105 Years Ago – 1920
The new implement building which was constructed the season by O.W. Ekbald is one of the finest improvements made in Marcus this year.
John Dorr has received word that the remains of his son, Carl Dorr who died in France of influenza, will be shipped to Marcus soon after arrival in New York, July 23.
Thirty-eight ex-servicemen of the Marcus community signed a charter for an organization of an American Legion Post.
Flaherty, Bancroft and Mason have named their new mat shop, “The Star Market” The building is constructed of brick and tile.
100 Years Ago – 1925
Miss Elizabeth Nielsen, daughter of Mrs. Anna Nielsen and John Brating of Thief River, Minn. Were quietly married at the Methodist parsonage in Cherokee Saturday afternoon July 25.
Relatives have received word here of the marriage of Rae Mairose of Charles City and formerly of Marcus, to Mona Kies of Worthington, Minn.
Mrs. L.C. Albaugh announced the opening of the new Home Beauty Shoppe at her residence on Locust street.
Mrs. Radcliffe returned home Saturday from a months vacation which included her attending the state convention of the American Legion Auxiliary held at Debuque.
95 Years Ago -1930
Following a long period of illness, Mrs. Harriet Pimperton passed away at her home Wednesday, July 23, at the age of 78.
Mr. &Mrs. John Kelly are the parents of a boy born Sunday evening at Sacred Heart hospital.
Riverside Park in Cherokee was the scene of the Beck stores picnic on Thursday. About 40 employees of the Marcus, Granville and Remsen stores enjoyed the annual affair.
90 Years Ago -1935
The Kruse Market operated by W.O. Kruse, opened today in the new location. The Market which has been located in the J.P. Beck Company Store, is now located in the J.P. Beck Company store, is now located in the building occupied until recently by the White Front Cafe.
Threshing has been underway in this territory since Saturday. The temperature has been ranging from 100 to 105 degrees until Tuesday when the rain brought relief.
Something quite new entertainment is in store for the Better Marcus Club and friends Friday at the Marcus Playground when the organization brings Claude Smith, master interpreter of Plays to present one of his popular impersonations, “Davey Crockett.”
85 Years Ago -1940
Frank Burch was the only Marcus golfer to win honors in his flight in the golf tournament at the Paullina Golf Course.
Thomas Birch, son of Mrs. Anna Birch, is listed among those who will receive degrees from the State University of Iowa Friday evening, Mr. Birch has been in the law school.
Mrs. G.A. Georges received word last week that her brother, Joseph Brill of Madesta, CA passed away at the home of relatives in Keil, Wisc., after a heart attack.
Elmer Singer of LeMars has purchased the Standard Oil Station on Hwy No. 3 south of Marcus. Francis Wilberding is now running the station.
80 Years Ago – 1945
Mr. & Mrs. Amos Weber and family heard their son and brother, 2nd Lt. Joseph Weber, in a radio broadcast from a B-29 base on Guam. He was one of the fliers who was interviewed by Jack Shelley, news commentator for re-broadcasting in Iowa.
An aerial tour of inspection of Europe’s key bombing target was a prize won by Pfc. Vernon Hueser of Quimby, whose letter on war savings, a winner in his stations contest, has been entered in the ETO wide competition sponsored by the soldier’s newspaper “Starts and Stripes.”
Mr. & Mrs. Glen Metcalf of Sioux City are the parents of a 7 ½ pound son, James Michael born Thursday at St. Joseph’s hospital in Sioux City.
75 Years Ago -1950
Mrs. Joseph Kass and her 6 month old son, Alan, lost their lives in a two car collision at the Merle Cave corner Sunday afternoon.
A beautiful wedding took place when Bonnie Garlow of Glendale, CA, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Walter Garlow, became the bride of Milton Morgenthaler, son of Mrs. J.C. Schwartzkopt of Pinkeyville, IL, in the historical replica of Wee Kirk of the Heather at Forest Lawn Park in Glendale.
Jerry Peters, son of Mr. & Mrs. Jay Peters of Meriden, left Monday evening for Seattle, where he will sail for Tokyo, as a civilian employee of the US Government.
70 Years Ago -1955
The Marcus community was saddened Saturday by the death of Duane Schlenger, the 12 year old son of Mr. & Mrs. Clifford Schlenger.
A new ranch style home is being built on the Adam Hohbach farm eight miles south of Marcus.
A 6 lb son was born to Mr. & Mrs. Donald Johnson Friday, August 5 at Sacred Heart hospital. He has been named Jeffery Allen.
Mrs. Ronald Mortensen, a recent bride was honored at a post-nuptial shower Sunday afternoon at the Municipal building.
Miss Evelyn Mathers became the bride of John Woodall at the Kingsley Methodist Church.
Max Drefke, local high school athlete, participated in a Junior Legion, all-star baseball game August 4, at Soo’s Park in Sioux City.
65 Years Ago -1960
Mr. & Mrs. Jack Clarkson are the parents of a six pound daughter, born August 9.
LaVerne Birch and Nancy Goodrich escaped serious injury Monday evening, August 1, when the pick-up truck they were riding in caught fire and burned a quarter of a mile west of Cleghorn.
Mr. & Mrs. Oscar Crail have moved into the Nielsen apartments. Mrs. Crail will teach 5th grade at the Marcus Community School this year.
Patricia Flanagan daughter, of Mr. & Mrs. Earl Flanagan and Lorenzo Donarico, son of Mr. & Mrs. Lorenzo Donarico of Omaha, were united in marriage July 31 at Holy Name Church.
A bridal shower honoring Rose Mary Nacke was held Sunday afternoon, August 7 at Holy Name Church.
Arrangements for the observance of Dr. M F. Joynt’s fiftieth anniversary in Marcus and as a doctor are complete. Features of the day, next Sunday will be a program at the Playground in the Municipal building in the evening.
A Hereford belonging to Rodney Ogren was named Grand Champion at the 4-H achievement show held at Cherokee last week.

The D-X station is advertising that Muscatine Melons will be available in Marcus every Wednesday.
The Marcus Jaycees will play the Junior Legion team Sunday afternoon at the school ball diamond.
Carl F. Johnson, 73, passed away Friday, August 7 a the Sioux Valley Memorial hospital in Cherokee following an illness of several weeks.
Ben Beck was pleasantly surprised Tuesday afternoon of last week when a group of neighbors and friends came to help him celebrate his 89th birthday.
Albert Grauer underwent surgery at the Lutheran Hospital in Sioux City and is now recuperating at home.

Mr. & Mrs. Harold Schlenger, of Marcus marked their golden wedding anniversary on Jun e30 with an open house at Grace United Methodist Church.
David Peterson, son of Mr. & Mrs. Carl Peterson, Marcus, is presently taking basic training at Fort Leonard Wood.
Nancy Hohbach of Marcus graduated from Westmar College, July 30, with a bachelor of science degree and a major in elementary education.
Robert Bergland, 19, son of Mr. & Mrs. Arnold Berglund of rural Quimby, was killed about 4:00 p.m. when the car in which he was driving alone went into a ditch and over turned.
50 Years Ago -1975
Mrs. Clara Bird was admitted to Floyd Valley hospital in LeMars Monday evening.
Mrs. Jeannine Berger was a contestant in the state beef cook off held at Adventureland, August 30.
Gail Bancroft will be honored at an open shower Thursday, August 14 at Faith Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Clarence Mousel, 61, Alton died August 2 at an Orange City hospital. She is the sister of Mrs. Richard (Ruth) Keffeler of Marcus.
45 Years Ago – 1980
Mr. & Mrs. Loren Lukins, of Marcus, are the proud parents of their first child, a son born on Thursday, July 31, at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee.
The winners of the crazy days drawing at Hoover Oil Co. were Ray Door and Minnie Wood. Both receive a free car service.
Word has been received here sof the death of Nicolas “Buss” King, 59, a former resident of Marcus, on Saturday morning, August 2.
