105 Years Ago – 1916
Dr. G.L. Carey & Miss Lucille Kelly were married in Bancroft, Nebraska on November 7. At six o’clock in the morning at the Holy Cross Catholic Church. Following the ceremony a wedding breakfast was served at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Browning.
In the election held last week in Cleghorn Tom Jackson, Lee Walters and George Fessler were elected trustees of Sheriden Township and D. F. Holly, clerk.
Mr. & Mrs. Mortenson of Andover, SD came to visit their parents Mr. and Mrs. C. Knudson and will be staying threw the Thanksgiving holiday.
Amherst items froze up this week when the temperature dropped to 8 degrees below zero with a snow storm that follow they say this will delay corn husking a few days.
95 Years Ago – 1926
The Marcus football team defeated Cleghorn on the home field by a score 6 to 0. Mr. and Mrs. Ned Bork are the proud parents of son Ned Junior Bork born September 29.
H.H. Petrich was injured when a freight train hit his Ford car on the main street track. Mr. Petrich injures were scratches from flying glass from the windshield. His car was badly demolished.
90 Years Ago – 1931
Miss Ruth Rosburg and Alfred Nizschke were united in marriage on October 7 at St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church by Rev. A.G. Mathiesen.
Community Co-operative Oil Co. of Marcus are Selling Goodrich Tires at $4.98 each for a 4 ply tire.
Marcus is celebrating “Good Will” Days October 16-17. The Special attraction is the Friday night football game against Akron at the Marcus High School.
85 Years Ago -1936
In anticipation of Main street being paved early next spring, the Marcus City council passed an ordinance at meeting, requiring all owners of property on Main between Railroad and Spruce streets to make water and sewer connections where such has not already been done. This also includes property east and west one half block from Main on Railroad, Cedar and Pine Street.
Irene Carlson returned home from Sioux Valley Hospital after receiving treatment for injuries sustained in a car collision at Simpson Bethel corner. Howard Carlson received a broken arm.
80 Years Ago – 1941
Melvin Door of Marcus brought a turkey to Des Moines to be forwarded to President Roosevelt to grace his Thanksgiving table. The bird was a 30 pound Mammoth Bronze.
The Cleghorn girls Basketball team opened the season Friday night with a victory over Brooke 39-27.
75 Years Ago -1946
Local dealers report that the coal situation is Marcus is in critical. It is reported that they will not receive any more cal for local consumption until the fracas is settled.
Mr. & Mrs. Herman Fischer and Gary were guest over weekend in Geroge Engelmann home.
The Marcus Public School has purchased a new bus from Evans Motor Company. The bus can hold up to 28 adults. The total cost of the vehicle was #3,500.
70 Years Ago – 1951
The Marcus Public High school was filled to capacity to see the Junior class play “The Inner Willy.”
Holy Name Church in Marcus was the setting for a lovely wedding November 3 when Lois Weber became the bride of Joseph Even.
Theresa Meylor was named the most beautiful of an outstanding selection of girls at the beauty contest staged in conjunction with the town and country quiz held Friday evening. Jeanene Petersen was second place winner.
65 Years Ago – 1956
Nagle’s is holding its Pre-Christmas Sale for Christmas shoppers, offering them an early chance to save.
Mrs. Charles Kohn entertained a social evening of card in the home of Miss Regina McLaughlin for the birthday of Charles Kohn.
Mr. and Mrs. B. A. Nielsen of Cleghorn received word from their son, A/1c Harold J. Nielsen that he was selected as airman of the month for the 802nd air base group.
Miss Mary Norris visited in the home of her brother and sister in law, Dr. and Mrs. L.L. Norris. Mrs. Norris is enroute to Florida to spend the winter.
60 Years Ago – 1961
A group of men picked 28 acres of corn for Andrew Cook Monday afternoon. Mr. Cook who farms south of Marcus, received a severe back injury several months ago.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Norris of St Paul Minnesota are the proud parents of a son, John Francis, born November 6.
55 Years Ago – 1966
A/2c Milton Wurth son of Mr. &. Mrs Wurth of rural Marcus left October 19 for England where he will be stationed for the next two years. Mrs. Wurth left last Friday to join her husband in England.
Mr. & Mrs. Ray Hanson of Cherokee are the proud parents of their first child, an 8 pounds, 12 oz daughter Michelle Rae.
The Marcus Fire Department had a busy time for a little while last Friday afternoon. A grass fire called a truck to the Glenn Ohlendorf farm and five minutes later another alarm came from the Kenmar Jordahl farm. A tractor had caught fire and flames reached a corn field but no great damage was done.
50 Years Ago – 1971
Mrs. Vance Marquis will be showing antiques at her home on November 9. She will be giving a talk on her antique glassware.
Mr. & Mrs. Floyd Rassel became parents of a 9 lb. 2 oz. Son Wednesday, October 27 at the Floyd Valley Hospital. He was named Cameron Ryan. Cameron was welcomed home by his two sisters and three brothers.
After thirty-five years in furniture business Nelson Furniture is Going out of business.
45 Years Ago – 1976
Mr. & Mrs. George Wynia are celebrating their Golden Anniversary with an open house at municipal building on November 27.
Brel of Marcus is having it’s Grand Opening on November 18. Don’t Miss this one.
Jo Wilberding a junior and Paul Wilberding a senior at Briar Cliff College were chosen to participate as a member of Briar Cliff’s student management consultant team to assist small business firms in Sioux City.
40 Years Ago – 1981
Little Donna Hansen, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Ray Hansen of rural Marcus has one super-duper radish. And it’s eatable too, all 5 1/2 pounds of it.
Marcus Boy Scouts will be taking care of the sign on Main street for the Marcus Community Action Club.
Sister Inez Delaney, 73, a Sister of St. Francis who served as a teacher and also managed the Assisi Heights boutique shop, died last week at Assisi Heights in Rochester, Minnesota.
35 Years Ago – 1986
Ann Bork will be honored for her 90th birthday November 23 at Holy Name Church basement. Ann’s 8 children will be hosting the event.
4 inches of snow fell with light moderate winds in Marcus this last week.
Mrs. Lucille Ott returned home after the funeral service for her sister Irene Hylen.
30 Years Ago – 1991
Jane Headquarters, a family hair care placed operated by Jane Ebert, opened for business at 102 E. Pine.
Nancy Hier gave a presentation to the local 5th grade class on bats. She started that bats do not hurt you and do much more.
The Marcus Boyscouts collected 979 pounds of food for Mid Sioux Food Pantry.
25 Years Ago – 1996
La Rae Wendt was awarded a Child Development Assoc. Credential in recognition of outstanding work with young children.
Marcus Jaycees are beginning work on the construction on a ice skating rink north of the new pool.
Jade Irwin, 6’1”, 162 senior end, was MMC’s only First Team pick in the 1996 1A District 2 selections. Jade was second in the district with 26 receptions, also in yards (404) receiving and tied for fourth in interceptions with four.
