110 Years Ago – 1914
A large number of Marcus residents traveled to Cherokee today to attend the Ringling Brothers Circus.
Francis, a five year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Metzgar, did Friday night after a two day illness of diphtheria.
A.I. Birch of Tilden township raised a field of 75 acres of oats that threshed our 82 bushels to the acre.
Mr. and Mrs. B. Radcliff, Marie Radcliff and Lawrence and Max Radcliff returned Friday from an 1800 mile automobile trip through Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois.
Mamie and Florence Heline were in Sioux City last Thursday to attend the reunion of students of the Augustana College of Rock Island, Illinois. There was over 100 students present.
Remsen and Marcus will cross bats on next Sunday in the local park and a good game is expected to be played.
105 Years Ago -1919
Ira Grauer, son of Mr. & Mrs. John Grauer while cranking a car Sunday evening had the misfortune to have the two small bones just above his right wrist broken.
The world war having come to a close, we are glad to chronicle daughters to the following; Mr. & Mrs. Harold Derthick, born Thursday, July 25 and Mr. & Mrs. George Beaton, Saturday, July 28.
The new elevator building being erected by the Farmers Elevator Company is practically completed. It is a fine new building and thoroughly modern and a credit to Marcus. It is equipped with electric power and man lift containing 12 bins, all hopper bottom. They have a ten ton truck scale 1500 bushels automatic scale and a 100 bushel hopper scale. They also have erected a warehouse 28 x 40 and an office containing two room for the transactions of the company business.
Dancing appears to be growing in popularity with Marcus young people. Manager Sylvester states that his patrons are demanding dances and more dances.
An unusual condition of this years oats crop has been pointed out by Lee Wood, Manager of the Farmers Elevator Company. Mr. Wood states that oats this year was planted two weeks later than usual owing a wet spring. Naturally one would suppose the crop would mature later than usual, but oats began to arrive in Marcus on July 21 a least four days earlier than ever before.
100 Years Ago – 1924
John Carey Sr. for 40 years a resident of Marcus, died suddenly at his home in this city on Friday night August 1. Mr. Carey had been in his usual health until he was stricken with apoplexy which caused his death.
Rev. Fr. Ferinand Georges is home for a brief farewell visit with his parents Mr. & Mrs. A.G. Georges before leaving his native shores for Rome.
Two farmers of this vicinity who are optimistic over the prospect of a bumper crop of corn are giving concrete evidence of the fact by erecting new corn cribs. They are Frank Beck and Ed Douvia.
J. F. Steen’s overland was badly wrecked last Sunday evening when he was forced into a trip auto accident due to high roadside weeds obstructing the view of drivers at the corner on their way to Cherokee.
95 Years Ago -1929
The golden jubilee of the Trinity Lutheran Church was celebrated Sunday, July 28 by the Trinity pastor and congregation. Six hundred people attended the three thanksgiving services wich were held in the morning, afternoon and evening.
Ivan Addy suffered painful bruises Tuesday as a result of a rather unusual accident. As he was unloading grain the rod on the elevator became loose and kept striking him as the wheel went around. Mr. Addy who was operating the tractor received the full force of the blows from the rod several times before he was able to get the motor shut off. No bones were broken bu he suffered a great amount of pain and is obligated to remain in bed for several days.
The barn on the J.F. Collins farm in Tilden township burned down on Wednesday.
About 54 blocks in Marcus have been graveled under the subscription plan. The work was completed Monday.
85 Years Ago -1939
Mr. & Mrs. Lovell Simons returned home Tuesday morning from a trip to the east. Their tour included Washington D.C. Niagara Falls, New York World’s Fair and they also attended the World’s Poultry Show at Cleveland, Ohio.
Simonsen Brothers big Quimby plant for processing soybeans and flax seed began operating Thursday and is operating day and night, seven days per week.
The hail storm hit a small strip about three miles northwest of Marcus Thursday doing considerable damage to corn in that section. The farm affected were the following: Wayne Barnes, Peter Miller, Kay Barnes, Ralph McConnell, Henning Nestor, C.D. McInire, Mrs. Dorothea Miller and Dick Ames.
80 Years Ago – 1944
Henry Franks, 63 and father of eleven children, died July 22 following a brief illness and hospitalization. His death was attributed to a ruptured ulcer.
A recent graduate of Iowa State College is Miss Anne Pedersen, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. C.M. Pedersem; Miss Pedersen majored in Dieletics.
Fred Collin, 88, passed away in Sioux City at a hospital Tuesday, July 25 following a short illness. He is a former resident of Marcus having lived here for 68 years.
Elmer Gowan will take possession on September 1 of the Implement and Repair Service Shop formerly owned and operated by W.J. French at Cleghorn.
Mr.& Mrs. Louis Pingle were pleasantly surprised Sunday, July 30 when a number of relatives and friends gathered at their home to honor them on their 25th wedding anniversary.
75 Years Ago -1949
A dispatch from Washington says eighteen towns in the Eighth Congressional district in Iowa have been listed by the Public Building Administration as eligible for a new post office. One of the eighteen towns Marcus.
Funeral service were held Wednesday afternoon for Harold Anderson, son of Carl Anderson of Marcus.
The board of directors of the Marcus public school have completed preliminary arrangements for participating in the federal hot lunch program, and will have the program set up for the start of the school year.
New legislation which prohibits unlicensed drivers from operating farm tractors on the highways became effective this week. The 1949 legislative passed a law which forbids anyone who does not have an auto license to operate a tractor on a highway except from the home farm building to adjacent or nearby fields.
W.W. Bass, prominent livestock buyer and well know throughout this area, was elected president of the Marcus Fair association at the first meeting of the board of directors held Wednesday evening.
70 Years Ago -1954
James Roberson was born in Marcus, Iowa January 27 and departed this life on Wednesday, July 28 after being ill for several months.
The members of the Marcus band participated in the Centennial Parade at Sioux City Saturday morning July 31.
Darrell Johnson, a Marcus high School graduate, has been awarded an $84 scholarship to the University of South Dakota.
A group of friends and relatives honored Mr. & Mrs. Delmar Drefke at a surprise party on their 20th wedding anniversary Sunday evening in their home.
Don Schmillen received an injured eye in an unusual accident Sunday morning while mowing his lawn. His rotary mower threw a stone against a steel clothesline pole. The rock bounced directly back. The rock bounced directly back, breaking his glasses and cutting his severely above the eye.
65 Years Ago -1959
Mrs. Maud Booth was honored on her 80th birthday Saturday afternoon July 5 with a party in her home.
Mr. & Mrs. Bob Seggerman became the parents of a baby girl Wednesday morning July 29.
Mrs. Phyllis Goodrich and her daughter Shirley were badly shaken up and received some bruised and lacerations Sunday evening when the Chevrolet Shirley was driving upset in a ditch a mile southwest of Cleghorn landing on its top. Miss Goodrich was blinded by dust from a passing car and lost control on the gravel.
The Marcus Fire Department was called to the Eldon Hansen farm a mile east of town Thursday noon to put out a fire that had broken out in a pile of corn husks. No damage was done.
Louis Bengstron of Cherokee was re-elected as chairman of the Cherokee County ASC committee at the annual convention of township ASC delegates in Cherokee Saturday July 25.
60 Years Ago -1964
Miss Sharon Skaggs, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Vernon Skaggs of Cleghorn and Joyce Walker Baoles, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Floyd Walker of Marcus will graduate from the Methodist hospital school of nursing in Sioux City, Thursday evening July 30 at the Grace Methodist Church in Morningside.
Larry Gravenish, son of Mr. & Mrs. Cletus Gravenish who farm south of Marcus, is in Sacred Heart Hospital recovering from an injury received last Friday. Larry rode his horse to the pasture to bring in the cattle and it is believe he fell from the horse and received a concussion.
Mrs. Clara Garlow, 85 Wednesday July 29in Cherokee following a brief illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Leo Unkrur of Cleghorn announce the birth of a son born July 10.
Margaret Brady and Mrs. N.E. Peterson of Sioux City returned Sunday evening form a months visit with relatives in Denmark. Enroute home they also visited the New York World’s Fair.
55 Years Ago -1969
Mrs. Godfred Nelson, 75 and Marcus resident for many years, died Thursday, August 24 in Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
Mrs. Mabel Edmond, 88 of Marcus, died Wednesday 23 in Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee. Mrs. Edmonds had spent the preceding several months in a custodial home at Remsen.
Arthur Kinzel, 62 died Saturday in Park Rapids, Minnesota after a month’s illness. He had lived the past three years in Park Rapids. Prior to that he farmed in the Cleghorn area.
Mr. & Mrs. Durward Rieper of Cleghorn are the parents of a son born Wednesday, July 9.
This community, along with the rest of Iowa, has been entertaining a weird invasion of army worms. The inch long caterpillars are turning up all over, in fields, lawns, gardens and even on buildings.
50 Years Ago -1974
Fred Ducommun, president of the Cleghorn State Bank, announced this week that the bank has
been sold to E. Goodenow of Wall Lake and W.A. Krause of Hampton.
Mr. & Mrs. Gary Husman of Misawa. Japan are the proud parents of a son born on July 5th.
Robb Horstman of Marcus is one of 20 high school students currently participating in an Environmental Biology Workshop at Mount Marty College in Yankton, SD.
As a part of reorganization of Mid-Sioux Opportunity Inc., the Board of Directors of that firm has appointed Pat Kass of Remsen to be the Deputy Director of the Agency.
