125 Years Ago – 1896
The railroad company has enlarged the capacity at the stockyards and made other improvements.
110 Years Ago – 1901
Miss Minnie Clarkson was married to F.J. Cottingham at Springfield, MO on March 28th.
Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Seeger are the parents of a son born last Sunday.
115 Years Ago – 1906
Peter Dunn who lived north of Marcus was found dead in his bed. He died of natural causes.
George Hoxsie purchased the lot and barn in the rear of Turner’s store. He and C. Spenser will open a black smith shop there.
105 Years Ago – 1916
N.T. Wells, with Ben Hulley as contractor, has begun construction of a new dwelling. It is between his former home and Dr. Knox’s residence. It will be 26×30 feed and have 6 rooms and a bath room.
Henry Tegoning has purchased the William Day quarter section #14. Remsen Township for $193.75 per acre. Day bought the land 32 years ago for $16.75 per acre.
H. F. McLaughlin is remodeling the third floor of his rooming house and now has 24 rooms for rent. That is the old Loretto Academy.
Smoke was discovered issuing from the east side of the roof of the Lizzie O’Connel millinery ship shortly after nine o’clock last Sunday morning, The fire company was soon on the scene and extinguished the flames.
95 Years Ago – 1926
The annex to the Marcus Public School is nearly finished at a cost of $55,000 The auditorium will be used for the 1926 Commencement exercises. Regular classes will begin in the fall of 1926. The building was planned with an eye on the future of erecting a new building in place of the old south structure.
Elmer W. Holzapfel of LeMars has been secccured by the board of education to fill the position of coach and manual training instructor.
A wonderful time is reported by those who attended the Easter Monday dance at Ekblad’s theater. One hundred twenty tickets were sold and everybody apparently enjoyed themselves to the fullest extent.
The Marcus News Office has been busy turning our 800 new telephone books and the docket for April term of District Court.
The K.D. Bancroft Meat Market caught fire about 5:00 Friday morning and for a time its destruction seemed sure. However, Fire Chief Seegar and his crew succeeded in putting our the flames, thus saving nearly all the property.
90 Years Ago – 1931
Miss Florence Carey, teacher at Marcus #1 school and her pupils invited the public to social at their school 5 miles north and 2 miles east of Marcus.
Primary teacher Miss Turzah Lyle, music teacher, Edith Held and Stella Jones, 4th and 5th grade teacher, at Marcus Public have resigned.
Earnest Nelson, son of Mr. and MRs. Hjalmer Nelson, holds the best record in the county for school attendance. He has attened five years of school and never missed a day nor been late a single morning. He has missed only four words in spelling in the last four years.
85 Years Ago -1936
Frank Lee, proprietor of the Marcus Bakery, has installed the latest bread making machine on the market.
Mr. & Mrs. Tim Tracey and family have moved from Marcus Two. Into Marcus and are living in the house recently vacated by the Henry Abels family.
E.L. Mohr, general sales manager form the Kari-Keen Co. of Sioux City, manufactures of cold storage lockers, was in Marcus Tuesday interviewing business men and farmers relative to placing a locker here.
The Treinen house in the south part of town, recently vacated by Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Scott, has been rented by Dr. C.H. Swift.
80 Years Ago – 1941
Mrs. L.J. McGivern of Marcus was re-elected chairman of the Cherokee County Federation of Women’s Clubs.
A new Gamble Store will be opened in Marcus, Friday, April 11. This store is independently owned and operated by Leo Fredrick who is to make his home here.
The roses go to Ed Delaney this week for the installation of air-cushion seats with Monhair upholstered backs in his Lyric Theater.
Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Garvin have six sons who have registered in the selective service draft.
75 Years Ago -1946
R.L. Roberts of Los Angeles CA has purchased the Dierking Market her and has taken possession of it. He and his wife have 2 sons and are living in the Geibe apartment.
Mr. and Mrs. J. Peters moved to Meriden last week. They bought a farm adjoining Meriden and are living over the postoffice there while their home is being remodeled.
Saturday, the opening of Lage’s Cafe, proved quite a day in Marcus. They served ice cream to some thirtteen hundred people of this locality from two until five in the afternoon.
Marting Dorr, recently discharged from teh army, received word this week of the award of a bronze star medal. Martin is the son of Mr. ans MRs. Phillip Dorr, who live nine miles southwest of Marcus.
70 Years Ago – 1951
Doris Meyer and Marcus and Robert Stratton of Washta were married Tuesday, April 3 in church. They will make there home on a farm near Washta and Doris has a beauty shop in Washta.
W.W. Oliver, conservation official thought he had found a way to beat the snowdrifts in the storm recently. He drove his auto down the Rock Island’s tracks in an effort to reach the state fish hatchery at Spirit Lake. His car stalled and was bumped off the tracks by a locomotive snow plow.
65 Years Ago -1956
Lloyd Addy held a closing our farm sale Monday, April 9. Lloyd has been advised by his doctors to get away form farm dust. They plan to move west.

60 Years Ago – 1961
Emery Goodrich of Cleghorn has been a Rural Mail Carrier there since April 1921. He retired officially January 1, 1961. He was honored at a dinner Saturday, March 25.
Wallace Healy, 57, passed away March 29, after suffering a heart attack. Survivors include his wife, a son, 3 sisters and 3 brothers.
55 Years Ago – 1966
Ray Robinson of Tempe, AZ was a Tuesday overnight guest in the Wesley Hirschman home.
The Marcus Fire Department was called to the Bill Pedersen farm Friday afternoon by a fire in a pile of flax vales. No great damage was done, but the fire could have easily done, but the fire could have easily spread without the aid of the firemen.
Frank Burch of Marcus states that he is one of hte last fast disappearing breed of honnyockers. For those whose memory is growing dim, honnyocker was the term applied to perople who traveled through the west in covered wagons in search of homesteads.
50 Years Ago – 1971
Mr. And Mrs. James Alesch are the parents of a 6 lb 11 oz. son, born Thursday April 8th. He is named Kory James and his 4 sisters and 5 brothers.
On March 10, Gross & McCoy Inc, took two car loads of local farmers on a tour of the Oliver Tractor Plant at Charles City, Iowa.
A daughter was born to Mr. and MRs. Harold L. Johnson Tuesday, at Sioux Valley hospital in Cherokee. She has been named Amy Lynn.
45 Years Ago – 1976
Mr. and Mrs. Francis Hinspeter are the parents of an 8 lb. 12 1/2 oz son, born March 29th and named Brian Anthony.
Jeff Mitts is pictured in the Marcus Eaglet Senior profiles. Jeff remembers being almost left at the track meet at Sioux Center. He intends to go to Iowa State and take journalism.
Kay Brady, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Brady rural Marcus, was crowned queen of the Cherokee County Pork Producers on Monday, evening, April 5.
40 Years Ago – 1981
The Cleghorn City Council voted to sell the clay dirt at the lagoon. Money received will be placed in a fund for a library / community center building.
Lisa Birch and Jay Wolf were chosen as royalty for the Meriden-Cleghorn prom with “It’s Just a Fantasy” as the theme.
35 Years Ago – 1986
Karla Chase, Dan Gross and Kevin Lux, are pictured in the M-C Senior Spotlight. Mike Moats and Terry Townsend are in the Marcus Eaglet Spotlight. All plan further education.
USM Pvt. Gary Powel, a 1985 graduate of Marcus Community School completed 11 weeks of training at the USMC Recruit Depot, San Diego, CA he has a four year enlistment.
Mr. and Mrs. Lester Sanow of Remsen will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on April 13 at the Remsen shelter house at Beck’s park.
Kyle and Sandy Tapper are proud to announce the arrival of a son born on Friday, April 4. He has been named Cory Jon.
30 Years Ago – 1991
Gina Geerdes will be the Manager at the Marcus pool this year with lifeguards, Ali Smith, Dawn Sanow, Jennifer Horstman, Dennis Meister, Amy Rupp and Matt Wiebersch.
25 Years Ago – 1996
Charles and Vernace Miller will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary at Mt. Pleasant Church, Sunday, April 21 with an Open House, hosted by their families.
20 Years Ago – 2001
Andy Rupp, Lisa Spencer, Becky Tapper and Barb Stodden are pictured in the MMC Insider’s Finally Done in 2001”
A huge crowd attended the meeting of the Little Sioux Corn Processors in the Marcus Community Center Friday evening April 6. The proposed plant will be built on 80 acres of land 2 miles east of Marcus by the railroad tracks.
Helen Gates was honored on her 85th birthday with a party held in the Marcus Community Center hosted by her nine children and their families.
