110 Years Ago – 1916
The old Catholic church building which J.F. Collins purchased has been remodeled into an opera house and a hard maple floor put in for dancing. New opera chairs have arrived and the building will seat 400.
The Edmonds-Londergan Company bank building and ready for occupancy the first of March. The vacuum steam heat plant installed by Ed Keleher is working very satisfactory and the plastering is completed.
In a letter to the Marcus News, Mr. 7 Mrs. Perry Miller, who have been spending the winter in Los Angeles, wrote that they are enjoying the fine weather and have seen many
Marcus people who are wintering there.
100 Years Ago – 1926
Louis Grauer proved to be the successful bidder at the auction sale Monday evening when he paid $250 for the auxiliary school house situated north of the public school.
Louis Seegar is announcing that his son, Bernard, is a junior member of the old established business which was operating when Marcus was a mere village.
95 Years Ago -1931
Sixty young friends from Marcus, Paullina, Cleghorn and Cherokee charivaried Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Swanson at the Swanson home north of Marcus Friday evening.
Michaelson’s Grocery is advertising coffee at 25 cents a pound this week and Barons Dept. Store has sugar at 1.47 for a 25 pound sack.
Mr. & Mrs. Robert Meylor are moving this week from Ruthven to a farm north of Marcus.
Re. Wittkopp, pastor of Peace Lutheran Church at Ulmer has been called by the Lutheran Church in Marcus and will move here in the near future.
Marcus Oil Co. was the successful bidder to supply gasoline to Cherokee County in 1931 for the west half of the county.
90 Years Ago -1936
Glen Countryman, who has operated a barbershop in Marcus for several years, sold his interests last week and has located in Minneapolis.
A deal was completed last week whereby Melvin and Harold Dorr became the owners of the hatchery equipment and business operated by James Rae for many years.
The funeral of William Walsh, who passed away last Thursday evening at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars after a six weeks illness of pneumonia, was held Monday at Holy Name Catholic Church.
Local coal dealers have received assurance of an adequate supply of coal to meet local demands. Last week there was an apparent shortage and sales were apportioned in 500 pound lots for a short time.

Mr. John Holmes and Mr. Tony Kaiser are both medical patients are the Methodist Hospital in Sioux City.
Jim Galigan was very seriously injured last Saturday afternoon while operating a portable power saw at the Wood Shop. His glove got caught in the blade and the thumb of his left hand was severed.
Mrs. Elmer Ricker and Mrs. Bert Addy returned Friday from Des Moines, where they had been attending the State Farm Bureau Convention.
John Snyder has a new Ford Deluxe Tudor delived by Peters Brothers. They also delived a Ford truck to Harry Ogren Saturday.
A group of friends brought their dinner to Mrs. Geroge Grauer’s home Tuesday to show their thanks to her for helping them make soap.
80 Years Ago – 1946
Oscar Heline, Marcus farmer, was last Friday given a leadership award by the Des Moines Register Company.
Gene Tschill has announced the formal opening of his new Victory Billard Parlor on Saturday, February 2, located under Fred’s Place on the corner.
The Silver Star was awarded posthumously to First Lieutenant John Kemp for gallantry in action while serving with a field artillery unit in Germany last March.
Mrs. Bessie Addy was the guest of honor at her home in Marcus Monday at a dinner in observance of her 83rd birthday.
Mr. & Mrs. Roy Bork were guests in the Chris Miller home Thursday evening, helping them celebrate their wedding anniversary.
Bob Ames hass announced the lease of the Broblek Service station in east Marcus and has taken over the business

Joan Wilberding of Marcus was among the 18 students who received their caps at the capping ceremony at St. Vincent’s Nursing School in Sioux City Friday, evening, January 25.
The big crowd at the diocesan tournament at Holy Name School was shocked Tuesday evening by the announcement of the death of Rt. Msgr. Magnis A. Schemel, pastor of St. Mary’s Church at Remsen.
Mr. & Mrs. Robert Hagey are the parents of a son born Friday, January 19 at Sacred Heart Hospital. He has been named Grant Carl.
Allen Grauer was one of 39 Iowa Teacher’s College Air ROTC cadets to be initated into the newly formed Arnold Air Sac at the College.

The Marcus fire department was called to the Jack Galigan farm a mile north of Marcus last Friday afternoon, where a range had ignited the walls and floor of the kitchen
Art Long has leased the Collins building recently vacated by Steck’s Grocery on Main Street, and is busy installing fixtures for a new meat market.
Mr. & Mrs. Merle Sand returned home Tuesday from a four weeks vacation trip, during which they visited nearly all the southern states from Florida to Arizona.
Sandra Johnson, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Clinton Johnson, won first place in the Legion sponsored oratorical contest held last Tuesday evening.
Charles McManus has purchased the Victory Billards in Marcus, taking possession Monday morning.

Weldon Ohlendorf Jr., son of Mr. & Mrs. Weldon Ohlendorf of Marcus, is in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Sioux City following a freak hunting accident last Sunday afternoon.
McKernan’s Market won the city last week with 2903 pins and a handicap of 463.
Ann Braun, Holy Name High School won the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award as evidence of superior scientific aptitude.
Dan Schlenger placed first in the under 12 group of divers at an AAU swimming meet in Siuox City January 25.
Mrs. Herman Hueser was the winner of the brushed nylon gown given at Natle’s Apparel Saturday evening.
60 Years Ago -1966
Twelve girls basketball players plus their student managers have been chosen to attend the Girl’s State Basketball Tournament at Des Moines March 11 & 12.
Rosemary Whealon, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. James Whealon, was among some 90 nursing students receiving the official cap of a student nurse at Creighton Memorial, St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in Omaha.
Mark Cline, Tom Berlund, Bob Garvin, and Gloria Ladenthin, of the Marcus Community School, have been selected to play in the 280 pieces All Northwest Iowa Band.
Mr. & Mrs. Leonard Juhl of Marcus are the parents of a seven pound, seven ounce son, born Friday, January 28 at Sacred Heart Hospital. He has been named John Andrew and has three brothers.
Dr. G.A. Wiedemeier will undergo surgery this Thursday morning at St. Vincent’s hospital.

Mrs. Eddie Ohlendorf has received her diploma from the Academy of Millinery Design of Little Falls, New Jersey.
Mrs. Carl Heesch returned home Tuesday from Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars where she had been a patient the past two weeks.
Mr. & Mrs. Phillip Ladenthin are parents of their first child, Krista Lynn, born Wednesday, January 27. Gardenparents include Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Irwin of Washta and Mr. & Mrs. Harold Ladenthin of Marcus.
Mr. & Mrs. Roy Nelson attend the Farmers Grain Dealers meeting in Des Moines Monday and Tuesday of last week.
Warner Weber returned home Tuesday after being hospitalized the past eight weeks in St. Joe’s Sioux City. After a fall from a telephone pole he broke tow heels, his left leg, and dislocated and fractured his schoulder.

Marie Pallesen, who has been a patient at St. Joseph’s Hospital for the past three weeks, was dismissed Tuesday.
Bruce Mayer, son of Mr. & Mrs. Carl Mayer, has been named to the dean’s list in the College of Science and Humanities at Iowa State University, Ames
Becky Johnson, junior, has been selected as this years contestant in the National Council of Teachers of English Achievement Awards in writing contest.
Mr. & Mrs. Willis Irwin entertained at dinner at Langes on Thursday evening for their wedding anniversary.
Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Ament were Sunday afternoon callers in the home of Mr. & Mrs. William Ament.
45 Years Ago – 1981
Randy Hueser, 20, son of Mr. & Mrs. Tom Hueser, was killed when the car he was driving struck a bridge abutment on Highway 3 about midway between Marcus and Remsen.
Doug Lauters returned home Monday from Sioux Valley Hospital where he had been a patient since last Wednesday.
The Club Scout Pinewood Derby winners were first, Tim Roethler, second Allan Ruden, third Jeff Fischer, and best design, Teddy Recker.
Mr. & Mrs. Ed Schlenger are proud parents of an eight pound baby girl, Sarah Jane, born January 18 at Floyd Valley Hospital.
Tom Wiese, son of Dr. and Mrs. Wiese of Marcus will play saxophone for the jazz bands presentation of Jazz Unlimited at the University of South Dakota.
