Joint Board Approves Proposed Budget
The Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn Community School District Board of Directors met in regular joint session on Monday, April 15, 2024 at 6:30pm in the Remsen-Union Media Room, along with the Remsen-Union Community School District Board of Directors. Board members present: Laura Staab, Kristi Letsche, Luke Olson, Dan Erickson and Belinda Leavitt.
A public hearing for the Remsen Union proposed fiscal year 2025 budget was opened with no comments made.
Middle School nurse Traci Miller, commented to the boards on her own behalf about wages during public forum. Board members made no decisions.
Strange, late winter weather caused officials to cancel several days of school. Mostly severe cold caused enough loss of school days for students that make up days/change in scheduling was required. Belinda Leavitt moved to approve a school calendar change. The last day of school will be moved up to Friday, May 24, 2024 for students and paraprofessionals. The last day for teaching staff will be May 28, 2024. Luke Olson seconded. The schedule change passed unanimously.
Cherokee Sheriff Derek Scott, Marcus Police Chief Brian Flikeid, and 911 Coordinator Stuart Hogg shared information about the Emergency Radio System and how it works when triggered.
The resignations of three paraprofessionals were accepted by the board: Carla Weber, Courtney DeMey, and Deb Mayer and Janice Husman, bus driver. Hiring Alyssa Kenney as a Paraprofessional was approved.
Fees for the 2024-25 school year unanimously were kept the same.
The proposed FY25 budget was unanimously approved by the MMC Board.
The board set a public hearing to amend the current fiscal year budget for Monday May 20 in Marcus.
A sharing agreement with Cherokee Washington High School for bowling was dropped. A new sharing agreement with Gehlen Catholic High School in LeMars replaces it. The change passed unanimously.
Contract negotiations were done in exempt session, a form of public meetings that is legally closed but falls outside most public meeting standards. Administrative contracts were tabled until classified and certified contracts reach agreement.
