125 Years Ago – 1896
Mr. Skewis, the gentleman who is to operate the creamery here, is black after a short visit to his old home in Illinois.
The farmers have decided not to build a creamery here and will patronize the new management of the old creamery.
Collins & Donner, dealers in farm machinery, advertise McCormick Binders and Mowers, Cooper Wagons, and Rock Island buggies.
C.J. Jackson advertises 50 bushels of early Puritan seed potatoes for sale.
115 Years Ago – 1906
Sixteen cars of livestock left Marcus for the Chicago market Saturday night.
The city election in Marcus passed quietly; the weather was
school order for $515.00 to pay the last cent of indebtedness of the Marcus Independent SchooI District. A nice balance remains in the treasury.
Elmer Goodburn bought an interest in the Eade Meat Market and is now in possession.
Miss Minnie Clarkson and F.J. Cottingham were united in marriage on Mar. 28 in Springfield, Mo. After April 15 they will be at home in Ottumwa, IA.
105 Years Ago – 1916
Many voters turned out for a city election in Marcus on Monday. D. S. Twogood was elected mayor; Don Melter, H.H. Niemann, K.D. Bancroft, and G.A. Brink for councilmen; W.L. Gund for treasurer; and C.L. Flanagan, assessor.
Moves during the month of March included Walter Miller who moved to the place vacated by L.W. McCoun; J. Sand moved to the place north of town vacated by Victor Nafziger who moved to Wisconsin; W.E. Willey, Jr., moved onto the Willey farm.
95 Years Ago – 1926
Matt Y. Carey, 49, passed away at his residence here on Mar. 23 following a brief illness of pneumonia and complications. He is survived by three brothers, including John of Marcus, and two sisters.
Frank Lee of Grayceville, MN, will take over complete charge of the Marcus Bakery owned by his father-in-law, A. Rohner.
90 Years Ago – 1931
Ed Keleher was elected manager of the Marcus baseball team for this coming season.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Garlow welcomed a daughter, Joan Marilyn, born Mar. 23.
Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Reinert are the parents of a girl born Mar. 14, 1931, named Susanne Loraine.
85 Years Ago -1936
Bernard Seeger was elected fire chief; Peter Heinis captain of the chemical cart; Henry Zembsch assistant fire chief; James Hoxsie, W.F. Porter, and A.J. Lenth in charge of hoses.
Laurence Cook, 19, was injured on the Merle Cave farm. The four horses he was driving became frightened and threw him from the disc. His leg was lacerated to the bone and broken in three places. The knee cap will not function and tendons in the foot were cut.
80 Years Ago – 1941
Only about 20 feet of the old landmark water tower on the school grounds remains. By next week the tower should be all down.
Mr. David C. Griffith of Elkader, IA, has, purchased the Marcus News from Mr. and Mrs. Homer Hush and will take over at once.
Peters Bros. delivered a new Ford pickup to Donald Simons.
75 Years Ago -1946
John Delaney reports that the Marcus post office will be open for business in it new location Apr. 1 in the McGivern Building.
Richard Ament, S1/c. is recovering from an accident his left hand was badly injured and he lost part of one finger.
70 Years Ago – 1951
Lenora Sunday and Stanley E. Brown were united in marriage in Marshalltown recently. They will make their home in Marcus where he is athletic coach.
James A. Harman of the U.S. Navy is spending a two week leave with his parents. He will report to San Francisco for ship duty.
65 Years Ago -1956
Gene Tschill has leased the Nield business adjacent to Mossman cream station and anticipates opening a second hand store in the near future.
Henry Alesch has purchased the home built by Klingborg Construction south of Holy Name. They will move to town in the spring and their son, Jim, will take over the farming operations.
60 Years Ago – 1961
Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian women held a Mother-Daughter Tea on Mar. 16 with St. Patrick’s designs, etc., used as decor. Carnations were presented to the mothers with the most daughters and granddaughters there.
Linda Nelson of Marcus has accepted a position as girls phys. ed. and science instructor at Postville, IA, for 1961-62. She will graduate from Iowa Wesleyan in June.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Clarkson and Tamara are visiting in the homes of their parents. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Letsche and Mr. and Mrs. John Clarkson. They have been living in Phoenix, Ariz., for two years and have decided to return to the midwest.
Jeannine Woodall received her cap at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Sioux City, on Mar. 12. She is an x-ray technology student.
55 Years Ago – 1966
Tuesday, the first day of spring, started off fine and then ended with the worst blizzard of the year. A wet, heavy snow driven by 60 mile winds downed power and telephone lines. Many homes were without power for 22 hours.
50 Years Ago – 1971
Margaret Mary Ruden of Marcus and Philip Schroeder of Remsen are planning an Apr. 17 wedding at Remsen St. Mary’s.
Mr. and Mrs. Leland Hogue drove Mr. and Mrs. Bill Bass to Rochester last Tuesday. Mr. Bass had a check-up and returned home the same day.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Letsche were honored at a housewarming in their new Marcus home by their former rural neighbors. Cards were played and lunch was served by the guests. They presented the honored couple with a monetary gift.
45 Years Ago – 1976
Howard Peavey, manager of Community Oil Co., announces the opening of the new “Co-op Appliances & Repair” here in Marcus. In charge of sales and repairs is Doug Full of Cleghorn. It is located in the former International building on the north end of Main Street.
Karen K. Rupp, formerly of Marcus, and William F. Holton of Lincoln, Neb., are planning a July 3 wedding to be held at Holy Name Church in Marcus.
Jim Kunkel and Lorraine Weber rolled their first 200 games of the season and will receive the Bicentennial “200” patch.
