110 Years Ago – 1916
Funeral service for Mrs. M.Y. Ames, whose death on March 2 came as a shock to the people of Marcus were held at Church of Christ Saturday afternoon. She passed away just 26 days after her husband.
The basket social in the basement of the Simpson Bethel church last Friday evening was quite a success. The highest price paid for a single basket was $2.25, with $44.55 being cleared.
100 Years Ago – 1926
The Carey drug store has had some very artistic work done in beautifying the interior of the store. New linoleum has been laid and Frigidaire installed where frozen delicacies can be kept.
Because he had a chance to read the Marcus News in faraway Sweden and found out how interesting it was, Aaron Alam of Cleghorn decided when he returned home he would subscribe for it. Mr. Alam visited Iver and Hugo Nelson of Marcus who were visiting 18 miles from the place where his parents live and found a whole bundle of copies of the News.
95 Years Ago -1931
The lumber yard and office building near the track owned by the Edmonds-Londergan Company, were sold to the Marcus Lumber Company and the Weart & Lysaght Company.
The grain elevator located just east of main street was purchased Saturday by W.E. Willey who plans ot operate the elevator.
Cleghorn defeated Marcus in the final game of the county basketball tournament in Aurelia Saturday.
90 Years Ago -1936
The annual spelling contest was held at the Marcus public school on Tuesday with the sixth, seventh and eighth grad pupils competing. Bernadette Given was the winner and will represent Marcus at the Cherokee county annual spelling match.
Catherine Garvin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M.A. Garvin is a member of the group of 38 students who are candidates for graduation at the Iowa State Teachers College Thursday.
The Marcus High School basketball team captured their second consecutive Cherokee county championship last Saturday night by defeating Grand Meadow 27-24.
85 Years Ago -1941
Preparations are being made to tear down the water tower which stands on the public school ground and make of it a community building to be built on the corner south of the Marcus News printing office.
Bill Muller was called to Iowa City last Thursday because of severe burns which his father, J.A. Muller, had received. He was burning grass and using a spray to spread Kerosene on grass. Someway he tipped and fell and was burned on his hands, feet, and back.
Work was started Tuesday morning at Holy Name school installing new plumbing throughout the building and tearing out the cement floor.
Mr. & Mrs. Ed Johnson were callers Tuesday afternoon in the Jake Roseen home.
Joan Grauer, small daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Grauer, has been confined to her home since Saturday with a light attack of the chicken pox.
80 Years Ago – 1946
Mr. & Mrs. Henry Goodburn returned home Friday from a visit with their son-in-law an daughter, Capt. And Mrs. Toby Schlinder at Albany, GA.
About 30,000 veterans are at a present registered in the state of Iowa with the federal employment service. The number of unemployed veterans is apparently of the increase, according to the agency.
Funeral services for Joseph Eiler, 67, of Cherokee, who died following a fall while getting off a bus, were held Monday.
This weeks News carries an advertisement for Emil Carlson’s farm sale which is to be held Thursday, March 14.
Mr. & Mrs. Silas Means of LeMars were guests at a family dinner held at the Felix Treinen home Sunday.
75 Years Ago -1951
Pat Carey, son of Mr. & Mrs. Ray Carey received a painful injury last Thursday while working on his father’s farm northeast of town.
M.J. Nagle returned home Monday from Chicago where he attended the Automobile Show and the meeting of Chevrolet dealers at the Palmer House in Chicago.
The house and acreage belonging to John Bentz will be sold at auction Saturday afternoon, March 10.
Mr. & Mrs. L.J. McGivern and Mrs. M.F. Joynt attended the funeral of Victor Sieverding, 57, of Grundy Center, Iowa.
Mr. & Mrs. Ervin Mayer & Paul and Mr. & Mrs. Earl Mayer visited Friday in the Warren Mayer home at Orange City.

Margaret Brownmiller, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Cy Brownmiller of Marcus, was honored at a birthday party Saturday, unique in that it was televised.
Mrs. Ernest Rubbert, 45 passed away Tuesday morning at her home at Washta after a five month illness.
The Marcus post of the American Legion has received a district honor, a citation from the national reorganization for its work among the young people of the community.
A Fort Dodge youngster of 14 had a busy night recently. He stole five automobiles during the evening, wrecking one. He was apprehended after being picked up while hitchhiking.
Classes were slim at the Oakland public schools recently due to an epidemic of measles. Thirty two cases were reported, with Kindergarten accounting for the most absentees.
65 Years Ago -1961
Robert Kelly of LeMars, who was prisoner of war for nearly four years during World War II, told of his experiences on Tuesday noon’s meeting of the Marcus Rotary Club.
Graduate basketball player of the Cleghorn and Meriden communities will be given a chance to show the youngsters how they did a two games Thursday evening.
Mr. & Mrs. James Lindsay have moved into the Sunset hill home which they recently purchased from John Dunn. The Lindsays retired from farming near Grand Meadow this spring.
Mrs. Minnie Van Sickle 84, of Cleghorn died Saturday evening, March 4 in a Marcus nursing home following a lingering illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Gil Wictor of Remsen were Sunday evening visitors in the home of Mrs. Harm Seggerman, Sr.

Sergeant Wilbur Kirchoff, 24, a member of the United States Marine Corps, was killed in action Sunday during heavy fighting in Viet Nam.
Sharon Nielsen, who will graduated in June form State College of Iowa at Cedar Falls has accepted a teaching position at Eagle Grove for the 1966-1967 school year.
Mr. & Mrs. Phil Brady of Marcus are parents of a daughter born Saturday, March 5 at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee.
Boys of Marcus Club Pack 113 and Scouts Troop 113 are selling tickets to the Buffal Valley District Scout Exposition to be held in the Orange City Community Building.
Supper guest Wednesday of last week in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Fred Hoover were Mrs. Clarence Woodall and Mr. & Mrs. Wesley Carney and Kay. The occasion honored Fred’s birthday.
55 Years Ago – 1971
The Iowa girls basketball tournament will have a special significant for the people of this community in that Mrs. Neva Witter will be one of the players of the past presented between the halves of the final game. She has been elected to the Iowa Woman’s Basketball Hall of Fame.
Herb Rohlfsen, who farms northeast of Marcus, cut a part of his left thumb off and lacerated another finger with his bench saw.
Harold Holmes of Denison was presented his eight gallon pin following his donation at the Denison Bloodmobile visit month.
Guy Simpson, 74 years old Newton barber, is still active in his profession in his shop which he has occupied for 25 years. He’s now serving the fifth generation members of some Newton families.
Duane Mossman, 65, a former resident of Marcus and a member of the 1925 years. He’s now serving the fifth generation members of some Newton families.
50 Years Ago -1976
There were 141 acts of vandalism reported in Iowas state parts in 1975 according to the Iowa Conservation Commission. The vandalism included destruction of park equipment, damage to buildings and painting over or otherwise destroying signs.
Mr. & Mrs. Albert Grauer will observe their golden wedding anniversary Sunday, March 7th.
Steve Stodden, heavyweight won third place in his class at state wrestling meet in Des Moines last Saturday.
Quentin Andersen, 73, of Aurelia, brother of Mrs. Herman Fischer, passed away March 1.
M. Ann Harman has been accepted at Lakeland Medical and Dental Academy at Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Arlo Driesen, Marcus local tractor puller won second place with the White 2-70 tractor in his class at the 5500 pound Super Stock held at the Indy Super Pull at Indianapolis Indiana.
Doris Wilson has been named Honorary Chairman for the Kidney Foundation of Iowa’s Gift of Life Campaign in Cherokee County.
Junior bowlers from Marcus Bowl raised pledges totaling $1,738 during Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Bowlathon held Saturday.
Mr. & Mrs. James Wiese attended their son, Tom’s performance in Symphonic Band at USD of Vermillion Sunday evening.
William and Ethel Benskin of Gutenberg recently marked their 70th wedding anniversary.
