110 Years Ago – 1914
The Remsen and Marcus baseball teams will cross bats on the Marcus diamond on Decoration Day. They will play for a prize of $50.
Four young ladies, Mamie Fenton, Myrtle Willey, Marie Walsh, Edna Healy will graduate from Loretta Academy this year.
The Marcus Cooperative Company let the contract for the erection of its stone building to the cement Products Company of Marcus and it is expected that work on the structure will begin at once.
Joseph Keffeler is erecting a circular bar on the farm about five miles west of Marcus.
105 Years Ago -1919
Phil Schmitt has sold his one half interest in Mack’s Cafe to his partner Stanley Smith who will continue to run the business alone. Phil is accustomed to being in the open and likes the outside life the better.
Mrs. Anna Rae passed away Sunday morning at her home in Marcus at the advanced age of 84 years.
Rea and George Peters had misfortune to sustain injuries to both their hands while handling a radiator last Saturday. They lost control of it and crushed their fingers quite badly. George had a tip of a finger taken off.
James French residing south of Marcus recently installed in his home an air pressure tank for the water system in the house. Either the tank was faulty or the gauge failed to record the real amount of pressure. Tuesday his engine was pumping air into the tank, which is in the basement. The gauge said 67 pounds. Mr. French was about to shut off the engine when the tank burst raising the floor above about two feet, knocking the partitions out and broke all if the window panes. He estimates the damage at about $300.
100 Years Ago – 1924
The proceeds for the sale of poppies on Poppy Day were 94.73 which will be used for welfare and hospital work among World War veterans.
Following the party which the Auxiliary and Legions members gave in honor of Mr. & Mrs. Walter Meyer Monday evening the committee took the remainder of the refreshments to the men who were counting votes and gave them a real treat.
Miss Geraldine Geibe celebrated her birthday Sunday with a fish fry near the Little Sioux.
Miss Vera Sand who has graduated as a nurse from a Chicago hospital is spending three weeks with her home folks.
95 Years Ago -1929
The Marcus high school auditorium housed a large audience Wednesday and Thursday evening when the seniors presented their class play “The Charm School.”
Marcus Merchants baseball team lost to the Granville aggregation Sunday by a score of 9 to 8. Snyder was on the mound for Marcus.
Roland Satterlee of Ireton is working the Satterlee Drug Store whole Mr. & Mrs. W.J. Satterlee are enjoying a vacation in Fort Pierce, SD.
Closing exercises for Holy Name School will be held Monday night June 3 in Holy Name Hall. Twelve seniors will be graduated following the exercises.
Tom Knox set out Tuesday morning on a hike across country to Washington DC. This is the second time he has made the trip by foot making it the first time last summer.
85 Years Ago -1939
The annual flower show of the Marcus Garden Club will be held Saturday, June 10 at the American Legion Hall. The contest is open to all amateur growers.
Homer Weimer ha sthe largest corn so far reported on Decoration Day this year of any other year. He reports sweet corn 30 inches in height by measurement, but no roasting ears as yet.
Earl Mayer was announced Valedictorian with an average grade of 94.47 Friday night at the commencement exercises. Doris Nelson was named salutatorian with an average grade of 92.43.
JF Collins and daughter Margaret, drove to Vinton Friday where they were joined by Marion Collins, who has been teaching in the public schools there the past year and then drove on up into Wisconsin by way of Dubuque crossing the Mississippi at Prairie Du Chein.
Fire was uncertain origin destroyed a barn 64 x 70 with 26 foot posts on the George Rosch farm about five miles south and two east of Marcus Saturday at about 5:45. The $4,000 barn was partially covered by insurance.
80 Years Ago – 1944
Funeral services for Rasmus Juhl, 83 were held in Nazareth Lutheran Church conducted by the pastor, Rev. John Christensen on Saturday, May 27.
Graveside services were held at Holy Name Cemetery Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. for Joan Patricia Carey, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Mark Carey.
From a field of two hundred and fifty groups, Duane Faul with his class, built the first prize radio transmitter of the month at Truax Field.
Mr. & Mrs. Don Connis are the parents of a son born on May 24.
Friday and Saturday specials at Straub’s Store were Bran Flakes, 15 oz 9 cents, dates 4 oz 19 cents, sugar 5 lbs 33 cents and pop 6 bottles 25 cents.
75 Years Ago -1949
The information of partnership in the practice of medicine in Marcus has been announced, Fr. M.D. Hayden, a native of Humbolt, has become a partner of Dr. M.F. Joynt, a Marcus physician and surgeon for many years.
The Poppy Day sale in Marcus Saturday proved to be highly successful with $161.61 gathered by the workers.
Richard Pallesen, son of Mr. & Mrs. Nels Pallesen and Roger Augustine, son of Mr. & Mrs. Joe Augustine, will attend Boy’s State this year, the trips being gifts of the American Legion post and the Commercial Club.
70 Years Ago -1954
Funeral Services of J.C. Stowater, 53, were held Saturday afternoon, May 29 at Trinity Lutheran Church.
The construction of the new Masonic Temple in Marcus has begun to move along at a rapid rate. The I-beams for the floor have been installed and the floor hoists laid.
Gordon Rapp and Tom Sleezer have moved a drive-in lunch and soft drink stand to the Addy lots formerly occupied by the Hipple Dairyette,
Scoutmaster Boots completing plans for a Canadian fishing trip. The boys will be accompanied by about 15 men and will take off Saturday night June 1 for the Black Duck country. They will return the following Saturday.

The Rev. and Mrs. C.W. Samuelson were honored on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary.
Michael Treinen, who graduated from the public high school this spring, won two radios as a prize in a nation-wide contest conducted by Radio Free Europe.
Robert Treinen, 41 of Sioux City, died Tuesday morning at Sioux City following a heart attack.Mr. Treinen was a former Marcus resident and operated the Treinen Music Company at the time of his death.
Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Dorr celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary Sunday, May 24 with an open house at their home in Marcus.
60 Years Ago -1964
Mrs. Joseph Kramer, 73 of Marcus died Sunday evening at a LeMars hospital following a long illness.
Robert McClintock of Marcus will be ordained a priest for the Diocese of Sioux City on Saturday, May 30 at 9:00 am in the Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City.
George Treinen, 79, passed away Saturday, May 23 at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Mr. & Mrs. David Galles of Sioux City are parents of a daughter born Sunday, May 17 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Sioux City.
Shirley Marie Carlson, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Carlson of Cleghorn will receive her Bachelor of Science degree from Loretto Heights College, Denver on Thursday, May 28. Shirley is a nursing major
55 Years Ago -1969
Arthur I Birch, 88 and a 50 year former resident of both the Marcus and Cherokee areas died Monday afternoon in Lynwood, California following a ten month illness.
Karen Fischer was named to the Dean’s List for the last quarter at ISU in Ames with a 4.00 grade average.
Mr. & Mrs. Wilfred Goth are the parents of a son born Monday, May 26, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
David Mayer and Robert Dorr will represent this community at Boys State this year. The event will be June 1 through 7 at Camp Dodge. David is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Carl Mayer and Robert is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Craig Dorr.
More than a dozen longtime livestock truckers were honored at the 26th annual Farm to Market Truckers Day at the Sioux City auditorium last Friday. Each received special recognition at the noon luncheon and received an engraved plaque in recognition of long service. Among them was Cy Brownmiller of Marcus.
50 Years Ago -1974
David Brady was among the seventeen 1974 high school graduates who have been granted Briar Cliff College Academic Recognition awards valued at $1200 for four years. David is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Phillip Brady of Marcus.
Mr. & Mrs. Quentin Reifenrath are parents of a baby daughter born May 6 in Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
Clare W. Green, 82 passed away Monday, May 27 at SVMH in Cherokee following a one year illness.
Miss Salley Jenness, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Merritt Jenness, earned twp pf the top awards presented at awards night on May 22 at the high school gym. She was presented the Iowa Bar Association Citizenship Award and the DAR Citizenship award.
The Marcus Garden Club will hold their 40th annual June Flower Show on Friday, June 7 in the Municipal Building. The year’s theme is “Showers of Flowers.”
45 Years Ago – 1979
Mr. and Mrs. George Brown of Des Moines will celebrate their 50th their 50th wedding anniversary on Sun., June 3.
Mr. and Mrs. Rocky Fontana of Minneapolis are proud to announce the arrival of their first child, a girl born May 27 at Metropolitan Medical Center in Minneapolis.
Linda Hanson, a sophomore pre-veterinarian medicine major received the David Henry Memorial Scholarship at South Dakota State University College of Agriculture for the 1979-80 academic year.
Mr. & Mrs. Loren Corrington at 614 W Cedar, Cherokee, will be celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary on June 6.
