“Dog Tag” Program

The Northwest Iowa Genealogical Society (NWIGS) will meet on Saturday, November 16 at 1:30 PM at the first-floor music room of the Plymouth County Historical Museum, 335 1st Avenue SW in Le Mars. Following regular business, Jim Jones, Plymouth County Veterans Affairs director, will give a talk on the history of dog tags.
Most Northwest Iowa residents have relatives and friends who are or have served in the nation’s military. Many have served themselves, some during times of war. Moreover, the average American is familiar with the term “dog tag,” but few really know the history.
Jones says that dog tags date back to the Civil War. During his program, he is sure to explain how they got the “tag” and much, much more. Considering the topic, questions come to mind. For instance, who designed them? Are they the same today as in the beginning? What happens to them when the active soldier retires? What came first, tags for dogs, or tags for soldiers? Undoubtedly, Jones will answer these, and any other inquiries that arise.
Genealogy members are delighted to host Jones’s talk this month, as his original January appearance was canceled due to inclement weather. The public is welcome to attend this free event, and refreshments will be served.
