The annual “Husman Family Golf Classic” was held on Saturday July 20, 2024 at the Marcus Community golf course. The tournament was promoted as the 46th year, but after hours of research on the Marcus Library digital archives site, the correction was made. Not one to point fingers, but somebody who calls Dennis, “Denny”, and has a bit of South Dakota sarcasm writing style, might be responsible. It might just be easier to blame “Big Gary”.
A total of 7 teams gathered at the “new” Marcus golf clubhouse at 9:00 a.m.. The traditional Bloody Mary breakfast drink was served, with a shotgun tee off at 9:30. It was a beautiful, slightly overcast, and cool July morning. There were 35 golfers competing for the coveted trophy. The teams competing included team “John Deere”, “Gopher Golfers”, “American Powerwashing”, “South Dakota Husman’s”, “Hawkeyes”, “Team Goebel” and the “Missouri Husman’s”. The scores were again tightly grouped this year, with a tie being broken by going to the score card handicap holes. The trophy went home with the “Missouri Husman’s”.
The family then proceeded to the shelter house at the Marcus Fairgrounds, where over 60 of Willie and Bonnie’s family gathered. Gloria, Karen, Pam, Janice, and the other Pam had everything ready for the clan. There was plenty of food and conversation. The award ceremony and hole prizes were presented by Mike the “Commish”. It took a little work, but photos of the assembled family were taken. The family also went to the Heartland Care Center. Willie and Bonnie both spent their final days surrounded by the love and care from the staff at Heartland. We are forever grateful. A “Hoyer Lift” for patient care, was gifted in honor of Willie and Bonnie. It was great day in our “Hometown”!
