110 Years Ago – 1916
Acrepe paper ball will be given at the Marcus Opera House Wednesday, January 26. A prize of $5.00 will be offered to the lady wearing the nicest crepe paper costume.
The barn on the G.A. Brink farm southwest of Fielding was burned to the ground last Monday night.
Funeral services for Mrs. E.C. Fry were held last Friday at the Christian Church, conducted by the Rev. F.E. Osborne.
100 Years Ago – 1926
L.M. Miller has received a letter from his brother, Alvah Miller of Lapore, India, stating that he and his family will said for the United States January 15.H. Drefke, manager of the Kay Theatre, announced a splended line of pictures for the future. Some of them are the Gold Rush, Little Annie Rooney, Don Juan, Son of Zorro, the Texas of the Storm country, and Thief of Bagdhad.
Mrs. Frank Shaffer passed away Wednesday evening at Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars.
LeRoy Hoops, 29, was severely injured Tuesday evening at Cleghorn when he was attempting to crank his Ford car.
90 Years Ago -1936
Dr. L.L. Norris of Pomeroy has purchased the office equipment and practice of Dr. R.P. McDonald. He will occupy the same office as Dr. McDonald.
The farm sale at the A.C. Stanborough farm last Thursday was well attended. The offering included 18 head of horses and mules.
Mr. and Mrs. H.W.D. Daubendick returned home January 9 from a months trip to south Mexico, where Mr. Daubendick was informed that the present economic trend and religious and social status of people in Mexico has turned somewhat communistic.

Mrs. Huld Pfaffle, 77, passed away Sunday afternoon at the Peter Grauer home after a brief illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at Trinity Lutheran Church.
Lois and Lorne Alesch were guests of honor at a surprise party for their 17th birthday given at the home of their parents, Mr. & Mrs. Joe Alesch, last Friday evening.
Mr. & Mrs. Felix Treinen and family, Mr. & Mrs. Merle Treinen, and Mrs. Margaret Hey and Keith were guests on New Years Day at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Paul Treinen near Ireton.
Mrs. Hillis Carris entertained the members of the Ladies Aid of the Christian Church at her home Wednesday afternoon.
80 Years Ago – 1946
Mr. & Mrs. Ray Gates and family attended the funeral of the latter’s grandfather, John Mohning, at LeMars Sunday.
Elmore and Howard Wallin have purchased the Lenth Blacksmith Shop, taking possession the first of the year.
Wednesday evening a group of friends met at the home of Chris Wilkens in honor of Mrs. Wilkens birthday.
Carol Schmidt celebrated her seventh birthday Thursday of last week with a few friends in at the home of her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Joe Schmidt.
Charles Woodall was a Sunday dinner guest of Mr. & Mrs. Walter Garlow and family.

Elmer Kamradt, 33 passed away early Thursday mornig in the Sacred Heart hospital. Services were held Saturday afternoon at the Nelson Funeral Home.
Dr. an dMrs. L.L. Norris and John returned home Sunday from spending the holidays with relatives in Jacksonville, IL, Waterloo, and Pomeroy.
Mr. & Mrs. Herman Hueser entertained home Sunday in honor of Mrs. Henry Sholly’s birthday anniversary.
Mrs. Selma Pearson was honored Friday evening on her birthday anniversary when members of her family came to extend their best wishes.
Mr. & Mrs. Herb Hueser were pleasantly surprised on Monday evening, January 8, when a group of friends called to help celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary.

Jerry Steck, operator of Steck’s Grocery store here, announced this week that he is compelled to discontinue operation of the business because of doctor’s order.
Cy Delaney, who was seriously injured December 31 when a motor scooter upset, is slowly improving.
Mr. & Mrs. Herb Hueser were guests of honor at a party held in observance of their silver wedding anniversary Sunday evening, January 8, in Holy Name Hall.
Mrs. Harold Stientjes entertained 10 girls at a party Friday after school in honor of her daughter Joyce’s eighth birthday.
A group of fiends and relatives gathered at the Leo Brady home Friday evening to surprise Mr. & Mrs. James Brady on their 42nd wedding anniversary.

Kathy, 7 year old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Weber if rural Marcus, is in St. Joseph’s hospital in Sioux City following a fall in which she fractured her left leg above the knee.
Evelyn Drefke, clarinet and Ervina Saner, percussion, were chosen to perform in the All-Northwest Iowa band festival held in Cherokee, Saturday, February 4.
The 1961 Homemaker of Tomorrow award for holy Name High School, Marcus is Patricia Geisler. She becomes eligible for the state Homemaker of Tomorrow award which will be announced in March.
Mr. & Mrs. John Clarkson left last Friday for Phoenix, AZ where they will spend 10 days visiting in the Jack Clarkson and Francis Clarkson homes.
Clara Luken recently received a 15 year service pin and a letter of recognition from U.E. Baughman, chief of the US Secret Service.

Francis Coburn, 72, lifelong resident of Marcus, passed away Sunday morning, January 9, following a long illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Gilbert Schreier are the parents of a son born Sunday, January at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee.
Mrs. Harold Johnson underwent major surgery Friday at Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars.
Mrs. Frank Prunty’s name was called last Friday evening for the $100 Marcus money prize, but she was not present.
Mr. & Mrs. Hans Rasmussen celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with dinner at Uncle Milt’s Cafe at noon.

Viv Francks spent from Wednesday of last week til Saturday as a medical patient in Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
Mr. & Mrs. Charles Gutenkauf are the great grandparents of a baby girl born to Mr. & Mrs. David Lamoruex of Rockford, IL, on December 29.
Mr. & Mrs. Leonard Bindner, Ginnie and Ann, returned home Sunday afternoon form a two week vacation in the south and California.
Mrs. Glen Ohlendorf was honored at a coffee Monday afternoon in observance of her birthday.
Member of the OAO Club honored Mr. & Mrs. Dean Berger at a belated 25th wedding anniversary party Sunday evening at their farm home.

A rural Cleghorn couple, Steve and Diane Pitts, are the proud parents of the first baby of 1981 at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee, Justin Steven weighed seven pounds, 13 ounces arrived on January 4.
Kory Schlenger was honored on his second birthday, January 1 by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Robb Schlenger.
Mr. & Mrs. Dick Pallesen were honored on their 25th wedding anniversary with a supper at the Marina Inn in Sioux City on Saturday.
Ann Clair, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Clair, celebrated her sixth birthday Wednesday, December 17. Games were played before Ann opened her many lovely gifts.
M. & Mrs. Leland Hogue were Christmas Day guests of Bill Hogue in Jefferson, SD.
