110 Years Ago – 1916
Joe Tschill had the misfortune to fall about ten feet to the ground while trimming a tree on the H.C. Loomis residence property last Thursday. He was found to have two ribs broken but is getting along nicely now.
Lula Tregoning and Pearl Sims who are attending college at Ames will return home this evening.
100 Years Ago – 1926
Bonita Walsh and Erva Dryden of Emmetsburg, instructors of the Castana School and Harry Ladman of Castana narrowly escaped death last Friday night when they were victims of an automobile accident two miles out of Castana. The young women were seriously injured but the young men emerged without injury.
Excitement ran high at the John Slagter farm last week when Siamese twins were born. They were however, of the animal kingdom, namely pigs. They lived but a short time and are now preserved in alcohol.
Mr. & Mrs. Henry Niemann returned home Saturday morning from their trip on a special train through the South.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Caroline Olson were held Wednesday in the home of her son-in-law and daughter. Mr. & Mrs. Ed Johnson, near Fielding.

Born to Mr. & Mrs. Harry Miller on April 3, a daughter, named Peggy Jean.
The Standard Oil Company has secured a team year lease for the lot and office building owned by the Marcus Lumber Company situated at the corner of Main and Railroad Streets.
Born to Mr. & Mrs. Glen Green, a son, named Wayne Gale, on March 6, 1931.

Frank Lee, proprietor of the Marcus Bakery, has recently installed the latest bread and cake mixing machines, representing an outlay of several hundred dollars.
Harvey Means, rural mail carrier at Meriden and a former Marcus resident, received a serious injury Sunday when he was kicked in the knee by a cow.
James Meehan, son of Mr. & Mrs. John Meehan was struck by lightning Saturday while working in the field for Robert Frank who lives west of town.
Mr. & Mrs. John Selting moved on the John Sand forty north of town Mr. Chels Metcalf moved into the house vacated by the Seltings.
85 Years Ago -1941
Tom Anderson was the winner of the contest held by their Typing II class of the public school last week, typing 67 words per minute with only eight-tenths of one percent errors. Lois Peters was his competitor in the finals typing 60 words per minute with six percent errors.
The secret marriage of Harold Bierney, athletic coach and member of the Marcus public school faculty, and Dorothy Peterson of Pierson has been announced.
Jake Dixson, son of Mr. & Mrs. Jacob Dixson, left Sioux City for Des Moines Wednesday, April 16, for final examination for the Navy.
Sylvia Lafferty, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. R.A. Lafferty of LeMars, became the bride of Dale Franck, son of Mr. & Mrs. Henry of Marcus, in a pretty ceremony in St. Joseph’s Catholic church Tuesday, April 15.
80 Years Ago – 1946
The Rev. R.W. Meyer has accepted a call to Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus. He comes here from Sioux City where he has been pastor of Concordia Lutheran church since November 1941.
Gov. Robert Blue spent Wednesday afternoon in Marcus where he spoke to the womens clubs and called on the business places in town. He was accompanied on his trip through Marcus by Fred Ritchie, state senator and Stanley Addy.
Marie Peck of Los Angeles, CA, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Claude Peck of Meriden, became the bride of Robert Sand, son of Mr. & Mrs. John Sand, Tuesday morning in Holy Name church.
The seniors of Marcus public school will present their clas play “Don’t Keep Him Waiting” May 3 in the school auditorium.
Rose Miller was honored on her birthday Thursday in the home of her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Aage Miller.
75 Years Ago -1951
Mrs. Sylvia Schlenger of Cleghorn died Sunday morning at Sacred Heart hospital after a long illness. She had been a resident of the Cleghorn community for the past 50 years.
The senior class of Holy Name school accompanied by Rev. E.L. McEvoy, observed their annual skip day Friday by attending the Ica Capers of 1961 and sightseeing in Sioux City.
Mrs. James Olson was complimented at a post-nuptial shower Sunday afternoon, April 8, in the parlors of Trinity Lutheran Church.
70 Years Ago -1956
Mrs. Peter Holm, one of the oldest residents of Marcus, passed away here April 24 after a two weeks illness. She was 97 years old and had lived in the Marcus Community 73 years.
The Marcus Masonic lodge was host to nearly 160 members and guests last Thursday evening, April 19, at the Masonic hall to honor Melvin Simons. He has been a member of the order for 50 years and the sixth member to receive this distinctive membership.
Mr. & Mrs. LaVerne Oswald of San Francisco, CA, are the parents of their first child, a daughter born Monday, April 16. She has been named Cyntha Ann.
Mr. & Mrs. Henry Busch of Marcus announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Elizabeth, to Herman Freking Jr, son of Mr. & Mrs. Herman Freking of LeMars.
Mrs. Ed Schnoes, Sr. has returned home from Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars and is convalescing nicely at her home.
A son was born to Mr. & Mrs. Francis Cronin of Meriden Saturday, April 21 at Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars.
Mr. & Mrs. Frank Menapace of New Mexico, announce the approaching marriage of their daughter Marilyn, to Leon Bentz, son of Mr. & Mrs. John Bentz of Marcus. The wedding will take place May 14.

The sale of Hatz Frozen Food Center in Marcus has announced the week, the new owner being Gaylord Smith, presently of Anaheim. CA.
Gust Benson, 76, a resident of Cherokee country for 50 years, died April 17.
Ann Brady, 20, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Joe Brady of Ling Beach, CA died Monday after a long illness.
Leo Wagner, 68, of Remsen died suddenly last Friday at his home there following a heart attack.
Mr. & Mrs. James Alesch are the parents of a son, Kevin Gerald, born April 20 at Sacred Heart in LeMars.

Funeral services for Espy Weimer, 82, of Marcus were held Monday afternoon. April 18 from the Nelson Funeral Home.
Sale of the Reinert Garage and Radiator Repair on Railroad Street in Marcus has been announced. The business was sold by Larry Reinert to Laurence Rassel, who has been employed there for something.
Mr. & Mrs. Harold Schlenger were supper guests Monday in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Lorne Schlenger.
55 Years Ago – 1971
Cliff Meylor, 66, a retired Sheldon auto dealer, died suddenly Friday evening at a Sheldon hospital following an apparent heart attack.
Terrie Rassel, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Rassel, and a junior of Marcus Public School, has been selected by the American Legion Auxiliary to attend the Iowa Girls State Session to be held June 7th through the 13th.
Mr.& Mrs. Bill Pedersen and Doug were dinner guests Sunday in the Richard Pedersen home in Sioux City.
