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Miller, has been named the Homemake of the Tomorrow at Marcus Community School. Margaret Gravenish won similar honors at Holy Name and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cletus Gravenish.
Joy Bierman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Bierman, became the bride of Larry Reinert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Reinert, Monday, Dec. 3, at Holy Name rectory.

The December Knight and Lady at Marcus Community High were Darwin Bierman and Gayle Addy. January Knight and Lady are Doug Kuehn and Mary Ann Nelson.
Donna Jean Worden of Marcus and Phillip Kepler of Slayton, Minn., are planning a spring wedding.

Rev. LeRoy D. Frank, 55, died suddenly of a heart attack at Sac City, Monday, January 22. He was born and raised at Remsen. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Maurice Keffeler, and a niece, Mrs. Kenneth Ludwig, both of Marcus.
Marcus Eagles were defeated by Eastwood 71 to 66 in the finals of the Little Sioux Conference tournament.
Mr. and Mrs. Arlie Grage were among more than 400 couples who attended a national farm business conference at Honolulu, Hawaii.

The Marcus Senior Citizens will host a fish fry on Thursday, January 26.
Julie Chapman and Breta Oswald will represent Meriden Cleghorn in the Northwest Iowa Honor Band Festival to be held at Cherokee February 4th.

Klein & Wurth Realty and Auction announce the opening of their new office in the former IPS building at 104 East Pine in Marcus. Dave Bolfik is their salesman for this area.
Stephanie Seggerman, Sue Rosener, Peg Bierman, Janet Heeren, and Sarah Schnoes are the cheerleaders for the Marcus wrestling team.
Randall Hanson, Loren Mohning, Jim Pearson, Jon Stowater and George Engebretson have been appointed and approved to the Marcus Fire Department.
Marcus should receive about $13,840.00 from the Federal Revenue Sharing Funds.
35 Years Ago – 1988
Many local travelers were stranded in the third winter storm of 1988. The Cecil Irwins shared their home on Highway 3 with eleven stranded persons.
Dick Cook of Storm Lake visited with the Cleghorn Centennial book committee members, explaining procedures and costs of publishing it.
Amy Clausen and Katie Ellen Terry are featured in the Senior Spotlight this week.

Jeff and Julie Letsche are the parents of an 8 lb. 6 oz. son, Michael Joseph. born Tuesday, January 12. He has two brothers.
Dale and Rose Galles of Marcus attended the award ceremonies at Ames, January 8 & 9. Dale received the Most Valuable Partner Gold Sales Award from Northrup King. Co.
