Personal Mention
by Elaine Rassel Here’s hoping you all had a blessed Easter! We have gone through a lot in the last year due to COVID-19. Many people’s lives have been changed because of this. Hopefully this year will be much better.
In a normal year, more than 16 billion jelly beans are made for the Easter season. It’s unknown how the pandemic might have affected that number this past year. According to the National confectioners Association, jelly beans became an Easter tradition in the 1930’s thanks to their egg-like shape. The Easter Bunny would deliver jelly beans along with eggs because of their similarities.
There was a list of the most popular jelly beans. Is your favorite one on this list? (1) Cinnamon, (2) Black licorice, (3) Buttered popcorn, (4) Cherry, (5) Juicy pear,(6) (Coffee), (7) Watermelon, (8) Root beer, (9) Cotton candy, (10) Orange, (11) Sour, (12) Coconut, (13) Toasted marshmallow, (14) Chocolate, (15) Green apple, (16) Blueberry, (17) Strawberry, (18) Grape, (19) Banana, (20) Bubble gum, and (21) Red apple.
The drive-thru supper benefit for Marcus Fire Dept. member, Chris Johnson and wife, Jamie hosted by the Fire Department on Monday night, was a big success! They ran out of food early!
Monday, (March 29) had temperatures close to 80 degrees! Many people were seen raking and of course, there was a smell in the air of wet leaves that were set on fire. Some of these people evidently don’t know there is a burning ordinance in Marcus. There is to be NO burning until April 15. Because no one ever says anything about this burning done before the “time”, the burning people will continue. Evidently they don’t understand that there are people on oxygen or those that can’t stand the burning smell (that sometimes continues throughout the after midnight hours), but as long as they aren’t one of these, no consideration is taken for others. There is a place to take your rakings to_known as the city dump that is located west of town. If you have no way of getting them there, there are people that would gladly pick up your rakings when they go to get rid of theirs at the dump. There are some towns where there is NO burning at any one time during the year. We could be one of these in the near future if people continue to break rules.
I talked to Ila O’Brien (in Tennessee) and asked about the weather there. Tuesday it was very warm and Wednesday it was time for a jacket. There had been some flooding in the lower areas_she lives in higher area. It sounded like Alabama was getting the worst end of what had been going on weather wise.
Thursday evening Bethany was running down the stairs saying something about that someone (I didn’t hear who) had probably broken his leg and had to go to ER. When I asked Zachary “who” it was, (he was on the phone talking to someone) all he could say was that it didn’t concern me. I finished up in the kitchen and then I called Jeanette. I was hoping it wasn’t Steve or how would the newspapers get delivered??
When I called, Steve answered. I asked him if he was at ER? He replied kind of dense like, “No, should I have been?” Well, I found out it wasn’t him so who was it? About 10:30, Bethany came home and I found out it was Bensen. He had gone down the stairs and hadn’t seen Gracelyn’s boot lying on the step. Yes, he does have a fractured ankle. He came home on crutches, but was at our house on Saturday night with a boot.
That afternoon, he had been with Zachary checking out “grass” at the cemetery and later came home and was enjoying playing a bowling game (on television) with Zachary who wasn’t too happy as Bensen was really getting strikes!
We are planning a cook-out at Jeanette’s on Easter night. The weather is supposed to be good for outdoor cooking! I got up at 3 a.m. and got things ready to eat for supper.
As I was printing out the article on Mental Health (I hope there is room for this), I had a problem with it “getting lost and couldn’t be recovered”. I finally got it back and found there were four other articles that were lost. I don’t know what is happening, but I do know that it is upsetting to me when this happens.
Another children’s book, other than some of Dr. Seuss’ books, has been pulled from the shelf. This time it is Captain Underpants’ book. The author apologizes for what is called “passive racism”. He says he never intended his book to have any racism in it. Any remark taken as this, was not meant to taken out of content and seen in a different way.
This isn’t the first time or maybe the last time that what was said or written has been taken another way to satisfy the person who is looking for ways to continue what has happened to our country as of late. It is getting to the point that a person shouldn’t open his/her mouth to speak about anything, for fear what they say could be taken the wrong way. I don’t know if what is happening to our country right now has come out of the accident that has gone to court and the recent trial we have been seeing on television or did the pandemic have anything to do with people finding fault with everything to satisfy their needs?
My favorite book of Dr. Seuss is “Are You My Mother”? I certainly hope this book doesn’t get taken from the shelf. You might ask, “for what reason”? Well, there is a bird that wears a headscarf. Hopefully people that have worn or are wearing a head scarf, don’ t think Dr. Seuss was making “fun” of them and invading their personal life.
I will leave you with this quote from Studs Terkel (1912-2008) American journalist: “I want people to talk to one another no matter what their difference of opinion might be.”
