110 Years Ago – 1914
Catherine Schuerer celebratd her 97th birthday recently. She is the oldest resident at the Colonial Manor of Amana nursing home and the Oldest Amana Society member.
105 Years Ago -1919
Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Dorr are the parents of a son born December 16.
Mr. & Mrs. Lovell Simons entertained 25 young people at their home on Friday evening.
Some of the yearling heifers sold at the Otto Schneider public sale brought as high as $70.00.
Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Herbert departed Wednesday night for Illinois to spend the Christmas holidays.
100 Years Ago – 1924
Mr. & Mrs. William Dickson are the parents of a daughter born on November 27.
Mrs. Henry Abels Sr. is now sale proprietor of the Delicatessen Shop.
Funeral services were held in the Methodist Church last Thursday afternoon for Mrs. Andrew Rae. She is survived by two sons Donald and Guy of Marcus and seven sisters.
George Kuhl, proprietor of the Meat Market here for the last couple years has completed a deal which he will become owner of the Star Meat Market owned by Flaherty and Bancroft.
95 Years Ago -1929
Charles Quirin passed away at his home after a month’s illness of intense suffering.
Last week Mrs. Merle Cave won several prizes on the chinchilla rabbits she entered in the Sioux City Poultry and Rabbit Show.
Ronald Delaney of Omaha enjoyed a Christmas day visit with his parents Mr. & Mrs. John Delaney.
Mr. & Mrs. Ziquard Nelson are the parents of a daughter born Friday, December 20.
Mr. & Mrs. Joe Martinson are the parents of a son born in Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars on Sunday, December 22.
Christmas Day over this community was celebrated in a quiet way with many family reunions. The weather was balmy and seemed like spring. Many went for rides in the country.
85 Years Ago -1939
Roger Leavitt was elected president of the Better Marcus Club for 1940 Monday night at a big meeting attended by about 90 guests.
Mr. & Mrs. Paul Wankum are the proud parents of a daughter born to them December 5.
The high school basketball team is being shaped up for the first game with Paullina Friday night on the Paullina court.
The Christmas cantata “The Christ Is Come” under the direction of Ruth Peterson will be presented by the Methodist choir Sunday evening December 17. Choir and solo numbers are included sung by a choir of 24 voices.
The following were elected officers of the local Mason, Seba Lodge No 463: George Lukins, worshipful master; Ira Hinspeter, senior warden; Bryon Campbell, junior warden and J.W. Nield, treasurer, F.E. Paine was re-elected secretary.
80 Years Ago – 1944
Pvt. Carl Mayer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Mayer of Marcus, is now stationed at Carlsbad, New Mexico, Army Air Field, the world’s largest bombardier school, where he is gaining valuable experience as an on the line trainee.
AAF. Pacific Ocean Area, Western Pacific Award of the Air Medal with an Oak Leaf Cluster to 2nd Lt. Paul J. Bird of Marcus for frequent participation in aerial flights against the enemy has been made at a 7th AAF heavy bomber base in the Marinas.
The largest farm sale ever held in the community of Marcus was the Jim Edgar sale December 14, according to auctioneers AA Woltman and Perry King who cried the sale. The crowd was estimated at 1,300.
75 Years Ago -1949
Marlene Meehan, Holy Name sophomore, submitted the winning name in the contest sponsored by the Sand’s Seed Service for the purpose of finding a trade name for their product. The winning name was “Star Brand.”
A new Wicks pipe organ which was contracted by the Holy Name Church in September of 1948 has arrived and will be ready for use at the Christmas service.
A family of displaced persons from Latvia will arrive in Marcus next Tuesday to make their home. Latvia is one of three small countries bordering Russia on the north which have been “liberated” by the Reds. The newcomers are J. Krisjansonf, his wife Alma son, Jucis, 16 and a daughter Biruta 13.
Lois Bierman, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Ray Bierman of Pierson was one of 376 persons to be graduated from Iowa State College Saturday December 17. She received the Bachelor of Science degree in Institution Management in the division of Home Economics.
A group of 27 relatives and friends gathered in the Reinhardt Olson home Sunday to surprise Mr. Olson on his birthday anniversary.
70 Years Ago -1954
Mrs. Mary Gill Marcus’ oldest resident, reached the age of 99 years with her birthday Sunday and shows every indication of reaching the century mark.
Charles Robinson, 79, brother of Mrs. George Grauer, of Marcus died Monday as a result of injuries suffered in a fall downstairs at the home of his son Roy Robinson at Cherokee.
Mr. & Mrs. Arley Schmillen will celebrate their silver wedding anniversary with open house on Sunday, January 2.
Mr. & Mrs. Vernon Hueser of Radford, Virginia are the parents of twins, a boy and a girl born on December 16.
Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Miller of Marcus escaped without injury but their automobile received about $100 damages when it struck a dear near Gutenburg, NE last Wednesday.
65 Years Ago -1959
Earnest Lehnhoff 65, died at his home Friday, December 15 after suffering a heart attack. Mr. Lehnhoff will be remembered by many Marcus people having worked in this community a number of years ago before moving to Farley, Iowa
Mr. & Mrs. Robert Johnson are the parents of a son born Monday, December 14 at Sioux Valley Hospital.
Ed Auchstetter, 69, of Lakewood California and a former Marcus resident passed away Monday, December 21 following a stroke suffered a week ago.
60 Years Ago -1964
Rev. and Mrs. Fremont Faul will be honored on their 45th wedding anniversary at an open house Sunday, December 27 at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Lyle Schlenger.
Marcus will be well represented on the Big Bowl program which has been a feature of Channel 9 at Sioux City for a number of years. Next Sunday Mrs. Leonard Smith will bowl against Dorothy Dean of Sioux Falls in first round competition. On the following Sunday Larry Slagter will meet Bradley Curtis also of Sioux Falls.
A son was born to Mr. & Mrs, Tom Hueser Monday, December 21 at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Mr. & Mr.s Wilbur Shefstad and Mr. & Mrs. Frank Shefstad of Remsen were called to Clintonville, Wisconsin by the death of their father L.J. Shefstad who passed away December 15.

Mr. & Mrs. James Alesch are the parents of a daughter born on Tuesday, December 9 at Sioux Valley hospital in Cherokee.
A surprise potluck supper was given by the Neighborhood Club in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Weldon Ohlendorf for Mr. & Mrs. Donald Gettner and family on Monday evening December 15. Mr. & Mrs. Gettner and family will be leaving soon for north Carolina where they will be going to school.
Mr. & Mrs. Emil Johnson were honored guests at dinner Thursday evening at the Chalet in Cherokee in observance of their 40th wedding anniversary.
Mrs. Melvin Dorr has been named to the library board to fill the vacancy made by the resignation of Mrs. Evan Quinn who has served on the board since August 1964.
50 Years Ago -1974
Scholars of the month for December are freshman: Cindy Collins sophomores; Rodney Ebert, Kevin Schmillen; juniors: Rick Dreckman; seniors: Chris Bond and Patti Bies. Students are named by teachers and classmates for outstanding improvement during improvement during each month.
Ralph Hueser, Bellevus, NE was ordained a deacon in the Catholic church during rites held at St. Cecilia’s Cathedral in Omaha, NE on December 15. Ralph is the son of Mr. & Mrs. George Hueser of Marcus.
The Marcus Eagles defeated the Kingsley Pierson Panthers here Tuesday night by the score of 65-48. The leading scorer for the Eagles was sophomore Scott Bork who has 15 points, Rick Dreckman added 11 points and Rodney Ebert had 10 points.
Kirk Baumgardner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Merle Baumgardner, has received word that he has been accepted in the school of dentistry at Iowa University in Iowa City.
Mr. & Mrs. Larry Keffeler of Ukiah, California are parents of a baby born Thursday, December 5.
45 Years Ago – 1979
The Hawkeye club was destroyed by fire Sunday evening December 16 which is thought to have started in the upstairs portion of the building.
Mrs. Lawrence Radcliffe, 86 of Marcus, died Saturday December 15 at Sioux Valley Memorial hospital in Cherokee following a short illness.
Roy Nelson, a well known and prominent figure about town, has retired as a director on the board at the Farmers State Bank in Marcus.
The children of Mr. & Mrs. Dale Mansfield invite you to clebrate with them the 50th wedding anniversary of their parents. A dance will be held on Saturday, December 29 at the VFW in Cherokee and a reception on Sunday, December 30 at the United Methodist Church in Marcus.
Mr. & Mrs. Roger Haahr of Fort Dodge are the parents of their first child, a daughter, born December 13 at Trinity Hospital in Fort Dodge.
