125 Years Ago – 1896
The Marcus Waterworks Association held their annual meeting Tuesday evening. Benjamin Radcliffe, secretary, submitted the financial statement for the year ending August 31, 1896.
A large tower is being built on the engine house for the purpose of drying the hose.
A carload of chickens was purchased in this area and shipped to New York last week.
110 Years Ago – 1901
The engine on the excursion going out last Thursday morning set fire to three stacks of oats at Herman Treinens. Forty acres of clover were destroyed at H. Hendricksons. Treinen’s loss was figured at $350.00.
C.J. Jackson of Minnesota says potatoes are plentiful there and selling for 50¢ a bushel. Spuds here are rather scarce and bring $1.60 a bushel.
115 Years Ago – 1906
Dan Collins is on his 4th carload of Apron Spreaders.
Marcus Public School opened Monday morning with Prof. R.A. Fenton as principal; Miss Puffer, assistant principal; Miss Flannegan, grammar; Miss Loban, second intermediate; Lulu Hobbs, first intermediate and Miss Barr, primary.
105 Years Ago – 1916
Tuition to Marcus Public School will be $5.00 for high school and $3.00 for other grades.
The third annual Farmers and Merchants picnic will be held in Meriden, Thursday, September 7. The Marcus band will furnish music.
95 Years Ago – 1926
George Tutt, Howard Flanagan, Phil Delaney, Virgil Porter, Russell Anderson, Emil Anderson, Clifford Franck, Arnold Alesch and Melvin Dorr, arrived home on the Flyer Sunday afternoon after spending the month of August at the Citizens’ Military Camp at Des Moines.
George Pierce purchased the N. E. Love farm at Cleghorn and will take possession next spring.
90 Years Ago – 1931
The Morkrid Sandwich Shop in Marcus offers a plate dinner for 35¢.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hagey and sons have returned to Marcus after working at Rockwell City during the summer.
Miss Mary McDevitt of Marcus and E. Bond of Peterson were married Monday, August 17 by Rev. Father Smith at Cherokee. They will make their home in Peterson.
85 Years Ago -1936
Jean Harlow stars in “Suzy” with Franchot Tone and Cary Grant showing in the American Theatre in Cherokee.
The Lyric Theatre with Ed Delaney as manager will celebrate its 5th anniversary September 2nd. Employees are Wendell Grauer, projectionist; Luella Kuhl, cashier and Agnes Marie Hoxsie, usher.
80 Years Ago – 1941
Mrs. Catherine Keegan and S.A. Smorawske were married Thursday, August 28 in Marcus Holy Name Church. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Schmillen were their attendants. They are at home on his farm near Marcus.
Marcus Holy Name opened with 134 children in the grades and 50 in high school.They will have an orchestra this year and basketball and baseball will be extra curricular.
Dale McIntosh of Cleghorn departed for Wesley, IA Friday where he is a member of the faculty.
75 Years Ago -1946
The Colt Show sponsors are also interested in buying the 3.28 acres of land that the public school wants for a football field.
The attendance at the annual Marcus Livestock and Industrial set a new high with 6,000 people at the pageant, “Beautiful Iowa on the Wings of Time” Thursday evening.
Marcus Public School has a total of 238 pupils this year. There are 89 in high school and 149 in the grades.
70 Years Ago – 1951
The Rev. E.L. McEvoy has been transferred to Fort Dodge Corpus Christi after serving eleven years in Marcus Holy Name. Rev. Joseph T. Fitzpatrick will be the new priest here.
Patty Sand hosted a dancing party in the barn on their farm. A new concrete floor had just been laid. Mrs. Sand played records for the group and served lunch to them.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wallin are the parents of a 9 lb. 3 oz. daughter born Sept. 4th. She has a sister and a brother at home.
Mr. and Mrs. Orval Smith and family departed for Marysville, WA Friday where they will make their new home.
65 Years Ago – 1956
Chuck Sand, president of the Marcus Jolly Junior 4-H Club, was selected to go to the Iowa State Fair as a member of the county judging team.
Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Booth met their son, Dick, in Omaha Thursday. He just received his discharge from the army.
Richard Egan and Anthony Quinn star in “Seven Cities of Gold”showing in the local Marland. Jane Wyman and Van Johnson, follow in “Miracle in the Rain” and Burt Lancaster and Anna Magnani appear Wednesday in “Her Rose Tattoo”.
60 Years Ago – 1961
The Marcus Public High School Class of 1936 met for their 25th reunion in the Hotel Lewis in Cherokee.Their class sponsor and still teaching, Mrs. Howard Johnson, of Marcus was present.
Mrs. Maude Booth and Mrs. Emily Rothlisberger were Monday evening dinner guests in the Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Booth home to honor Emily on her birthday.
Mrs. Mike Kelly, nee Bridgie Ronan, 80, passed away Wednesday, August 31. Services were held in Holy Name Church with burial in the church cemetery. Survivors include her son and 2 brothers.
55 Years Ago – 1966
Floyd Grauer, Mrs. Don Grauer and Glenn Ohlendorf are pictured with huge salmon they caught while vacationing in Washington state. They said they had larger ones but they were too heavy to hold.
Fred Wilkens has been accepted as substitute clerk at the Marcus Postoffice. Fred adds this to his duties as an undertakers assistant, school bus driver, night marshal and farming with his father.
Janice Delaney of Marcus and Joe Durband of Cleghorn are planning an October 1st wedding in Marcus Holy Name Church.
50 Years Ago – 1971
Penny Peterson of Marcus and Robert C. Jones, Jr. of Gilman, IA, were married August 14 in Grace United Methodist Church in Marcus. They will make their home in Omaha where he teaches.
The 4th annual Seggerman reunion was held Sunday, August 8 in the Kingsley shelterhouse.
Mr. and Mrs. Bob Steck and family returned to their home at Torrance, CA after spending a month with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed V.Delaney and other area relatives.
45 Years Ago – 1976
Neal McIntosh and Roger Wilcox, both of Cleghorn departed Wednesday for the University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls where they are enrolled for the fall term.
Julie K. Roethler of Marcus and Randy K. Hoeg of Wapello, IA were married Saturday, August 7 in Marcus Holy Name Church. They will make their home on a farm near Morning Sun, IA
Jan Franck announces the opening of her beauty shop in her home on North Radcliffe.
She operated Jan’s Beauty Salon in Cleghorn. She will be open Tuesday through Saturday.
40 Years Ago – 1981
Francis Bierman won First in Class with his big taters.at the Marcus Fair.
Laura Wurth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Wurth, is going through anti-rabies shots as she was exposed to a cat believed to be rabid.
Karen Mugge of Cleghorn departed for Ames last week where she is enrolled in Iowa State University.
Jackie Hueser won winner over all as Old Mc Donald in the Kiddy Parade at the Marcus Fair.
35 Years Ago – 1986
Scott and Meegan Mattison of Cleghorn are the parents of their first child, a 9 lb. 3 oz. son, born August 3 and named Zachary Scott.
Carla Rae Johnston of Cleghorn and Eugene Beckwith were married August 16 in the First Church of Christ in Cherokee. They will make their home in Brookings, SD where he attends the University and she is employed.
30 Years Ago – 1991
Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Letsche are the parents of a 10 pound 14 ounce son, born August 27 and named Karl Jakob. He has four sisters at home.
Bernice McIntosh of Cleghorn was honored at a birthday dinner Sunday evening in the Ken-A-Bob at Storm Lake. They enjoyed the fireworks later that were part of the Great Iowa Balloon Race.
The Golden Opportunities Club will have a fun day at Jackpot Junction at Morton, MN September 26 and a day at Living History Farms near Des Moines October 9th.
25 Years Ago – 1996
Ann Lee of Waverly and Rich Seggerman wll be married October 5 in the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She is employed at Century Companies of America and he is a self-employed accountant.
Kathy Malek, Sonya Streck, Mindy Boothby, Tara Irwin, Lisa Pleuger and Jennifer Smith will be cheerleaders at MMC with Heather Rick as the mascot and Miss VAn Osdel as mentor.
Geraldine Boever and Peg Larson spent Labor Day in Sutherland enjoying the annual celebration and parade.
20 Years Ago – 2001
Our MMC Eagles flew over the Cherokee Braves 26-22 the second year in a row. Alan Olson was the workhorse for the Eagles making 134 yards in 29 carries. Jason Dreckman, quarterback completed 11 passes our of 20 attempts.
15 Years Ago – 2006
