110 Years Ago – 1916
The city election in Marcus Monday was exciting one and the larges number of votes ever cast at a regular election was polled that day. The votes resulted in the election of D.S. Twogood for Mayor.
At a meeting of the school board held last week, Dr. F. E. Loomis was elected to succeed himself as president of the board. All grade teachers will be paid $60.00 a month. The salary of Superintendent L.F. Smylie was increased $100 for the year.
Stella Yeimer, who is teaching in public schools at Estherville, came home last Saturday to spend a weeks vacation.
100 Years Ago – 1926
A telephone, a national institution is celebrating its fifieth anniversary. Born fifty years ago in old Boston, it is know the world over. Marcus, this week is celebrating its 37th anniversary of the installation of the telephone. In 1889 F.S. Barnes installed a private line connecting his bank and his residence. Later Dr. F.E. Loomis and A.G. Georges installed telephones of private nature connecting their offices with their home.
Matt Carey, 49, passed away at his residence here on March 23 following a brief illness of pneumonia and other complications.
95 Years Ago -1931
Delma Blietz, six year old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Blietz, was ill the past week with a peculiar affliction believed to have been cause by poisoning from house plants.
At a meeting held in the American Legion hall Monday evening, the possibilities of a baseball club to represent Marcus for the coming season, the members of last years club to again sponsor a team.
A date set for the high school glee club program is April 24th. This is put on by the boys and girls under the direction of Miss Held.
90 Years Ago -1936
Mrs. Katherine Rassel, a resident of Cherokee County for nearly 53 years, passed away in her home here March 21 after a lingering illness. She was 82 years old. Three sons, John, Joe and Frank, and one daughter, Teresa mourn her passing.
Miss Marguerite Bass and Maxine Calvert who are attending the National Business Training College at Sioux City, visited over the weekend in their home here.
Russel McConnell submitted to an appendicitis operation last Friday at the Methodist hospital in Sioux City.
Lawrence Cook, 19, was injured in a frightful manner late Tuesday at the Merle Cave farm, when the four horses he was driving became frightened and threw him from the disc. His leg was lacerated to the bone and broken in three places. The knee cap was so badly injured that it will no longer function and tendons in the foot were badly cut.
85 Years Ago -1941
A deal was completed late last week by which the Marcus News was sold to David Griffith of Elkader, Iowa who will take immediate possession. The News has been published by Mrs. Hush since February1.
Ralph Scott, former manager of the Farmers Elevator here, will return to Marcus in the same capacity of June 1.
Mrs. John Sand left Monday by train for California where she will spend the next few weeks visiting with friends and relatives including her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. E. Kraus at Santa Barbara, and her Mother-in-law, Mrs. Frank Sand.
A large crowd of mourning relatives and friends filled the Methodist Church Tuesday afternoon to pay last respects to Mrs Charles Woodall who passed away in her home on Saturday, March 22 after an illness of two weeks. Mrs. Woodall, Mother of Mrs. Walter Farlow, was 68 years of age.
80 Years Ago – 1946
Early Thursday morning the electric light post near the Ekblad cream station was knocked over by a Pilley cream truck, breathing the bulb and post in several places.
Funeral services for Bernard Bohlke, 68, Remsen banker were held Monday morning at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen.
Mr. & Mrs. Floyd Graham of Worthington, Minnesota, were callers in the Charles Addy home on Monday evening. Mr. Graham was formerly manager of the Farmers Elevator here.
Mr. & Mrs. W.P. Schmillen and Margaret were Sunday evening guests in the Emil Anderson home.
Junior Slagter, son of Mrs. Augusta Slagter, recently received his discharge from the Navy separation center at Minneapolis after thirty one months of service.
75 Years Ago -1951
Duane Oswald, 18, son of Mr. & Mrs Leo Oswald of Marcus, met instant death shortly after 3 o’clock Sunday afternoon, when his car was struck by a westbound Illinois Central passenger train. The fatal accident occurred at the crossing a mile east of Marcus and half mile north of the Maurice Keffeler farm where Mr. Oswald was employed.
Miss Halcyon Heline, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Oscar Heline, arrived in Marcus Monday from Paris, France, where she had been employed the past year by the Economic Cooperation Administration.
Thomas Meylor arrived home Monday from Ames to spend his Easter vacation with his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Ed Meylor.
Superintendent Donald Wetter and Harry Nelson were at Lincoln over the weekend where they participated in the training of the Naval Reserve Air Unit of which they are members.
Mrs Thedore Henrich and her six year old son, Jay, of near Remsen, collision last week on Highway 3 west of Remsen. The accident occurred late Thursday afternoon in a head on collision.
70 Years Ago -1956
Marcus will soon have a new shoe repair and shoe retail store, a welcome addition to Marcus Street. William Sievers of Remsen will call his business “Bill’s Shoe Shop”, and in addition to shoe repairing he will handle a line of shoes repairing he will handle a line of shoes for men, women and children. Marcus has been without a shoe shop for about 3 years.
Mr. & Mrs. Percy Meansand Karen and Pat and Bobby Seggerman attended the Shrine Circus at the at the auditorium in Sioux City Sunday afternoon.
Mrs. George Kirchner of Marcus was a guest at Tuesday noon’s meeting of the Rotary Club and talked to the Rotarians about the trip she, in company with a granddaughter, made to Hawaii last summer.
Dick and Paul Hatz of Remsen have purchased the Straub lockers in Marcus and will take possession next Monday morning.
65 Years Ago -1961
Plans are going forward to erect a $5,000 monument in a farm field near Tell City, Ind. In memory of the 63 persons who lost their lives when a Northwest Airline Electra plane crash there last March. Mrs. W.L. Gund of Marcus as one of 63 people who remains were buried in a common grave at the sight of the crash.
Ginger Ann Treptow, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Francis Treptow of Cleghorn, will leave April 4 for a tour of Europe. Miss Treptow won the trip as a prize by the Frontier Airlines, by who she is emplyed. She will be gone three weeks and see much of Europe.
Wallace Healy, 58, a well known Marcus farmer, died suddenly at his home southwest of Marcus Wednesday morning. He had had been in ill health for some time, but his condition did not appear to be critical until shortly before his death.
Mr. & Mrs. Edgar Roseen and family visited Sunday afternoon in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Claire Green in Cherokee.
Mr. & Mrs. Jack Clarkson and Tamara are visiting in the home of their parents, Mr. & Mrs Carl Letsche and Mr. & Mrs. John Clarkson.
60 Years Ago -1966
Norman Sawin has resigned as Superintendent of the Marcus Community school effective at the end of the present school year.
Mrs. Eula (Neir) Mullen, 68, passed away March 15, in a hospital at Cedar Falls.
A large crowd of members and friends attended the ground breaking ceremony for the new Grace Methodist Church in Marcus that was held Sunday, March 27.
Claude Gross and Bernard McCoy Oliver farm equipment dealers in Marcus, were recently designed as members of the 1965 President’s Honor Council of the Oliver Corporation.
Mrs. Annie Edgar has received word of the death of her sister, Mrs. John Craigan, of Craig Mount Ballygowen Comber, Ireland. Mrs. Craig passed away Sunday morning.
55 Years Ago – 1971
Thieves apparently were interrupted some time Tuesday night at the Farmers Cooperative Elevator, while attempting to break into a storage building. They were undoubtedly intent on stealing farm chemicals.
The Rescue Unit was called to the Kenny Cronin farm northwest of Marcus Wednesday noon, when their 18 month old son, Kent, was found face down in a water filled ditch. However, the family had revived him by the unit’s arrival. He was given oxygen and taken to FVH at LeMars for a check up.
Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Brady and sons and Mr. & Mrs. Bob Seggerman were visitors Friday evening in the Leo Brady home.
50 Years Ago -1976
Howard Peavey, manager of Community Coop Oil Co. announces the opening of the new “Coop Appliance and Repair” here in Marcus. The store is located in the former International building on the north end of Main Street.
Agnes Weber, 79 received lacerations and head injuries Saturday morning when she was hit by the mirror of a passing straight truck as she crossed the intersection.
The Farmers Cooperative Co. of Remsen recently honored Adela Huewe for 50 years of service as bookkeeper of the company. She was presented with a plaque and a cash gift.
Mr. & Mrs. Leo Alesch have returned from a ten day vacation in Hawaii. Enroute home they visited Dennis Blasberg and son in Des Moines and Corrinne Alesch in Cedarr Rapids.
Mr. & Mrs. Ervin Mayer were Sunday dinner guests in the Carl Mayer home.
45 Years Ago – 1981
Mrs. Gus Stark, the former Opal Williams, 61, died Saturday, March 14 in Valley Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona.
“Home” the past year of Jia Yu Tian of Tieling, China, has been the Clarence Anderson farm south of Cleghorn where he has been “one of the family” while learning all about the different methods of American agriculture. Now his year is almost up and he is looking forward to returning to his home and family.
In the short length of time the Marcus Fire Department has been raising money for a Jaws-of-Life tool, they are happy to say the goal has been reached and surpassed.
Blanche Birkett, of West Liberty, owns hundreds of buttons, but they’re not for sale or for sewing on zipperless clothing. Blanche’s buttons are strictly for show. Blanche, 85, started collecting her buttons back in the 1930’s when button collecting was a vogue. Her rarest buttons are made of jet and porcelain.
Sunday supper and evening callers of Mr. & Mrs. Roger Leavitt included Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Ruby, Cindy and Danny of Spirit Lake.
