Season of Change

By Mari Radtke
After 41 years of service to Farmers State Bank, Steve Kunzweiler is taking retirement. He began his career at Farmers State Bank in December 1983 after graduating from University of Iowa and spending some summers interning there. He was hired as an officer in training.
Through the years Steve filled positions as Assistant Cashier, Cashier, Assistant Vice President Vice President and became President. He served as President and CEO until February 2025.
Some of the biggest changes affecting the banking industry through his tenure come from the technology adopted, regulations and changes in the farming practices. He also saw different faces, both with customers as well as employees.
Under his deft hand, Kunzweiler led the bank as it built onto it building adding both space and a drive through. He has been active in the community serving on the Fire/Ambulance Department for 25 years. He retired from that as Chief, “a while back.” He, along with Kim Means and Dave Stevenson volunteered uncounted hours bringing the former “Muller Building” into a habitable place. Since their generous effort, it has served as a Melanders and is currently a local favorite hot spot, “Ole Panhead.”
His contributions benefited many local and area organizations with his leadership by serving on boards and committees. Among those organizations are Plains Area, Revolving Loan Fund, Heartland Care Center and MEDCO. Steve looks forward to continuing to serve Heartland Care Center and as Chair of Farmers State Bank Board of Directors.
“I am both excited and nervous,” Steve said of retirement. His wife Luann is still working. He expects much of immediate focus will be on his kids and grandkids who are both near and far.
“I have confidence in the people, the management and staff of Farmers State Bank going forward. The transition will be good,” he said.
