105 Years Ago – 1920
C.A. Crocker and Frank Crocker, joint owners of the 162 acres tract of land known at the Crocker farm five miles south of Marcus in Amherst Township has been sold to H. Ohlendorf for $425 per acre.
Steps were taken at a meeting of the Red Cross to start raising $20,000 fund for the construction of a memorial building in Marcus.
Mrs. G.A. Brink was elected as Worthy Matron of the O.E.S.
100 Years Ago – 1925
The Ekbaled Theatre, opened here by O.W. Ekblad last May is undergoing some improvements. The building is being plastered and a steam heating system will be installed.
John Ernester of Hollywood, CA has continued the Marcus News. He has subscribed since the first issue in 1883.
Corn is down to 60 cents a bushel since the market is flooded with corn that isn’t dry.
95 Years Ago -1930
Clifford Crocker, son of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Crocker, passed away.
A.J. Thompson left Monday for Walker, Minnesota, to take possession of his new summer resort.
The Boy Scouts have raised funds, to erect a cabin at Mill Creek.
90 Years Ago -1935
H.A. Willenburg, 54, well known Remsen auctioneer and businessman passed away, Thursday afternoon, October 3.
A very hapy reunion took place at the home of Mrs. J.W. Nield on Monday afternoon when seven sisters, daughters of the late Mr. & Mrs. Jungers, met together for the first time in 23 years.
The Marcus fire department was summoned to the Liz Stowater home last Friday to extinguish a blaze in the roof and considerable damage was done.
85 Years Ago -1940
Peters Brothers celebrated the 25th anniversary of their Ford dealership at an open house Saturday.
The Marcus Public School District is entirely out of debt, with the payment of the last $3,000 indebtedness incurred in 1932.
Dale Pitts, 39, Marcus farmer, died in a Cherokee hospital following a farm accident. He is survived by his wife and three children, Kenneth, Robert and Doris.
80 Years Ago – 1945
On Thursday, November 1, C.G. Lighter and son, Theron, will take possession of the Marcus News, now owned and operated by Victor Blessing.
Discharge from the armed service the past few days were Grant Bullock, Cletus Gravenish, Carl Rasmussen and Ralph Roethler.
75 Years Ago -1950
Pfc. Laverne Heesch, who has been fighting with the US Army in Korea was wounded in action September 21.
O.J. Strampe is making plans for a new home to be constructed on the lots in Southeast Marcus that he recently purchased from Mrs. Lillian Miller.
Ray Niemann, Marcus jeweler, has been named a member of the Board of Directors of th eIowa Jewelers Association.
The Marcus community was shocked Tuesday by the death of William Struve, 62, who died suddenly at his home in West Marcus.
Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Nagle have completed plans for a new home here and work will be started soon. Plans call for a ranch style home of Tennessee limestone.
70 Years Ago -1955
Mr. & Mrs. Roger Nelson are the parents of their child, a son, born Friday, September 30 in Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars. He weighted 7 pounds and five and a half ounces, and has been named Brian Edward.
Cpl. Peter Bird arrived home Saturday from Camp Pendleton, CA to spend a 15 day leave in the home of his father, Marion Bird.
Mrs. Bass Nelson entertained at a party Tuesday afternoon in honor of Mrs. Oscar Ekbald, who is moving soon to California.
Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Rowen entertained a group of neighborhood children at a party in their home Tuesday afternoon in honor of their twin daughters Kathi and Kristi, fourth birthday.
The Garden Club met Tuesday, October 4 in the home of Mrs. Herman Lage with Mrs. Vernon Grauer as assistant hostess.
An ad from Larry’s Lanes in the News this week advertised a kid’s special of 15 cents for one game of bowling.

Dr. G.R. Hobson is starting his 31st year in Marcus, coming here from Algona in 1930, to practice hid profession of Chiropractic.
Mrs. Norman Smith won the casserole and Jim Rae the crescent wrench given at the pow-wow day last Thursday at the Farmers Coop Elevator.
Mrs. George Beaton is a patient at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
60 Years Ago -1965
James Rae, 72, a resident of Marcus all of his life, passed away unexpectedly last Friday at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
Percy Goetschuis won one of the three $25 prizes offered last Friday evening. Other names called were Eleanor Beaton and Mark Carey.
Mr. & Mrs. Herman Fischer entertained at dinner Saturday evening at the Golden Pheasant at Remsen honoring their son, Gary, on his birthday.
55 Years Ago – 1980
Walter Geister, 78, died Saturday in LeMars. Services were Tuesday morning at Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus with Rev. John Hagreaves officiating.
Michael John, infant son of Mr. & Mrs. Don Alesch, was baptized in Holy Name Church Sunday with Bill Betz of Sioux City and Kim Alesch as sponsor.
Mrs. Betty Horstman and family were dinner guests Sunday evening in the Willie Goth home.
Mr. and Mrs. Leo Schnoes and family of Sioux City were dinner guests Sunday in the home of Mrs. Ed Schnoes, Sr.

The Marcus Eagles outscored the Remsen Union Rockets 42 to 6 last Friday night at Remsen.
Mr. & Mrs. Leo Unkrur of Cleghorn announce the birth of a 10 pound, two ounce boy, born Saturday, September 20. He has been named Daniel Michael.
The specials at Foodland: cream cheese, 15 cents; paper towels, jumbo roll 49 cents; Scott bath tissues, 2 rolls 39 cents; Grapes 49 cents a pound; Zesta saltines 39 cents a box.
