110 Years Ago – 1915
Mr. & Mrs. N.L. Bork are the parents of a son born Friday, December 11.
Fire was discovered Wednesday morning in Harry Grauer’s Cafe by Marshall John Baertling who saw a light through the window as he was passing the restaurant.
105 Years Ago -1920
John Carey Jr, 35 received a fatal wound late Thursday afternoon December 11 when a gun discharged which he was taking down from where it hung in his machine shed.
Born to Mr. & Mrs. John Mangels, a daughter on December 12.
Walter Dickson is greatly suffering from blood poisoning in his right arm caused bruise a week ago.
The farm sale of W.W. Bass on Wednesday made anew record for farm sales in this community. The sale was conducted by Perry Ling and L.E. Toner with Chels Metcalf in the ring and the entire $12,000 worth of stock and machinery was sold in 3 and half hours. The highest priced cow brought $260.
Mr. & Mrs. J. Juhl were presented with a fine New Year’s gift, a son born January 1.
100 Years Ago – 1925
Francis Dunn and sisters Irene, Margaret and Helen, known as the Dunn Agency who nightly deliver the Sioux City Tribune to about 90 places have failed only once to complete their rounds and that was during a blizzard a year ago last March.
Death claimed Mrs. Johanna Benson, 83 at her home of her son-in-law and daughter Mr. & Mrs. C. Christensen in the country on Saturday night January 10.
Marcus people were touched with sorrow when word was received of the death of little Betty Hall, three year old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Ben Hall of Sioux City.
Carl Zangger has rented the Dorr building vacated by the delicatessen and its using it for a cream station.
The Marcus Cafe was formally opened to the public Tuesday night when a splendid chicken dinner was served to over 60 people.
95 Years Ago -1930
The entertainment to be given Wednesday night January 6 for the benefit of the Marcus Library should be attended by a full house. The title of the play to be rendered is “The Spinster’s Convention” and about two dozen people will take part in it.
Stanley Smith was pleasantly surprised by a group of friends last Monday night, the occasion being his birthday anniversary.
Residents of this section are this winter enjoying the first good sleighing for several seasons and it seems like old times to see so many bob sleds.
90 Years Ago -1935
Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Radcliff and sons spent the weekend in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Ben Hall at DesMoines.
Dorothy Miller who attends Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls spent the holidays in the home of her parents Mr. & Mrs. Harry Miller.
Mrs. Charles Brown passed away at her home in Marcus Saturday, January 5 following a lingering illness.
The Collins store on the east side of Main Street is being remodeled to accommodate more stock to answer the demands of an expanding business. In the future the floor space of the store will be nearly twice as large as it previously was.
Mr. & Mrs. Robert Meylor are the parents of a daughter born January 2.
85 Years Ago -1940
C.C. Tarpenning of Thurman, and William Walton of Storm Lake have purchased the Victor Johnson Shoe Shop, tools and equipment. The new owners will open for business Saturday.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at the St. Joseph’s Church in Granville for Mrs. Raymond Ahlers.
Mrs. Arnold Toomey entertained about 10 little boys Saturday afternoon in honor of her sons Jerry’s sixth birthday.
A popular demand is being felt for the erection of a shelter house near the skating rink which has been provided on the local baseball diamond. The skating rink is proving very popular and is daily and nightly being enjoyed by Marcus young folks.
80 Years Ago – 1945
The tragedy of war hit another Cherokee County home last week with the receipt of a telegram from the war department Monday by Mr. & Mrs. Charles of near Clehgorn informing them that their son, Staff Sgt. Elmer Meyer, 24, had been killed in action.
On Sunday evening January 7 about 100 relatives, relatives and neighbors of Mr. & Mrs. George Rabel gathered at the municipal hall in honor of the 25th wedding anniversary of Mr. & Mrs. Rabel which occurred on Saturday, January 6.
Alfred William Bengston, 45 and the father of two young children, passed away at his farm home Wednesday afternoon January 3 following an illness of several months.
Mr. & Mrs. Merle Cave entertained a group of friends and neighbors last Wednesday evening in honor of their son James who left last Friday for service.
A daughter was born to Ph. M. and Mrs. Wesley Proctor December 31 at the navy hospital in Brooklyn, New York.
The city bowling tournament will start at Rex’s Bowling Alleys on Friday, December 29 for team bowling.
Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Ohlendorf, Gary, Ricky and Connie were guests Christmas day in the William Ohlendorf home to help them celebrate their silver wedding anniversary.
75 Years Ago -1950
A farewell party was held Friday evening in honor or Mr. & Mrs. Ernest Luneberg. The guests enjoyed a social event of visiting and card playing after which a delicious lunch was served by the self invited guests.
Mr. & Mrs. Charlie Meyer were surprised at their home by a group of relatives on Friday evening January 6 on their 35th wedding anniversary.
Services will be held Friday afternoon at the Nelson Funeral Home for Mrs. Helen Sweet, 84, who passed away at her home Wednesday morning. Mrs. Sweet was an early settler of Marcus having come here in 1887.
Hans Raun, 79, and former resident of Marcus, passed away at his home in Sioux City December 30.
Mrs. Anna Berendes, 79 a resident of this community for forty three years, passed away at her home in Marcus Thursday evening.
70 Years Ago -1955
A flashing railroad crossing signal will be installed at the Illinois Central crossing on Highway 143 according to word received by officials of the town of Marcus.
Funeral service for John Carlson, 82, a former Marcus resident were held in the English Lutheran Church at Lake Benton, Minnesota Tuesday afternoon.
Mr. & Mrs. Melvin Dorr are the parents of a son born Thursday, January 6 in Sioux Valley Hospital at Cherokee.
175 relatives and friends attended open house at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Arley Schmillen Sunday, January 2 in honor of their silver wedding anniversary.
Mr. & Mrs. Hans Rasmussen entertained at a dinner Sunday in honor of their 47th wedding anniversary.
Mr. & Mrs. Harold Peterson have moved into their new home in east Marcus. Mr. & Mrs. Luther Miller have moved in to their new home on Highway 143.
Mrs. M.J. Kelly received word Monday that her brother Charles Ronan, had passed away in Canada.

Next Tuesday, January 19, will be the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. & Mrs. Herman Treinen of Marcus.
Mrs. Eunice Sender, 68 of Des Moines, passed away Saturday, January 9 following a long illness. Mrs. Swender was born and grew up in Marcus.
Mr. & Mrs. Joe Alesch Sr. will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, January 24 with open house at Holy Name Hall.
Boots Wallin has moved most of his equipment to his new blacksmith ship on west Railroad Street and is now doing business from there.
Mr & Mrs. David Kerr were pleasantly surprised by neighbors, friends and relatives on their 20th wedding, anniversary Wednesday, January 6.
J.E. Dutch Ryan of Marcus will hold a closing out farm sale at the place two miles east and two and a half north of Marcus on January 14.
A surprise farewell party honoring Mr. & Mrs. cle Galles and family was held at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Cy Delaney on New Years Eve.

Howard Montgomery, 63 died Tuesday in Cherokee after an illness of five weeks. His home was at Gran Apartments there.
Mayor J.C. Means has submitted his resignation to the town council effective February 1 and states that he is retiring from public office.
Mr. and Mrs. John Norris of Omaha, Nebraska are parents of a daughter born Tuesday, January 5.
Funeral Services were held Monday morning, January 11 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Sioux City for Mrs. Russell Briggs, 31 who passed away Saturday after a long illness.
Marcus’ one at play “Happy Journey to Canden” by Thornton Wilder, received two ratings of “good” and one “Excellent” at Vermillion Saturday, January 9. The cast included Donna Seel, Sandy Tentinger, John Fry and Alayda Irwin who rated excellent and Julie Davis and Jim Irwin who rated superior.
Mr. & Mrs. Ellis Holmes are the parents of a nine pound son born Christmas morning at the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
A very impressive wedding ceremony took place on Christmas eve at the Nazareth Lutheran church when Miss Vera Eleanor Hendrickson daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Jule Hendrickson, became the bride of Richard Petersen, son of Mr. & Mrs. Carl J. Petersen.
55 Years Ago -1970
Mr. & Mrs. Emery Goodrich who will observe their 50th wedding anniversary Friday, January 9 were honored for the occasion at a family dinner Saturday evening at Uncle Milt’s Restaurant in Cleghorn.
Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Stowater became parents of their first child a son born December 31 at Sioux Valley Hospital.
A large crowd was on hand Sunday evening as Patricia Nielsen was crowned “Marcus Junior Miss” for 1970.
Dale Juhl, son of Mr. & Mrs. Howard Juhl is one of seven Westmar students who will learn about mission work :on location” in New Mexico during the Interim, the period between semesters.
Five MHS students have been chosen to play in the Northwest Iowa Bandmasters Association Festival February 7, Joan Kass will play the flute, Laurie Treinen and Patti Smith the clarinet, Jolene Ferrin the french horn, and Terry Pallesen the trombone.

Mr. & Mrs. William Irwin of rural Pierson will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary their 50th wedding anniversary January 19 with open house at the Meadow Star Church, Washta.
Mr. & Mrs. James Overholt of Palatine, Illinois are the parents of a daughter born January 5.
An open house honoring Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Mayer on their 55th wedding anniversary will be held Sunday, January 19 in the Peace Lutheran Church parlors.
Charles Lens, 70, of Rock Rapids died January 2 at a Luverne, Minnesota hospital.
Patricia Smith, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Jim Smith has accepted a position as a secretary in the nursing department at Morningside College in Sioux City.
45 Years Ago – 1980
Mr. & Mrs. Ivan Theisen of Marcus will ovserve their silver wedding anniversary Friday evening January 11.
Mr. & Mrs. Arnold Ruden of Marcus will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary on Sunday, January 13 starting with a Mass at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus.
Greg and Diane Pallesen of Myrtle Creek, Ogren are the proud parents of a new daughter born January 3.
Mrs. Harvey White, 64, passed away suddenly on Tuesday morning January 8 at her home here in Marcus.
Over 100 relatives gathered at the VFW Hall in Cherokee on Saturday, December 29 for a family dinner held to honor Mr. & Mrs. Dale Mansfield of Marcus on their 50th wedding anniversary.
