105 Years Ago – 1920
At eight Tuesday morning, August at Holy Name church the marriage of Miss Winifred Toomey and Leonard Olson was solemnized with the Rev Cooke officiating.
The members of the local post of the American Legion post held their 1st business meeting Tuesday evening. Dr. M.F. Joynt was elected commander.
Fred Quirin, highly esteemed citizen of Marcus died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A.R. Pettyman.
100 Years Ago – 1925
A very pretty wedding took place at the Trinity Lutheran church Sunday morning when Miss Clara Kirchoff, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Fred Kirchoff of Cherokee, became the bride of Andrew Cook of Madison, SD.
Marcus can now boast of the only Lincoln car in Cherokee county. Peters Brothers delivered a new four passenger Lincoln coupe to W.L. Gund this week.
90 Years Ago -1935
Nagle Brothers are building an up to date miniature golf course on the lot north of Wixcel’s residence.
A fire in Jim Dalton’s barley field was extinguished after it had destroyed an acre and a half of grain Tuesday morning.
A fire of undetermined origin did damages estimated at several hundred dollars at the George Rabel home southwest of Marcus Sunday while the Rabel family was away from home.
A deal was made this week whereby J.P. Ament purchased half interest in the Garland Garage formerly owned and operated by H.F. Treinen and J.P. Ament.
Clarence Beck, manager of the J.P. Beck Company in Marcus until recently, has purchased the Bunkies Grocery, formerly owned by W.A. Kramer.

Miss Ruth Osborn, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. G.A. Osborn, became the bride of Lowell Nelson, son of Mr. & Mrs. Olaf N. of Albert City at a beautiful wedding on August 4.
Forty years of business in Marcus will be closed for Mr. & Mrs. Bic Sjostrom when the details of the transfer to Victor Straub are taken care of.
Miss MargaretZembesch, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Zembsch, and Harold Bobolz, were united in marriage Wednesday morning, August 7 at Holy Name Church.
80 Years Ago – 1945
Announcement has been made of the marriage of Lillian Foley, to W.J. Gravenish, son of Mrs. Paulline Gravenish of Cherokee.
Saturday evening Mr. and Mrs. Frank McClintock departed for Poris Island, SC after receiving a telegram that day that their son, Pvt. James McClintock USM, was in very serious condition.
Pfc., Eldred McIntire has arrived in the state from Burma and is spending a furlough. His father, Claire McIntire, lives in Marcus.
Word has been received here that Pfc. Wilfred Gill, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earle Gill and Paul Galigan, met recently at an airport in Paris, France.
75 Years Ago -1950
The work of constructing he new oil station on the lot south of the Nielsen Electric Shop is beginning to progress. Albert Nielsen is building the station and it will be leased and operated by the Phillip Petroleum company.
A Kelly automatic press has been installed in the Marcus office. It is a product of the American Type Foundry and is a small, automatically fed press. It will handle sheet up to 17×22 inches in size and speeds up to 4,000 per hour.
Mr. & Mrs. Garland Geister are the parents of a boy born July 31, He weighed 8 lbs , 14 ozs, and has one brother, Grant.

Miss Mary Oswald, student nurse at eh Mercy college of Nursing Iowa City, has been chosen to be the nurse companion for a Wisconsin arthritis patient on the forthcoming Invalids Pilgrimage, co sponsored by the Confraternity of Pilgrims, Chicago, and the League of Shut In Sodalists.
A farewell party sponsored by WSCS of Grace Methodist church for Mr. & Mrs. Ralph McConnel will be held in the church basement Friday evening, August 18 at eight o’clock.
A pretty wedding was solemnized at a Nuptial High Mass in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Remsen, Tuesday morning August 9 with Patricia Jane Krohn, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Edmund Ruden of Remsen, became the bride of Phillip Brady, son of Mr. & Mrs. John Brady.
Mr. & Mrs. John Bentz announce the approaching marriage of their daughter, Jacqueline, to Richard Bird, son of Mrs. Clara Bird, on August 30 at Holy Name Church.
Mr. & Mrs. Marvin Snow of Mr. Ayr, Indiana announces the arival of their first child, a son, born Sunday, August 7 at Jasper City Hospital in Pensselaer, Indiana. Grandparents are Mr. & Mrs. Henry Alesch. Mrs. Snow is the former Jean Alesch.
The East Side Birthday Club honored Mrs. Alvina Schmillen on her birthday last Thursday.

“Buttons” 900 lbs junior herford fed by Rodney Ogren, Marcus, was named grand champion at the Marcus Fair Tuesday, repeating a similar victory at the county 4H show at Cherokee.
David Spears, son of Mr. & Mrs. Paul Spears, has been promoted to cadet captain at Kentucky Military Institute at Louisville.
Miss Pyllis Hanno, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Hanno of Remsen, became the bride of Francis Wendt, son of Mr. & Mrs. Leo Wendt, August 13 at St. Mary’s Catholic church in Remsen.
Miss Joy Jeannine Johnson, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Verner Johnson, exchanged wedding vows with Albert Marvin Vogel, son of Mr. & Mrs. Andrew Vogel of Orange City August 15 at the Calvary Evangelical United Brethren Church in LeMars.
The Marcus fire Department was called to the Klingborg Lumber yard about 7:00 Thursday morning for a fire smoldering under the floor of the wood shop.
Forrest Booth lost the tips of the forefinger and middle finger of his left hand.

Mrs. Frank Peppersack was the sweepstakes winner in the canning department of the fair. She won 36 blue ribbons and best in the class in vegetable division with whole beets.
Paul Arndt has accepted a position at the Farmers State Bank. He comes here from Kansas City.
Funeral services were held at the Visitation Catholic Church in Maryhill for Michael Tracey, 54 who died Sunday morning at the home of a sister and family in Sheriden Township.
The Water Show will be held this Saturday evening, August 21 at the Marcus Pool.

Michael Bolton arrived home August 1 with his discharge, after spending four years in the United States Navy.
Mr. & Mrs. Clinton Bunt of Marcus will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary with an open house on Sunday, August 16 at the Municipal building in Marcus.
Grace United Methodist Church was setting August 1 for the evening candlelight service uniting Van Jay Marquis and Lt. Charles Bris-Bois, Jr.

Former Marcus resident, Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Miller, will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary Sunday, August 17 with an open house at there home in Kingsley.
The Marcus Jaycees are hosting a two ball steak fry at the Marcus Golf Club August 22.
The Montgomery Wards Catalog Store in Marcus will hold their grand opening on Thursday, August 14.
There will be a baseball potluck supper for all midgets, high school players and their families in the park on Sunday, August 17.

Jim Hoefling, a well known farmer around the Marcus area, is running for a spot on the Marcus school board.
Mr. & Mrs. Daniel Peck of Remsen will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary, Sunday, August 24 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at the VFW Club in Remsen.
Debra Rassel, daughter of Jamie and Margaret Heeren of Marcus, graduated from the Practical Nursing program at Western Iowa Tech Community College on August 1.
The Marcus Garden Club held its regular meeting on August 5 Roll call was “My Exhibit at the Fair.”
