110 Years Ago – 1914
Jim Heywood left last Friday for Independence Iowa to attend the golden wedding anniversary of his grandparents.
Residents of this section are enjoying the first snow by sleighing.
Farmland in Iowa has increased in value in the last ten years. According to the table of standards issued recently by the US Department of Agriculture, the average increase in Iowa farm land in the last ten year has been 57.30 per acre.
Stanley Smith was pleasantly surprised by a group of friends last Friday night, the occasion being his birthday. After a great evening of games. Stanley was presented with a gold knife by those present

Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Herbert departed Wednesday night for Kansom, Illinois to spend the Christmas holidays.
Mr. & Mrs. John Meyer and son of Walsey. South Dakota arrived Tuesday to visit with his parents Mr. & Mrs Fred Meyer.
100 Years Ago – 1924
Mr. & Mrs. Clinton Weber are the parents of a son born to them December 5.
Dr. R.P. McDonald was elected commander of the Goodburn Post American Legion in Marcus.
Miss Pearl Sims is expected home Saturday from Hastings, Nebraska where she is teaching home economics in the public school.

Rev. Father Norbort Georges arrived Friday from Chicago to spend several days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.G. Georges.

Oscar Heline was on of the farmers called before the Republican Committee at Des Moines.
Fire broke out in the furnace room of the Novar Ballroom owned by Nagle Brothers before noon Wednesday.
Dale Anderson, son of Mr., & Mrs, Ed Anderson, is recovering from a fractured hip and back injury.
A good crowd attended the American Legion trap shoot one mile south of Marcus. Joe Ament and committee has charge of the event.
80 Years Ago – 1944
Last rites for Mrs. Myrtle Walsh, 44, who passed away on Saturday, December 23 at her home in Alta were held on Wednesday afternoon at the Wilinson Funeral Home in Alta with burial in the holy Name Cemetery in Marcus.
The BWSCGD Pinochle Club was entertained at a Christmas Party at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Harvey Geibe, The thirty fourth wedding anniversary of Mr. & Mr. Geibe was also celebrated.
Members of the Official Board of the Methodist Church surprised Rev. and Mrs. Fremont Faul Sunday evening December 24 following the Christmas program in the church. The occasion was their twenty fifth wedding anniversary.
Friday, December 22 marked the 88th birthday of Mrs. Mary Holm and to help her celebrate this gala occasion twenty two of her neighbors and friends walked in and spent the afternoon visiting. The afternoon was topped off with a lovely luncheon.
Private William Horstman, 23, has been awarded the combat Infantryman’s Badge of Superior Performance of Duty in combat on the front lines in France and Germany.

Mrs. Anna Berendes, 70, a resident of this community for forty three years passed away at her home in Marcus Thursday evening December 22 after a long illness.
Loyd Elkins, 38 of McCook Lake, Nebraska, died Monday night in the St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City. A nephew of Mrs., Anna Bancroft and Mrs. Josephine Anderson of Marcus, he was the twenty first person to die as a result of the December 14th explosion in the Swift Packing Co. building in Sioux City.
James Dalton, 69, passed away Christmas morning in a hospital in Compton, California where he had been making his home with a daughter. Mrs. Ray Taylor.
Hans Rohlfson, 103, a former resident of Marcus, passed away quietly at Sibley, Iowa Sunday, December 24 where he had made his home with a daughter, Mrs. Louise Tangeman.
Mr. & Mrs. Joe Galvin of Arnolds Park Iowa celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Tuesday December 27. Mr. & Mrs. Galvin are former residents of Marcus.
70 Years Ago -1954
Mr. & Mrs. James Olson are the parents of a son born December 25 at the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Mrs. M.J. Kelly received word Monday that her brother, Charles Ronan a long time resident of Medicine hat in the Province of Alberta, Canada, had suffered a heart attack on December 26 and was critically ill. Early Tuesday morning Mrs. Kelly was notified he had passed away.
Mrs. Ray Juhl entertained thirteen guests last Wednesday afternoon December 22 after school honoring her daughter, Carolyn on her 14th birthday.
Keith Hey accompanied by four other delegates left Omaha Monday for Milwaukee, Wisconsin to attend a convention of Alpha Phi Omega held at the Schroeder hotel in the city on December 28-29.
The Marland Theatre closed its door here Monday evening until further notice. Charles Nielsen, who has been operating the business for the past several months, stated that lack of patronage necessitated the action.

A new sewer plant for the town of Marcus became almost a certainty with Tuesday’s announcement that Marcus had been allocated $31,000 in federal funds for the project.
Mr. & Mrs. Laurence Rudy of Spirit Lake are the parents of a son born Monday, December 28.
Carl, Lingborn, suffered a stroke Sunday morning and is now undergoing treatment at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Sioux City.
Mr. and Mrs. George Rabel will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary Sunday, January 3 with an open house in their home.
Roy Goodrich, 47 prominent Cleghorn businessman, died Tuesday in St. Joseph’s hospital in Sioux City. He has been ill for about three months.

Phyllis Burch, senior at Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, has been elected to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.
Mr. & Mrs. Tom King, former resident of Marcus for forty three years, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on December 29 at Hooven, Ohio.
Mr. & Mrs. Gary Rasmussen are proud parents of a daughter born Thursday, December 24.
Funeral services for Edward Keleher were held December 19 with a Requim Mass at St. Joseph Church in Wilmette, Illinois.
The Marcus Fire Department was called to the Bass Livestock Office Saturday evening on the Illinois Central Railway by a fire that some how got started adjacent to the north wall. Some damage was done to the interior of the building.
The News this week carries the announcement of the sale of the Evans Implement Co. to Claude Gross, who has been with the concern for some time, and Bernard McCoy of LeMars.

Mrs. Leroy Salzkorn, 78 of Primghar passed away Monday morning after a long illness.
Mrs. Mary Hollar of Des Moines passed away suddenly December 21. She was the wife of William Hollar formerly of Clehgorn.
A son was born to Mr. & Mrs. Jack Dawson of LeMars on Friday, December 9.
Chuck Nielsen, son of Mr, & Mrs. Charles Nielsen of Marcus, will become president of the student body of the University of South Dakota at Vermillion on January 1.
Staff Sgt. Kenneth Roberson recently was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal according to a recent press release.
50 Years Ago -1974
Bryan Campbell, 76 of Cleghorn died Sunday at the Tuscon, Arizona after a long illness. He had rsided on a farm near Cleghorn.
Brian Gates, son of Mr. & Mrs. Ray Gates of Marcus, a Red Raider from Marcus left on December 17th for the North College Red Raiders trip to Japan. The Red Raider football team will play two games against the Japanese All-Stars.
Mr. & Mrs. Wayne Kolbeck announce the arrival of a baby boy born Friday, December 20.
The Honor Society announced the selection of these students from the senior class to membership into the National Honor Society: Barb Fry, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Fry, Karen Pallesen, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Kenny Pallesen, Ruth Williams, daughter of Mr., & Mrs. Gus Willems, Julie Meylor daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Jerry Meylor.
Services for “Mike” Rees, of Sioux City was held Monday at the Christy Funeral Home in Morningside. Mr. Rees died Friday morning at a Sioux City nursing home.

Mrs. Ethel Waller, 92 passed away Wednesday, December 19 at the Sioux Valley hospital in Cherokee following a several month illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Richard Goody of Iowa City are the parents of a son born December 4.
Mr. & Mrs Harley Neir entertained at a party which honored Mildred Leavitt and Margaret Nelson on their birthdays and Mr. & Mrs. Dwight Moats on their anniversary on Saturday night.
