125 Years Ago – 1896
Colling and Donner advertise farm machinery, McCormick binders and mower and Rock Island Buggies.
Mr. Allen, one of our druggists has connected the office of Dr. Fry with his residence, via phone, and it works like a charm.
110 Years Ago – 1901
A total of 98 carloads of livestock departed form the Marcus depot for Chicago and Sioux City during the month of March. Forty seven cars of cattle, 19 cars of hogs and one load of horses went to Chicago and 31 cars of hogs went to Sioux City.
The old building erected by pioneer, John Hyndman, just north of the Marcus News, is on wheels and will be moved. A new brick building will replace it.
115 Years Ago – 1906
John Hammam and wife closed the bowling alley here and moved to Remsen. He said the bowling business was not a paying proposition.
105 Years Ago – 1916
Mr. and Mrs. Francis Coburn are the parents of a little son born April 1st.
Henry Abels is building a barn on his property in east Marcus.
95 Years Ago – 1926
Catherine Woods, 8th grade student at Marcus Public School, placed first at the Cherokee County Contest and will go to Des Moines April 17 to participate in the State Contest. Lawrence Flanagan of Marcus Holy Name placed third in the country match.
90 Years Ago – 1931
The annual Marcus Picnic in California was attended by many former residents. It was held at Brookside Park, Pasadena, CA
Nagel Bros, announce Thursday, April 9th as the opening of the remodeled Japanese Gardens. There will be a dance floor and a balcony for eating.
The indoor golf course, operated for the past winter by Nagel Bros., has been reconstruced and will now feature carabet dances and will be known as the Japanese Rose Garden.
Mr. and Mrs. C.V. Peters returned Friday from a three month’s trip to Florida.
85 Years Ago -1936
Harry Baumgardner has opened a new barber shop in the apartment over the Bancroft Market.
Paul Norris, a 6th grade student in Holy Name School in Marcus, placed second in the Cherokee County Contest. Maxine Kirchooff of Amherst #1 part in the Interstate Spelling Contest in Sioux City, Friday, April 17.
80 Years Ago – 1941
Miss Vida Nelson, grammar and history teacher at Marcus Public has resigned, effective immediately, due to her illness. Mrs. Loren Parker of Cherokee will fill the vacancy.
Marcus is please to have Wagner’s Cash Store, Nagle’s Hot Shots, Delaney’s, Treinen’s Market, Dierking’s and Straub’s Jack Aprate Store.
75 Years Ago -1946
Mr. and Mrs. Merle Sand are the parents of a son, born Thursday, March 28.
Bud Abbott and Lou Costello star in “In Hollywood” showing in the Lyric.
The new Lage Cafe will be opened for business this Saturday in its new location a half a block east of the bank corners in Marcus, annonces Herman Lage in a large advertisement in this weeks news.
Materal has been obtained for rebuilding of the IOOF Hall which was gutted by fire on April 5th a year ago. Work will be commenced next week. Tuesday fire threatned to destroy the new project before it was uner way, when a grass fire spread to the lumber stacked for the building.
Ben Beck, manager of the state liquior store in Marcus, has announced his resignation effective May 1.
70 Years Ago – 1951
Helen Alm returned to her Cleghorn home after spending several weeks in California.
Clark Gable and Barbara Stawyck star in “To Please a Lady” showing in the Lyric.
65 Years Ago -1956
Baumann’s Home Bakery in Marcus features chocolate brownies at 44 cents a dozen.
Dick and Paul Hatz of Remsen have purchased the Straub Locker Plant in Marcus and will take possession Monday. They do not plan to handle groceries.
Keith Tentinger, 32, was killed in a car accident Sunday morning, April 1st. Survivors included his wife, 4 daughters, and 2 sons.
Clarence G. Lighter, 78, former publisher of the Marcus News died Sunday April 12, in a Worthington hospital. He had undergone surgery about a month ago and was on the road to recovery when he became ill an died.
60 Years Ago – 1961
The Ronald Hinspeter’s family hosted a 48th wedding anniversary dinner in their home Sunday, in honor of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Hinspeter.
After living two years in Phoenix, AZ Jack and Fern Clarkson and daughter Tammy, have decided to return to the Midwest to make their home.
Emery Goodrich of Cleghorn who has been rural mail carrier there since April 1. 1921 has retired from his route effective January 1.
55 Years Ago – 1966
Mr. & Mrs. Darwin Frederick of Cleghorn are the parents of a daughter Linda Renee, born March 23.
Herman Fischer will auction off his construction equipment Sunday, April 17 as he has bought the Marcus Gamble Store and will take over May first.
A disastrous explosion neary cost the life of Clarence Van Velzen Friday morning, and did extensive damage to the basement and meat counter room of Bud’s Lockers in Marcus.
50 Years Ago – 1971
Mrs. Jane France will be student teaching under Mrs. Kloster for the remainder of the year. She will graduate from Westmar in May, majoring in speech and dramatics.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Geringer are the parents of a son born Thursday, March 18. He has been named Bradley Charles.
45 Years Ago – 1976
Rebecca Woodall, a senior at Marcus Community High, will attend the National College of Business at Rapid City, SD this fall. She is enrolled in the Airline and Travel careers program.
Merle Cave, 77, passed away March 25, at the Sioux Valley hospital in Cherokee after a long illness.
40 Years Ago – 1981
Avery Dick Ames, 69, of Marcus passed away Tuesday, March 24 after a long illness. Survivors include his wife and daughter.
Jay Wolf and Dean Rupp are pictured in the Meriden-Cleghorn Spotlight. Kelly Cronin is featured in the Marcus Eaglet. Jay hopes to become a pilot mechanic and Dean and Kelly have farming in their future.
35 Years Ago – 1986
Avery Dick Ames, 69, of Marcus passed away Tuesday, March 24 after a long illness. Survivors include his wife and daughter.

30 Years Ago – 1991
The Marcus Medical Association fund has reached 66% of their goal of $15,000. All of the money raised will stay in Marcus and it is very important to keep the facility operational.
Donald Gettner visited the MMC 4th grade class and told them about living in New Guinea. He showed pictures of living in a Tropical Rain Forest.
Tony Simons, Dawn Pottebaum, and Mike Mayer are pictured in the MMC Senior Spotlight. Dawn plans to get married and the boys plan further education with farming in the future.
25 Years Ago – 1996
The Marcettes will sponsor a Bridal Fashion Memories Show Sunday, April 14th in the Marcus Community Center. Dresses from the past, present and new ones will be featured.
Lyle and Bernice McIntosh of Cleghorn will celebrate 50 years of married life on April 13th.
20 Years Ago – 2001
Brad Cave and Dan Shea are pictured in MMC’s Finally Done in 2001. Both plan to attend college.
Wurth Hardware, Farmers State Bank, Pat’s Flower shop and First Trust and Savings Bank in Marcus have stocked a supply of the Marcus QQBC shirts. The QQBC will be held May 26-28.
15 Years Ago – 2006
Marcus Lumber celebrate the opening of their new 18,000 square foot showroom and design center on April 8th.
