125 Years Ago – 1896
A bright baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Otis Briggs in Amherst Township last Saturday.
Katie Cronin of Marcus and Stephen Clifford of Sheldon were married Tuesday at 9 a.m. in Holy Name Church with Father O’Reilly officiating.
110 Years Ago – 1901
There were 30 carloads of stock shipped from Marcus to Chicago in 3 days.
Miss Josie Connolly and William H. Nagel were wed in Marcus Holy Name Church by Father O’Reilly, Wednesday, April 17th.
John H. Miller, sewing machine repairman, has rented the store room next to the barber shop on the east side of Marcus Main Street. He advertises that his repairs make your machine better than new, or no pay.
105 Years Ago – 1916
The Marcus Catholic congregation have built a new church, costing $45,000, a new school at $25,000 and a new parsonage at $7,000.
April 14th was clean -up day at Simpson Bethel School. The school and yards were cleaned and raked.
95 Years Ago – 1926
Nagel Bros. are now dealing for the Hudson Essex Agency, along with their produce business. They have already sold an Essex Coach and a Hudson Six.
The Thompson Motor Co. of Marcus list a new Chevrolet Touring Car at $510.
90 Years Ago – 1931
Miss Mildred Mossman of Marcus and a student in Morningside College is studying voice with Prof. McCukken. She sang songs over KSCJ Thursday evening during the Morningside Hour.
Mr. and Mrs. A.I. Birch and family closed their home Marcus and moved to their farm in Tilden Township for the summer.
85 Years Ago -1936
Miss Clover Rees, 18 of Marcus and Lester Sanow, 23, of Branson, were married Tuesday in Sioux City.
The Alfred Dorr home is quarantined for scarlet fever as Barbara, Beverly and Dick are ill with the disease.
80 Years Ago – 1941
Excavation for the new Marcus City Hall is well under way. The old water tower has been demolished and the bricks will be used in the construction of the City Hall.
Arnold Berglund is confined to his home with the mumps.
75 Years Ago -1946
Donnin Ames resumed his job as bookkeeper at the Sioux City Country Club after serving in the armed forces. He was employed there before he answered the call to serve his country.
Vernon Hueser, former Marcusite, is playing center on the Tennessee Volunteers football team. He is a 1948 graduate of Marcus Public and played center on the football team.
70 Years Ago – 1951
The senior class at Holy Name are practicing for the play, “Meet Me In St. Louis”, which will be presented in the near future.
Harold Wood, former superintendent of Marcus Public School, has been released from Des Moines hospital, where he was treated for heart trouble. He is confined to his home and will have to take it easy for some time.
65 Years Ago -1956
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Cannon, new operators of the East Side Tavern and Café, have moved into the Straub house 2 blocks east of Main Street.
The Martha Society of the Presbyterian Church at Cleghorn honored the choir members with a dinner in appreciation of their faithfulness.
60 Years Ago – 1961
Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Miller are the parents of a son born Saturday, April 8, named Brian Dale.
The Marcus Community School will present their Spring Concert with 300 students participating. It will be directed by Mrs. Maurine Burse.
55 Years Ago – 1966
Jon Mitts of Central City, IA is the new superintendent of Marcus Community Schools. He and his wife are the parents of 3 sons, Jeff, Steve and Mark. Jim Lens will be elementary principal and Jerome Martin will move from 7th grade teach to high school science.
Laurence Rassel has purchased the Reinert Garage from Larry Reinert. He has taken charge and will offer the same radiator service along with truck, auto and tractor service.
50 Years Ago – 1971
Mary Wurth of Marcus and Larry Leonard, formerly of Solon, IA are planning a July 24th wedding
Mr. and Mrs. Jim Hoefling and their seven children placed first in the Family Group Category at the Marcus Centennial Style Show.
45 Years Ago – 1976
The Cleghorn City Council voted to replace six existing windows, 8×4 ft, opening with metal frame double windows in the Cleghorn Shelter house at a cost of $1,374.
Becky Schmillen and Kathy Dunn are featured in the Marcus Eaglet Senior Column.
The large 3 story home, known as the Marcus Hotel and its antiques furnishings will be sold at public auction by its owner, Mrs. Bess Nelson on Friday, April 23rd.
40 Years Ago – 1981
Jane Cronin of Marcus and Michael Gerald Blee of Minneapolis, MN are planning an August 15th Wedding.
Michelle Schroeder of Marcus and Kenneth Wurth of Remsen were married in Marcus Holy Name Church. They will make their home in Remsen where he is a in farming.
35 Years Ago – 1986
Elizabeth Exline of Newark, DE and Robert Horstman of Marcus are planning a July 5th wedding in Newark. Both are CPA’s.
Julie Cline, June Pallesen, Terri Frank, Karla Ruden, and Brian Tracey are featured in the Marcus Eaglet Senior Spotlight.
30 Years Ago – 1991
Fred Zangger, 69 who was born in and raised in the Marcus area, passed away Monday, April 8 in California. He was a 1940 graduate of Marcus Holy Name High and served in the US Marine Corps in WWII.
Mike Mayer of Marcus has been accepted into the Farm Management Program for the Fall term at Iowa Lakes Community College.
25 Years Ago – 1996
Rich Ruden received a gold watch from Fire Chief John Ryan for his 24+ years of dedicated service with the Marcus Fire Department.
Monday, April 15th, local residents woke ip to a winter wonderland as we received about 4 inches of snow.
20 Years Ago – 2001
Matt Klingenberg and Mike Mittelstadt, both freshmen at MMC, are the only two students out for both golf and track.
The Grand Meadow Heritage Players will present, “Dirty Work at the Crossroads” the first two weekends in May in the Grand Meadow Barn.
Leon Pottebaum of Granville was honored for 25 years of service at the Marcus Lumber Company.
