William Gowan, 40 died at his home in Amherst Township Wednesday evening after a three month illness.
Joe Lutz of Remsen a favorite baseball pitcher and will know by Marcus fans, has signed up with St. Louis for the next season at a salary of $1,500 and expenses.
105 Years Ago – 1920
Four deer were seen Saturday near Remsen. Early in the morning the animals were seen alongthe creek at the Williams Collins farm four miles east of town

100 Years Ago – 1925
Dorothy, small daughter of Mr. & Mrs. C.W. Brower, is the proud possessor of an early Christmas present in the form of a beautiful doll that talks, walks and recites.
Marcus subscribers to the Des Moines Register were deprived of a part of their paper last Sunday due to a fire which destroyed a urban car on the Fort Dodge, Des Moines and Southern line which was carrying 15,000 copies of the Register.
At a meeting Thursday of the directors of the Western Cherokee County Insurance Association, John Foley, prominent farmer, was elected to succeed J. W. Nield as secretary.
95 Years Ago -1930
Wendell Anderson won first in the oratorical division. Ruby Martin in the dramatic division and Forrest Drefke in the humorous division, at the declamatory contest held last Friday evening.
Miss Irene Nagle and Harry Baumgardner were united in marriage Monday in Sioux City.
A Johnson, 20, son of Mr. & Mrs. Aruthur Johnson, has enrolled in the Lincoln Airplane and Flying School at Lincoln.
Michaelson’s Grocery is advertising coffee at 29 cents and bananas at 8 cents a pound this week.
85 Years Ago -1940
Helen Niemann and Ruth Nitzschke tied for the highest score for this week in the women’s league, bowling 181.
The six thousand dollar improvement at the Methodist Church is almost complete
Frank Hines, father of Mrs. W.E. Witter, died last Monday at Newell where he was struck by a car.
Helen Niemann and Dr. R.E. Dubois won a dollar each as prizes for the highest game rolled on the Recreation Alleys outside of league bowling in November. Dr. Dubis’s game was 254 and Miss Niemann’s was 213.
80 Years Ago – 1945
Johnny Comes Marching Home on Christmas Eve” a program of holiday music will be presented by the vocal groups of the high school on Thursday, December 20, in the school auditorium
The members of Holy Name church contributed $300 for the UNRRA. This generous response is in addition to another appeal earlier in the spring.
Mr. & MR.s Clarence Woodall announce the marriage of their daughter, Joyce, and Charles F. Hoover, B.B. 2/c. The wedding took place in Los Angeles November 30.

Pat Brady, who farm 3 miles north and a half mile east of Marcus, will hold a closing out public auction Thursday, December 15.
Holy Name church in Marcus was the settling for a party wedding Saturday morning. December 2, at nine o’clock when Joanne Barlow, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Carl Barlow, was united in marriage to Paul Mathew Brady, son of Mr. & Mrs. James Brady.
Oscar Heline of Marcus has been re-elected to the Omaha Farm Credit Administration board of directors.
Mr. & Mrs. W.E. Witter announce the marriage of their daughter Ruth, and Lawrence Webb of Sioux City on Sunday afternoon, December 3 at three o’clock. The marriage was performed by the Rev. George Dunn.
Marjorie Krekow, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Ted Krekow, has accepted a position in the Cherokee school system an dwill assume her duties January 15.

Mr. & Mrs. Stanley Birch were honored on their 20th wedding anniversary when a group of relatives were present in their home to enjoy a potluck supper.
Mr. & Mrs. Joe Kramer were Sunday dinner guests in the Charles Addy home.
Dr. and Mrs. Doyle Simonsen entertained Thanksgiving Day in observance of Hans Rasmussen’s birthday.
The sixth grade class of Marcus Public School and their guests enjoyed a skating party at the Tomahawk Roller Rink in Cherokee Tuesday evening.
A group of friends and neighbors gathered in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Harold Jenks to honor them at a farewell party.
A post nuptial miscellaneous shower was held November 22 in Holy Name hall honoring Mrs. Wayne Rassel a recent bride.
Mrs. Johann Miller entertained at a party Saturday in honor of her son, Danny, on his fifth birthday.
Mr. & Mrs. Vernon Ebert announce the arrival of a daughter born Thursday, December 1, at Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars. She weighed 9 lbs 11 and a half ozs. And has a brother Gale.

Pastor and Mrs. Paul Bergmann have left the Trinity Lutheran parish of rural Marcus to take up residence in Tucumari, New Mexico.
Mr. & Mrs. Pete Lauters announce the arrival of a son Richard Allen, born Thursday, November 17 at Sacred Heart hospital.
Miss Julia Rose North of Sioux City, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Verden North of Storm Lake, and Wilmer Dale Ogren, son of Mr. & Mrs. Harry Ogren of Marcus, were married November 18 at First Baptist church at Storm Lake.
Herman Treinen, 83, retired farmer and longtime resident of this community died Monday after a long illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Stanley Birch of Cleghorn, observe their 25th wedding anniversary with open house held in their home on the afternoon and evening of November 27th.
Mr. & Mrs. Charles Nielsen and family and Chris Nielsen were Thanksgiving dinner guests in the home of Mrs. Bessie Addy.
Handicraft Club will meet Tuesday evening December 6, in the home of Mrs. Harold Hippe.
Mrs. M.J. Kelly was admitted to St. Joseph’s Hospital for a check up.

Miss Mollie Fenton of Marcus will observe her 92nd birthday Sunday, December 5. Anyone wishing to remember Miss Fenton on that day may send cards to her at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Dr. and Mrs. George Malouf and their daughter, Jo Ann, arrive in Marcus late Wednesday evening where the family will make its home and Dr. Malouf will practice medicine.
Delbert Joslin returned home Monday from Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee, where he had been a patient for a week.
One of the three $25 Marcus money prizes offered last Friday evening went to Mrs. Mabel Barnes. Other names called were Mrs. Eldon Strasser and Mrs. Leo Alesch.

Gerald Barry, son of Mr. & Mrs. John Barry of Marcus, was commissioned a Second Lieutenant, Transportation Corps, IS Army Reserve on November 21.
Kim Moats, 5 year old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Dwight Moats, became suddenly ill Saturday night and was taken to Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee Sunday morning.
Mrs. Minnie McClintock’s name was drawn by Kevin Hueser as the winner of the blanket at Nagle’s Apparel Saturday evening.
Jo Ann Busch, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Busch, Sr. has accepted a position at the home office of Mutual of Omaha and United of Omaha.

Dennis Garvin, son of Mr. & Mrs. Merlin Garvin of Marcus, is one of the 15 Mount Marty College, students that have been named to Who’s Who.
Mrs. John Pedersen was admitted to Sioux Valley Hospital Friday, Mark Bancroft was admitted to Floyd Valley Hospital early last week.
Bruce Rainboth had the misfortune of breaking a bone in his foot while playing basketball in Marcus Sunday night.
Mr. & Mrs. Richard Miller entertained at a birthday part for their daughter, Molly on her first birthday.
45 Years Ago – 1980
Mrs. Ed Driesen is a patient at the hospital in Oakland, Iowa; Maurice Ricker is home after spending six weeks in tow hospitals in Sioux City.
Mr. & Mrs. Leo Alesch will observe their 40th wedding anniversary with an open house on Sunday, November 30 at Holy Name Hall in Marcus.
John Deichman, son of Mr. & Mrs. Irv Deichman, and Barbara Hohbach, are members of the Buena Vista College Choir, which will present its annual Christmas concert on Sunday, December 7.
Mr. & Mrs. Bill Ament observed their 61st wedding anniversary on Sunday with Mr. & Mrs. Henry Volz hosting a dinner at the Normandy in Sioux City.
