105 Years Ago – 1917
Our Fighting Forces, a war picture, will be shown in the Idle Hour theatre June 22 to the public as an aid for membership to the Red Cross.
J.F. Collins has purchased a team of pretty Shetland ponies for his three children.
Robert Florine, who has successfully operated the Fielding store for the past four year, has sold to J.P. Marks of LeMars.
90 Years Ago – 1932
Edmund Frangenberg was struck by lightning and instantly killed Monday morning.
The community park commission is asking the businessmen to donate tables and chairs for picnics.
Plenty of rain last week – a good start in the cornfields.
The strawberry and grape crop in this vicinity is said to be the best in many years.
A.J. Lenth converted a hand power lawn mower into a power mower for Ben Blietz, our greenhouse man.
85 Years Ago -1937
Miss Marcus will be selected form the ranks of the community femininity in a contest July 1.
A Girl Scout troop was recently organized in Marcus under sponsorship of American Legion Auxiliary with Mrs. C. H. Swift as Captain.
Mrs. George Gibson departed last week for Belfast, Ireland, to visit with relatives there for the first time in 17 years.
80 Years Ago – 1942
Remodeling and redecorating of the Carmel Lutheran parsonage has been completed.
Mrs. Virgil Grohe was taken to Iowa City by ambulance Thursday after receiving injuries in an auto accident.
A surprise picnic dinner was held in the Emil Ebert home Sunday in honor of Marlys on her birthday.
Carl Anderson remarked after his recent trip to Chicago that farmers along the way were using teams of horses for fieldwork rather than machines.
75 Years Ago -1947
William Challman, who farms 11 miles south of Marcus, brought the Charles Woodall estate residence in Marcus at the auction sale. He paid $7,000 for the home.
Harold Petersen’s crew of men has completed the greater part of the north wing of the new Sand Seed Service building.
70 Years Ago – 1952
A brief but devastating wind storm struck Marcus and vicinity about 6:30 Monday evening doing considerable damage in town and hundreds of thousands of dollars worth in the adjacent farming area.
A farewell party for Rev. and Mrs. C.C. Callahan was held June 24 at 8:00 p.m. in the parlors of the Grace Methodist Church. A large crowd enjoyed the program announced by Mrs. Donald Beaton.
Mr. & Mrs. Melvin Mayer are parents of a son born Wednesday, June 25. He has been named John Carl.
65 Years Ago – 1957
A freak fire did a substantial amount of damage at the L.D. Simons home in east Marcus. The colored television set, through not turned on at the time, exploded or flared up, setting woodwork and drapes on fire.
Paul Harz, Herman Fischer, Edgar Hagey, Ray Gates, Loren Stowater, and Harry Nelson attended a fire department school at Ames.
Mr. & Mrs. Carmelo P.La Falce and Thomas left Marcus this week. They will be in Teheren, Iran, in the early part of July to make their home for the next two years.
60 Years Ago – 1962
Gene Franck arrived home last week with his honorable discharge from the army. He had just completed a tour of duty in Germany and had attained rank of Staff Sergeant.
Hills Carris, 55, a Cleghorn businessmen of the area, died last Friday in a Cherokee hospital. His death followed two and half years that of his business partner, Roy Goodrich, also a comparatively young man.
Mr. & Mrs. Jens Haahr are the parents of a daughter Lisa Diane born June 24.
Oscar Heline, Marcus farmer, took over his duties as president of Marcus Rotary club. Mr. Heline follows Jim Whealon, cashier of the Farmers State Bank in that office.
55 Years Ago – 1967
Suzanne Delperdang, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Milton Delperdang of Marcus, was named to the third term Dean’s list at Briar Cliff College.
The recently finished sewer system has been approved by the Cleghorn city council and is now in use. Built on an assessment plan, the sewer provides more extensive service to the people of the area.
Will Roethler, 86, died Tuesday morning, June 29, in Sioux Valley hospital in Cherokee. He failed to rally following surgery.
50 Years Ago – 1972
Joann Miller, Senior Citizen for July was born January 18, 1902 in the village of Beck, Denmark.
Mr. & Mrs. Alan Klein of Colorado Springs are parents of a daughter named Karen Lynn and has a sister, Kim.
Mrs. Josephine Anderson is now residing at the Happy Siesta in Remsen after being dismissed from the hospital in LeMars.
45 Years Ago – 1977
The groundbreaking this week for the Iowa Public Center to be constructed in Marcus.
Hesse Chevrolet purchased the property directly south of Community Co-op and had the house moved to the corner of North Walnut Street. For the present Hesse will surface the area with crushed rock and utilize the space for new and used car displays.
Reginald Pallesen has received the degree of Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the college of Law at the University of Iowa.
40 Years Ago – 1982
Curt Grauer was fishing with Frank Gilber (well-known area cattle buyer) and Frank’s two sons at Lake Benedict in Minnesota. Curt caught a Northern that weighed 14.5 lbs.
Jon Pedersen of Marcus has been named a Westmar Scholar for the spring semester of 1982 at Westmar College in LeMars.
Francis Wilberding, 75, of Marcus passed away suddenly Saturday at his home.
35 Years Ago – 1987
Michelle Cave, Marcette member, presented Superintendent Jon Mitts a check of $400 to help defray costs of wooden playground equipment on the Primary School playground.
Jim and Betty Pearson of Marcus narrowly escaped serious injury when the auto they were in collided with a big bull while returning from Sioux Falls last week.
Laura Petersen, 96, of Marcus passed away suddenly Saturday in Countryside Estates in Cherokee.
30 Years Ago – 1992
A mud volleyball tournament is scheduled for the 4th of July here, with team composed of 3 males and 3 females. They want 8 teams and five are already formed.
The Marcus Merchants won the Sand fast pitch softball tournament here by defeating Charter Oak in the final game 3-2. Jeff Nelson was the winning pitcher in four games and was named the most valuable pitcher. Greg Taylor was named the most valuable player.
25 Years Ago – 1997
Bernice Stephanenson, principal at MMC High School resigned after four years here. He has accepted a similar position at Charition,.
Cleghorns’s Ice Cream Days netted $1,000, which will be donated to the local fire department, for their newly purchased pumper truck.
20 Years Ago – 2002
The Ragbrai Committee would like any person or group or business or organization that would be interested in decorating a corner or light pole for Ragbrai.
Adam and Lori Frederes of Marcus are the proud parents of a son Tyler James. He was born Wednesday June 19, at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee.
