100 Years Ago – 1925
With the coming spring local baseball fans are beginning to talk about the possibility of organizing a baseball team this season. Remsen has already organized and Newell raised $3,000 in two hours recently. A meeting to talk the baseball situation over will be called in Marcus soon.
Lewis Radcliffe arrived in Marcus Friday evening from Whittier, California for a short visit. Mr. & Mrs. Radcliffe have toured the west for the past eight months due to the health of their son.
W.W. Hamilton and family celebrated their 10th anniversary of their coming to Marcus by moving into their new home on Elm Street which is now nearing completion.
Mr. Ed Keleher and Mrs. William Garvin will operate the O’Connell millinery this coming season.
Mrs. Charles McConnell returned to Marcus Monday evening after a two week stay with her husband who is ill in the St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City. Mr. McConnell is able to sit up in bed and may return to his home if his condition continues to improve.
105 Years Ago -1920

90 Years Ago -1935
Loren Dorr, a member of the junior class of the Marcus public high school was the first place winner in the oratorical division of the pre-district declamatory contest held at Onawa Tuesday evening. This is the highest any speaker from the Marcus school has gone in the state competition for a number of years.
Thirty trees of several varieties have been received from a nursery by the playground community which will be set out in the south part of the Marcus playground Friday night of this week.
A committee appointed by Clarence Beck, president of the Better Marcus Club plans to meet this week to get the settlements of property owners on the questions of paving Main Street and on block or more each way from the intersections. The committee is comprise of James Rae, W.L. Gund, Jay Peters and S. Londegan.
Forty hours of devotions will be held in Holy Name church beginning next Sunday after Mass. Several visiting priests will be present to assist Father Cooke and Father Ahlers.
Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Porter were pleasantly surprised on Saturday evening by long distance telephone calls from their sons, Roy, Ray and Ted who live in Minneapolis and who called to congratulate their parents on their 37th wedding anniversary which was Saturday

The Marcus Hardware will reopen April 6 with walls and ceiling painted in the latest pastel shades of blue and green and a complete re-arrangement of stock, it is announced by Wendell Phillips who will operate the store formerly operated by James Rae.
Patrick Hughes, a Remsen farmer well known to many here, was killed Tuesday afternoon less than a male from his farm.
John Schreier topped all the Northwest Iowa bowlers who have entered the Grauer Recreation tournament with an amazing 708 in the singles competition.
Word has been received here from Winnipeg, Canada of the death of Jack Stewart a former Marcus resident.
Mr. & Mrs. Frank Burch are the proud parents of a daughter born Sunday afternoon at the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
80 Years Ago – 1945
Memorial services for First Lt. Russell Rohlfsen who was killed in a plane crash March 7, on Mortal Island were held at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in LeMars Sunday, March 25.
Ensign and Mrs. Kenneth Kirchoff are the parents of a daughter born to them at the Sioux Valley Hospital on Friday, March 23.
A very worthy honor was extended to Rev. Fremont Faul recently through the invitation of Rust College of holly Springs, Mississippi to be the speaker for the annual Religious Emphasis Week of the College.
Relatives received word here Saturday that Mrs. Frank Porter passed away at Huron, South Dakota.
Mr. & Mrs. Richard Peterson and family were honored at a surprise housewarming last Sunday evening.
75 Years Ago -1950
Mr. & Mrs. Ernest Kauffman returned home recently from Lebanon, Pennsylvania where they had spent three and a half weeks visiting with the former’s brothers and sisters.
The interior of the new McKernan Cash Store is being redecorated.
The present officers of the Marcus fire department are Chief Howard Peavey; Assistant Chief John Clarkson; Secretary-Treasurer Wendell Grauer and Fire Marshall Felix Treinen.
Ed Delaney, manager of the Lyric Theatre, here was host to 15 members of the Allied Theatre owners on Thursday.
Floyd Sylvester formerly of Marcus, passed away at his home in Redlands, California on Wednesday, March 22.

Chuck’s Electric will be formally opened this Saturday with an open house in its quarters in the Klingborg building at the rear of the Hey Leather Store. Operator of the new business is Charles Nielsen.
Mr. & Mrs. Lloyd Tentinger are the parents of a daughter born on Wednesday, March 23 in Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Merle Duane Prunty, son of Mr. & Mrs. Merle Prunty, has been initiated into Phi Theta Pi International honorary business fraternity affiliated with the American Institute of Business in Des Moines.
The Marcus public school will be host to one of the state music contest May 6 & 7. Gathering here will be 1400 to 1800 young musicians, all members of the larger vocal groups and school bands.
Charles Nielsen has accepted the position of Cub Scoutmaster for the local troop, Community members are Dick DeVries, chairman, Howard Peavy, Nathan Rowan and Herman Fischer.

Henry Zembsch, 74, of Marcus died suddenly Sunday evening March 27 at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
The community of Marcus will have a fine new library in the not too far distant future, through the benevolence of the late Mr. & Mrs. W.L. Gund who lost their lives in an airline disaster March 17.
Mr. & Mrs. Herman Fischer entertained at a dinner Sunday in honor of Mrs. Fischer’s parents, Mr. & Mrs. Otto Anderson of Aurelia on their 58th wedding anniversary.
During the month of July the town of Marcus and surrounding communities will start the change over to the new telephone system of dial if all goes according to schedule.
A total of $162.50 was gleaned in this community by the recent heart fund drive, spearheaded by Mrs. Charles Knudson and Mrs. James Smith.

Richard Schroeder, 21 of rural Remsen, was killed early Friday in a collision of his car with a truck on a country gravel road two miles west and ¾ mile South of Remsen.
Nancy Boyd, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Paul Boyd of Marcus, will be the 1966 co-editor of The tower annual yearbook of Northwest Missouri State College at Maryville, Missouri.
Marilyn Ray Treinen, 17, has named by the Plymouth County Farm Bureau Women’s group as their choice to receive one of the scholarships given each year by Farm Bureau Women.
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon March 25 from the First Congregational Church in Kingsley for Wilbur Hodgen 74, Mr. Hodgen passed away Tuesday, March 23 at St. Joseph Mercy hospital in Sioux City,
George Ramsy, 66, passed away suddenly Monday, March 21 en-route to a Sioux City hospital.
On April 1 Sandie Stamer, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Stamer of Marcus was diagnosed as a severe juvenile diabetic at the Orange City Hospital.

Hert Nielsen, 78, of Marcus, died March 16 at a LeMars hospital following a short illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Charles Geringer are the parents of their first child, a son, born March 22.
Mr. & Mrs. Dale Bork were honored at a dinner at the home of Marie Nielsen Sunday, March 22 on their 25th wedding anniversary.
Brian Hogue, son of Mr. & Mrs. Leland Hogue was named to the Dean’s list for the first semester at the University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls.
St. Vincent School of Nursing held a capping ceremony Sunday afternoon March 22 at the Sioux City Municipal Auditorium for 41 freshmen students. Receiving their caps were Barbara Meehan, daughter of Mrs. Margaret Meehan and Debra Theisen, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Theisen all of Marcus.
A daughter was born to Mr. & Mrs. Ronald Schilmoeller Wednesday, March 11.

Wayne Simons, 42, of Riverside, California, passed away Saturday evening March 22 following a short illness.
Chris Miller, 78, formerly of Paullina died March 15 at Sauk Center, Minnesota.
Mrs. M.N. Laursen, 74 of Peterson, died March 16 at her home.
Mr. & Mrs. Harry Lindgren of Meriden will observe their 25 wedding anniversary with a dance Saturday night March 29 at the Avalon Ballroom in Remsen.
Julian Evans, 87, died March 22 at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars following a brief illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Walter Dorr were honored on their 55th wedding anniversary at Trinity Lutheran Church, Marcus on March 16.
45 Years Ago – 1980
Mr. & Mrs. Joe Broblek will be honored on Saturday, April 5 on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary.
Marcus Lumber will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary and open house on Friday, March 28.
Mr. & Mrs. Neal Bork, Christian and Courtney hosted a 35th wedding anniversary potluck supper for Mr. & Mrs. Dale Bork on Sunday evening.
Lance Beaton, son of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Beaton of Marcus, has been accepted for enrollment in the Auto Mechanics program at Northwest Iowa Technical College, Sheldon.
Kathy Leavitt earned a total of six top ratings at the state speech contest at Forest City last Saturday. She performed in literary program and in prose reading
