105 Years Ago – 1920
Miss Alice Brown an instructor in high school here, will not return to Marcus after the holiday. Mr. Nuielenberg of Orange City was elected to the position of instructor in mathematics and Latin to succeed Miss Brown.
Miss Hallie Garlinghouse married Edward Glines of Sibley in LeMars last Thursday.
Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Richards, pioneer citizens of Marcus, observed their golden wedding anniversary Christmas Day.
Fred Zangger is advertising some good dairy cows for sale at his public auction January 11.
90 Years Ago -1935
For the first time New Year’s eve, the public will be given a view of the new Legion building in Marcus.
Friends and relatives gathered in the Stanley Addy home Saturday, December 28, to help them celebrate their 25th anniversary.
Relatives and friends of Mrs. Ada Ilten were saddened with the news of her death at Cedar Rapids.
Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church Friday afternoon for Frank Brown, 49 who died at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Mr. & Mrs. William Kaiser of Marcus township are the proud parents of a son born Sunday morning December 29.
Mr. & Mrs. John Apel are the parents of a daughter born Sunday, December 29.

Dr. and Mrs. H. C. Swift are the parents of a son born December 23 in Sioux Valley hospital.
The dedication of the new basement at the Methodist church will be Sunday.

Walter Miller, Jr. who is a third year student at structuary engineering at Polytechnic, California came Saturday to spend the Christmas holiday with his mother, Mrs. Lillie Miller.
Roger Leavitt returned Tuesday from a thirteen day trip to points in the west.
Mr. & Mrs. Chris Reese and Beverly will leave Friday for Fenton where Mr. Reese will operate the Fenton Reporter.

The Sjostrom Grocery has announced its opening in its new location on the east side of the main business street in the building formerly occupied by the Gamble Store.
Mr. & Mrs. A.W. Jenkins announce the approaching marriage of their daughters, Helen to H.A. 1/c Paul Cantine, and Pauline to Max Hodges, on January 12.
Mr. & Mrs. H.E. Neir will hold an open house at their home New Years Day. The occasion will be in honor of their golden wedding anniversary.
Leo Franks is on his way home from Okinawa. Cpl Franks is one of 2,063 high point army veterans whom the “Magic Carpet” is bringing back to the states abroad the USS Missoula.
Funeral services were held for Raymond Barnes, 61, a lifelong resident of Marcus until two years ago.

Nace Colloins, 66 lifelong resident of this community passed away early Friday morning, December 15, in Sacred Heart hospital.
Margaret Greff was graduated from the USAF Officer Candidate School, Class 50-C and received a commission as second lieutenant in the Air Force Reserves December 16.
Carl Hagey, Marcus painter, bought the Alfred Chinn residence property which was sold at auction here last Friday afternoon.
Mr. & Mrs. Harry Hendrickson and Derald attended the graduation exercises of their son and brother Donald, who received his Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa State College at Ames Saturday.
Thursday evening, December 12, the Sand Seed Service held a dinner for the certified seed growers at Holy Name hall. There were 42 growers and their wives present representing Plymouth, Sioux , O’Brien and Cherokee counties.

Mr. & Mrs. Eldon Hansen are the parents of their first child, a son born Friday, December 9, at Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars. The new arrival has been named Michael Douglas.
Mrs. C.G. Lighter of Ocheyedan passed away early Thursday morning following several years illness.
The Marcus Commercial Club will be host to the annual Christmas party next Saturday afternoon, December 17.
Dr. Martin Joynt, 77 well know eye, ear, nose and throat specialist at LeMars, died Wednesday evening at the hospital.
Mr. & Mrs. Edward Meylor announce the engagement of their daughter, 1/Lt. Bernadette Meylor, to William Eagles of Binghamton, NY, son of Mr. and Mrs. G.L. Eagle of Lyonbrook, NY.
Mrs. Elmer Douvia and Mrs. Teresa Knox of Remsen attended the funeral of their uncle, Joe Pick at Lismore, Minnesota Saturday morning.

Rev. R.W. Meyer, pastor of Peace Lutheran church for fifteen years, has accepted a call to the Frist Lutheran church at Paolay, Kansas.

Reita Jan Mott, daughter of Mrs. Leslie Jett of Rock Island, IL. And Richard Segers, son of Rock Island, exchanged vows in Sacred Heart Catholic church in Rock Island on November 26.
Marlene Lauters, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Ray Lauters and James Boyle, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Boyle of Danbury were married November 12 at Holy Name Church.
A/3 Rick Ohlendorf returned to Biloxi, Mississippi after spending a week with his parents Mr. & Mrs. Edward Ohlendorf.
Mrs. Mabel Qualls was the honored guest at a birthday party held Monday evening at Hammer’s Cafe in LeMars.

Elmer Ricker, who has been hospitalized in Cherokee for the past two weeks, is showing much imporvement but will be in the hospital for a least another week.
Hans Rasmussen won a $50 Marcus money prize last Friday evening and Mrs. Robert Johnson and Cecil Dunn won tickets to the Jaucees pancake supper.
Mr. & Mrs. Floyd Rassel are the parents of a daughter born Wednesday, December 8. The new arrival has been called Jennifer Lee.
Miss Molly Fenton of Marcus celebratd her birthday at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars in LeMars Sunday, December 6.

The Marcus fire department was called to the Cecil Dorr farm an dto an alley in east Marcus Saturday by grass fires. They were extinguished before any damage was done.Mr. & Mrs. Pete Bindner are the parents of their first child, a seven pound, 14 ounce daughter born Friday, December 4 she has been named Gine Kristen.
Mrs. Jon Mitts was the winner of the six bloom poinsettia plant given as door prize at the Marcus Greenhouse Christmas showing Sunday
Warren Weber, local manager of the West Iowa Telephone Company, fell Wednesday afternoon when a pole broke near the Johann Miller home in east Marcus.He had a broken leg and dislocated shoulder.
50 Years Ago -1975
Mrs. Florence Ball died December 6 at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars following a heart attack. Mrs Ball was a former Marcus resident and operated the Marcus Hotel for six years.
Andy Meehan returned home Saturday after surgery at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Sioux City.
Mrs. Dorothy Radcliffe was honored at a surprise party Saturday evening at the Black Coach Spirit Lake.
Jean Helen Downey has been named freshman of the week.
Linda Lehnhoff received an outstanding on her Voice of Democracy speech for the contest held at St. Mary’s High School on Thursday.
45 Years Ago – 1980
Mrs. Charles French, 82, of Marcus died Sunday, December 7 in Sioux Valley Hospital, Cherokee, after a brief illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Lee Mohning are proud to announce the arrival of a son, Justin Louis, Justin was born October 20 and weighed six pounds, 14 ounces.
Barbara Hihbach, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Hohbach, was awarded a music scholarship from Buena Vista College.
Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Reinholdt and Mr. & Mrs. John Leavitt were Sunday afternoon callers of Mr. & Mrs. Roger Leavitt.
