105 Years Ago -1919
A wave of prosperity and development has struck Cleghorn and it is noticeable to all visitors. Two handsome new buildings are being erected. The new consolidated school building and the J.S. Robinson and Sons brick block.
Joseph Richards, a well known citizen, was injured recently when he fell on a defective walk near the fire station, injuring his head.
Mrs. Catherine Treinen is seriously ill at her home in this city and her recovery is doubtful. Last Friday morning Mrs. Treinen was found at the bottom of the stairs in an unconscious condition and it is believed she fell the entire flight. Mrs. Treinen did not regain consciousness for three days following the injury.
Dorothy, the little daughter of James Meylor, underwent a tonsil operation at Sioux City this week.
100 Years Ago – 1924
Sjostrom Brothers, local produce dealers, have commenced the erection of a new business block on Main Street to replace the building wiped out by the disastrous fire a month ago.
The members of the IOOF are planning a father son banquet to be held Thursday evening November 20. Toastmasters will be A.J. Thomson and P.R. Harshbarger.
The Halloween carnival given at the school building last Friday evening was a huge success and gave “Young America” an opportunity to celebrate. The net receipts $163, will go to the “M” Club.
Miss Christine Lundquist formerly of Marcus, sustained injuries from burns at her home near Stanton, Nebraska which resulted in her death Tuesday morning.
Mr. & Mrs. Will Anderson are the proud parents of a son born Wednesday, October 22.
95 Years Ago -1929
Word has been received of the birth of a son to Mr. and Mrs. William Finley of Sterling, Colorado. Mrs. Finley will be remembered as Miss Gertrude Ryan.
Mrs. L.J. McGivern and Mrs. R.P. McDonald will preside as hostesses this evening at a Halloween party.
The pheasant season opened Wednesday morning in the open counties with the boom of shotgun in the corn fields. In many sections of the country, hunters bagged their limit of three before noon.
85 Years Ago -1939
James Edgar is recovering at his home following a heart attack Sunday evening.
John Sand left by plane from Omaha, Nebraska Tuesday afternoon for Los Angeles, California where he was called by the serious illness of his father, Frank Sand.
Mr. & Mr.s Lars Anderson were pleasantly surprised by their children and their families Wednesday on their 55th wedding anniversary.
80 Years Ago – 1944
Oscar Heline of Marcus, well known in state agricultural and cooperative circles, has been re-elected to the Farm Credit district board.
With the Fifth Army, Italy Staff Sgt. Raymond Flanagan of Marcus recently was awarded the Bonze Star for heroic achievement in action. His parents are Mr. & Mrs. James Flanagan, Route 2 Marcus.
Mr. & Mrs. Charles Kohn and Miss Regina McLaughlin attended the funeral services of Mrs. Mathilda McLaughlin at Fonda Saturday. She passed her 85th birthday in October.
Henry Dorr Sr. returned home on Tuesday evening from Excelsior Spring, Missouri wher ehe has been for the past month taking health treatments.
A reunion of four boys from Marcus and vicinity was celebrated when John Ogren, son of Mr. & Mrs. John Ogren, Tom an dKenneth Birch, sons of A.J. Birch and Paul Polson, son of Nels Polson near Remsen met recently in England.
75 Years Ago -1949
The Marcus Eagles finished a fairly successful football season November 4 winning three and losing five games. The team was pretty light this year and met some good opposition, but gave a good account of itself generally.
Funeral services were held in the Nelson Funeral home Friday afternoon for Mrs. William Petrie, 80, a former resident of Marcus.
More than seventy five friends and relatives attend an open house in the Ray Muehl home Thursday afternoon in observance of their silver wedding anniversary.
Mr. & Mrs. Cy Brownmiller entertained a few relatives for dinner Sunday in observance of their 11th wedding anniversary.
Jerry Pallesen, son of Mr. & Mrs. Nels Pallesen, was the successful competitor for the position of clerk in the Marcus post office and is now on the job.
70 Years Ago -1954
Funeral services for Anton Anderson, 72 of Marcus will be held Friday afternoon at Nazareth Lutheran Church here with the Rev. J.E,. Jacobsen officiating.
Thomas Kelly of Minneapolis died there Sunday, October 31 following an operation. Mr. Kelly, 71 was a former resident of Marcus leaving here as a young man.
The Eagles of the Marcus public school will open the basketball wars officially next Tuesday evening when they and their feminine counterparts meet Kingsley’s two teams on the Marcus floor.
The Marcus Fire Department was called to the Mark Garvin residence Monday for a grass fire which was extinguished without any damage.

The Tigerettes, Iowa Wesleyan’s nationally famous women’s basketball team will meet an all star team from Russia in Denver, Colorado on Tuesday, December 8.
Nothern Natural Gas Company whose pipelines supply Iowa Public Service Company, will make its eighth rate increase since 1950 effective December 27. The increase will cost IPS an extra $833,475 per year.
Wayne Sanow a Marcus truck driver, is nursing a painfully injured right hand received last Thursday. He was hitching a chain fastened to another truck when his truck rolled backward, pinning his hand between the two trucks. One finger was broken, a second crushed and another lacerated. There will be an informal open house a the Methodist Church parlors on Sunday, November 22 honoring Mr. & Mrs. George Grauer on their 50th wedding anniversary.
Max Marty Anderson entertained a group of friends at a pizza party Friday evening in the home of their parents, Mr. & Mrs. Ab Anderson.
60 Years Ago -1964
Thieves broke into the Johnson Hardware here early Sunday morning and made off with about $200 worth of shotgun and rifle shells and about $20 in silver from the till.
Mr.s Pauline Geringer, 80 passed away Saturday, November 7 at a Sutherland nursing funeral home following a long illness.
A major improvement project underway at the Farmers Cooperative Elevator plat here. It is a new business office and scales a project voted favorable upon about three years ago and reaffirmed by the present board.
War Eagle Conference Champion Marcus placed three players on the all conference football team as did Leads and LeMars Gehlen, Riverside and Sgt. Bluff each nabbed one spot. Lineman named were Steve Hagey and LeRoy Reinert of Marcus, Randy York and Roger Hooks of Leeds, Dave Osborne of Riverside and Jim Dirkson and Ron Treinen of Gehlen. The backfield consists of Denny Boots of Marcus, Jerry Karr of Leeds, Bill Groetken of Gehlen and Dave Lee of Sgt. Bluff.
Mr. & Mrs. Jake Dixson Jr. are the parents of a son born Friday, November at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee.
55 Years Ago -1969
Paul Wiebersch, 18 of Marcus escaped with a bruised and painful leg injury from an accident of the type that often proves fatal. On Tuesday morning while helping load cattle at the Jim Sand farm south of Marcus, a diesel tractor he was herding cattle with upset and pinned him to the ground.
Mr. & Mrs. William Ament of Marcus will celebrate their golden anniversary with an open house on Sunday, November 23 at Holy Name Hall here.
Richard Rhodes, 38 of Cleghorn was killed instantly Tuesday evening when his car struck a combine on Highway 3 four miles west of Marcus.
The News this week carries an advertisement announcing the Niemann Jewelry sale. Ray Niemann, owner of what is the oldest family business in Marcus, will retire when the stock has been liquidated.
Mr. & Mrs. Dean Drefke became the parents of their first child a daughter born Monday, November 10 at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars.
50 Years Ago -1974
Charles Auchstetter, 88 of Marcus died November 8 at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee after a ten week illness.
Jack Foresman and Vernon Wester received plaques of appreciation for their years of service on the Meriden Cleghorn board of education having served twelve and six years respectively. Presentations were made by James Prunty, president of the board.
Mr. & Mrs. Clifford Puhrmann will observe their 25th wedding anniversary with an open house reception at the Paullina Library auditorium on Sunday, November 17.
Charles Nielsen, 53, died November 5 at his home n Marcus following a brief illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Gerald Scott of Cleghorn are parents of a daughter born November 5 at SVMH.
45 Years Ago – 1979
Mr. & Mrs. Brian Hogue of Carroll are the parents of a baby girl born Sunday, October 8.
Jane Kosse and Paul Knudson, sophmores, each won purple ribbons at the Paullina speech festival last Saturday. Both are novice readers.
The Meriden-Cleghorn cross country team finished in fifth place with a score of 104 in Class C competition at the state cross country meet held Saturday at Ames.
Lyle and Debbie Rupp, Briggs Villa, Cherokee are the parents of a son born October 29 in Sioux Valley Hospital Hospital.
The junior varsity football team lost a close 16-18 decision to Woodburty Central last Monday night. This is the last JV game for Marcus this year. They ended the season with a 4-4 record.
40 Years Ago –1984
SrA Kevin Alesch, son of Mr. & Mrs. Jim Alesch has graduated with honors from the Aircraft Structural Technology course. Kevin was commended for the superior scholastic accomplishments and positive attitude.
