100 Years Ago – 1925
At a meeting of the Board of Supervisors last Tuesday, P.P. Holm, who has served as a member of the Board for the past nine years, has retired, his term having expired. He will be succeeded by W.E. Willey of Marcus.
Mr. & Mrs. Henry Abels, Sr., entertained 30 guests Saturday in commemoration of their 40th Anniversary.
J.W. Ryan is holding a close out sale Tuesday, December 29.
95 Years Ago -1930
Leona Bindner, student at the University of Iowa, returned to her home Saturday to spend Christmas with her parents, Mr. & Mrs. John Bindner.
Stewart Dorr, student at Concordia College in St. Paul, came Saturday to spend Christmas vacation with his parents Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Dorr.
Teddy Proctor is in Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars. He is suffering a relapse following an appendectomy several weeks ago.
Open house was held Tuesday, December 23 for W.H. Leonard, who celebrated his 81st birthday. Many friends and relatives called during the day to offer congratulations. Mr. & Mrs. Leonard are proprietors of the Marcus Hotel.
85 Years Ago -1940
Tom Birch has been called to active duty in the US Army and will leave for Sam Houston, TX. Tom has his commission as Second Lieutenant and has been on the reserve list.
Bud Snyder rolled the biggest score in league bowling last week on the Recreation Alley with a 243 score.
Gladys Jensen, Dorothy Bensen and Leonard Juhl will represent Marcus at the county spelling match in Cherokee March 7.
80 Years Ago – 1945
The Marcus Sportman’s Club is sponsoring a community fix hunt to be held Sunday.
The local basketball team of the Marcus Public Schools defeated a fast Cleghorn team Tuesday night.
Patty Norris, Myra Ament and Mary Folly, students at the University of Iowa, will arrive Friday to spend the Christmas holidays.
Iowan’s who grow flax in 1946 will get $3.60 per bushel, Minnesota basis, was announced recently from Washington.
Mr. & Mrs. Cliff Means left this week to spend several months in California with their son, Loren and family, and their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Tom Musselman.
Joseph Gutenkauf, MoMM3/c son of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Gutenkauf, arrived home Thursday to spend a 30 day leave.
75 Years Ago -1950
Mrs. Mayme Jones, 72 passed away while on a business trip to Cherokee Saturday morning.
Charles Beaton, 20, son of Mr. & Mrs. George Beaton of Marcus was admitted to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Sioux City Saturday morning with polio.
John Clarkson, Marcus grocer, was elected president of the Marcus Commercial Club at the December meeting Monday noon. Earl Davis was named vice-president.
70 Years Ago -1955
Mrs. Harm Johnson, 58, of Marcus died Sunday, December 4, at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars following six months illness.
An auction sale of household goods will be held next Sunday afternoon at the Marie Flanagan home in Marcus.
Mrs. Ronald Hinspeter won a dog and Martin Nelson won a panda at the drawing at Mouw’s Hardware Saturday evening.
Bill Wilcox, operator of Wilcox Produce in Marcus, is confined to his home with a seriously injured ankle.
Kenneth Dunn, 30 of Marcus died Sunday morning at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars following an extended illness.
65 Years Ago -1960
Bud Geringer has accepted a position as meat cutter at Hatz Frozen Food Center here. Bud has been convalescing from an injured back for several months.
Herman Treinen, 83, retired farmer and longtime resident of this community, died Monday after a long illness.
Winners at the drawing at the Nagle’s Apparel Shop Saturday evening were Arnold Carlson of Remsen, the shirt and Mrs. Charles Beaton, the dress.
Mr. & Mrs. George Scott and Mrs. Alice Neir were Sunday evening callers in the home of Mrs. Mildred Briggs.
Jean Baumann was a Thursday overnight guest of Ann Bortscheller in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Claude Bortscheller.

John Seel was admitted to Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee last week. Mrs. Henry Schroeder returned home Friday from Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars where she had been a patient for 16 days.
Linda Deichman was the winner of the child’s Corvette car given away Saturday evening at Nagle’s Apparel.
Mr. & Mrs. Wayne Roethler of Cicero, Illinois, are the parents of a daughter born October 15. She weighed nine pounds, three ounces, and has been named Susan Marie. Grandparents include Mr. & Mrs. Ray Roethler of Marcus.
Mr. & Mrs. Leo Schnoes and family of Sioux City were Sunday dinner guests Sunday of Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Dorr.
Miss Patricia Prunty gave a senior vocal recital in Recital Hall at the University of Indiana on Friday evening, December 10.
55 Years Ago – 1970
Open house honoring Mr. & Mrs. Fred Hoover on their 25th wedding anniversary was held Sunday, November 28 at Grace United Methodist Church.
Charles Davis, 86, of Marcus died Wednesday, November 29 in a LeMars hospital. Service were held on Saturday at Holy Name Catholic Church with Father Robert O’Reilly officiating.
Mr. & Mrs. Steve Sand are the parents of their first child, a son born Sunday, November 29 at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars. He weighed eight pounds, two ounces, and has been named Jade Allan.
Corinne Alesch of Iowa City and Mary Francis Alesch of Ames spent their holiday vacation with their holiday vacation with their parents, Mr. & Mrs. Leo Alesch.
An ad from IGA advertised the following items for sale: Chuck roast, lb., 49 cents; IGA tuna, 6 ½ oz can 33 cents; Libby’s catsup, 20 oz. Bottle, 39 cents; pork chips, lb., 49 cents.

Mr. & Mrs. Bill Tentinger of Kingsley are proud to announce the adoption of a baby girl, Mandy Catherine, Grandparents are Mr. & Mrs. Ray Roethler of Marcus and Mr. & Mrs. Roman Tentinger of Remsen.
Mark Bancroft returned home Monday after being hospitalized in Floyd Valley Hospital for the past two weeks.
Mr. & Mrs. Dick Ames spent Thanksgiving Day in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Tony Nilles and family of LeMars.
Mr. & Mrs. Andy Ballard were Thanksgiving dinner guests in the Jerry Ballard home.
Doug Grauer, son of Mr. & Mrs. Floyd Grauer, and Steve Beaton, son of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Beaton, have been accepted for enrollment at Northwest Iowa Technical College, Sheldon, Iowa. Doug will be enrolled in the carpentry program and sieve in the auto body program.

Mrs. Cecil Dorr, 61, passed away at her home in Marcus on Sunday, November 30, following an extended illness.
Ambrose Heinis will celebrate his 91st birthday Friday, December 5.
On Friday Mrs. John Sand hosted a birthday party for her daughter, Jill on her first birthday.
Hobby Club Christmas party will be Tuesday, December 16 in the home of Linda Spieler.
Mike Mayer was a Thursday and Friday overnight guest in the Melvin Mayer home.
Mr. & Mrs. Ray Roethler enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner at the Mark Roethler home Thursday.
