100 Years Ago – 1926
S.M. Wixcel, well known Marcus manufacturer, informed the News he will seek the nomination for the office of state representative in the June Primaries.
Catherine Woods, eighth grade pupil of Marcus public schools, proved her self champion speller of the country at the contest held at Cherokee last Saturday and won the honor of competing with nineth winner at Des Moines, April 16. She is the child of Mr. & Mrs. L.M. Woods.
Frank Lee of Gracevill, Minn, will take over complete charge of the Marcus Bakery owned by his father-in-law, A Rohner.
Mrs. Charles Quirin underwent an operation for an appendicitis in Sioux City last Saturday.
95 Years Ago -1931
The indoor golf course, operated for the past winter by Nagle Bros., has been reconstructed and will now feature cabaret dances and will be known as the Japanese Rose Garden.
Mr. & Mrs. C.V. Peters returned Friday from a three month’s trip on the east coast of Florida.
Baseball workouts started last week with quite a wealth of material available. The regular reporting are Relph Slagter, Elroy Baumann, Albert Anderson, Loren Willey and Dale Bork.
Mr. & Mrs. Ray Meuhl and family of Granville were weekend guests of Mr. & Mrs. Ray Walsh.
85 Years Ago -1941
The M Club of the public school held their annual initiation Wednesday. Six boys were initiated into the club: George Wheeler, Bill Bard, Ronald Hinspeter, Junior Franck, Bill Bass, Jr. and Don Loomis.
Miss Mary Ellen Kelly, a patient at a Sioux City hospital, attended the movie “Gone With The Wind” at the Capital theater Thursday. An ambulance from Perasso Brothers Funeral Home was to take Mary Ellen from the hospital to the movie and back again.
Last respects were paid to Anton Kaiser who died at his home Friday, March 28 at the age of 79 years. He suffered a stroke last Sunday night and failed to rally from it.
Mrs. Anna Heller observed her 94th birthday Tuesday afternoon. Thirty two friends gathered at her home to wish her happy birthday.
80 Years Ago – 1946
James Smith, Ronald Dorr, Paul Norris, Tommy Meylor, Frank Norris and Wayne Dorr received their honorable discharges and are now visiting in Marcus.
The elementary grades of the Marcus public school will present a musical program in the auditorium Friday.
Mr. & Mrs. J.J. Kinzel announce the marriage of their daughter, Vernace to Charles Miller son of Mr. & Mrs. Luther Miller of Marcus, on March 2 in the Roy Goodrich home in Cleghorn.
75 Years Ago -1951
Christ Lutheran Church in Remsen was the setting for a lovely wedding Sunday afternoon February 25, when Lorraine Gottsche and Larna Gottsche, daughters of MR. & Mrs. William Gottsche of Remsen, and Warren Weber, son of Clinton Weber of Marcus and James Olson of Marcus repeated their nuptial vows.
A large group of relatives gathered in the Chris Juhl home Sunday evening, March 4 and helped celebrate their 40 wedding anniversary.
Miss Flossie Seegar, a well known former resident of Marcus passed away at her apartment in Sioux City Sunday evening after a five month illness.
Gerald Scott, son of Mr. & Mrs. George Scott, is a patient at the Methodist hospital in Sioux City this week where he is suffering with a back injury.

Phillip Joseph Reynolds, a former resident of Marcus died suddenly at his home in Iowa City, Saturday, March 10.
Bud Bork has opened the service station adjacent to the East Side Tavern in Marcus and is handling Skelly and D-X products.
Mrs. Ella Radcliff, 82, passed away Monday and will be laid to rest in Marcus and Amherst cemetery this Thursday afternoon.
Mrs. John Apel announces the engagement of her daughter Rosealene, to Stanley Kessenichson of Mr. & Mrs. John Kessenich of Kingsley.
Thursday evening March 8 a number of relatives and friends pleasantly surprised Mr. & Mrs. Jim Juhl on their 45th wedding anniversary.
A six pound son was born Sunday, March 4 to Mr. & Mrs. Donald Schmillen. The new arrival has been named Robert Matthew and has two brothers and one sister.
Don Grauer has rented the 400 acres Norman Smith farm which has been tenanted by the Wayne Baldners.
A-1c Lyle Rae has concluded a week’s visit in the home of his mother, Mrs. Luelia Rae. Lyle has been transferred from Seattle, WA to Charlotte, NC.

S/Sgt and Leon Bentz and three children arrived in Guam last week. Sgt. Bentz is be stationed in Guam for 3 years.
Paul Beck, son of Mr. & Mrs. ClarenceBeck of Marcus, has accepted a position on the staff of the Los Angeles Times. He has been at Frankfort, Ky, for several years with the Associated Press.
Ronny Sadler, senior guard of the Grand Meadow basketball team, broke all the scoring records at his school this past season as well as being recognized as the highest scorer in the state of Iowa this year with an average of 35.6 points per game.
Sand Seed Service of Marcus will be host to an open house at their plant on the northeast edge of Marcus this Saturday, to give the people of the area a chance to inspect their plant and products.
Karen Hoyt, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Don Hoyt, and Judith Laws, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Lowell Laws, were among the 38 students nurses to receive their caps at capping ceremonies March 12 at St. Joseph Mercy hospital in Sioux City.

A.M. Larsen, manager of the Cherokee Area of Iowa Public Service Company, retired on April 1 after more than 43 years of service with the company.
Mrs. Raymond Harms of Kenneth, MN passed away early Wednesday morning at a Laverne, MN hospital following a short illness.
A disastrous explosion nearly cost of life of Clarence “Bud” Van Velzen Friday morning and did extensive damage to the basement and meat counter room of Bud’s Lockers in Marcus.
Herman Fischer will auction off his construction equipment Sunday, April 17. Herman recently bought the Marcus Gamble Store.
Mrs. Gene Tschill received word of the death of her brother, Victor Lamberty of Minneapolis, MN. Mr. Lamberty passed away Sunday morning following a heart attack.
55 Years Ago – 1971
Mrs. Louis Bouchey, 66, of Hemet, CA, passed away Saturday, March 27, at the Lorna Linda hospital following a stroke.
Mr. & Mrs. Charles Geringer are the parents of a 5 lb. 15 oz. Son born Thursday, March 18. He has been named Bradley Charles.
Mr. & Mrs. Terrance Lage of Madison, SD. were callers Sunday afternoon in the Mrs. Rose Lage and Melvin Lage home.
Mr. & Mrs. Bern Reimers of Boyden spent Friday visiting in the John Reimers home.
Mrs. Rolla Sellers, 87, passed away Sunday, April 4, at Sioux Valley hospital in Cherokee following a heart attack.
50 Years Ago -1976
Merle Cav , 77, passed away March 25, at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee after a long illness.
Bill Hols of Farmington recently caught a 7 pound 3 oz. Large mouth bass in a farm pond. It was 23 inches long. It took Hols 25 minutes to land it. He used a minnow of a four pound test.
Mr. & Mrs. Dean Drefke, Marine and Daniel, Mr. & Mrs. Tete Hogue and Mr. & Mrs. Fred Hoover were Saturday evening supper guests of Mr. & Mrs. George Koth.
Glenn Willis, 30 of Sibley died March 28 at a Sibley hospital after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Josephine Alesch of the Marcus Federated Garden Club will speak on “Dwarf Fruit Trees” on KCHE Radio on Friday, April 2.
45 Years Ago – 1981
Firty four person donated blood at the Marcus Municipal Building. The Siouxland Blood Bank, member of the American Association of Blood Banks, gratefully acknowledges the support of the community.
Avery Ames, 69, of Marcus died Tuesday, March 24 at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars after a lengthy illness. He was a retired farmer and had lived in the Marcus area all his life.
Lee Alesch is a patient at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Sioux City.
Ronnie Seggerman of Morningside spent Tuesday to Saturday spring break with his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Bob Seggerman.
Mr. & Mrs. Art Nielsen returned last Wednesday after spending six weeks in Florida with their daughter and husband, Jim and Joan Coleman of Indianapolis.
