110 Years Ago – 1914
The annual meeting of the Marcus Co-op Company, attended by about 60, was held last Saturday afternoon in the Idle Hour theater, The following officers were elected: H.J. Raun, president; C.V. Peters, L.W. Barnes, Adam Grauer, and C.R. McConnel, directors.
Thomas Walsh of Wheaton, Minnesota recently purchased the Mrs. Ann Walsh property and will return to Marcus to make his home.
Mrs. M. Collins and Jennie Collins were in Sioux City Wednesday night to witness “Ben Hur”
Mrs. C.P. Dorr submitted to an operation for goiter at Iowa City Hospital last Sunday and it is indicated that she is getting along fine.
Ray Peters had some bad luck last Monday when e broke his left wrist. He is out of commission as far as the work in the garage is concerned.
100 Years Ago – 1924
Charles Johnson passed away Saturday evening at his home in Hotel Marcus following an illness of pneumonia.
Ilda Porter will soon commence her duties at the Smart Shop.
Mrs. Walter Miller and her brother, Mr. Puhrmann of near Granville, left Saturday morning for Wynot, NE where they went to attend the funeral of a nephew.
Dr. M.F. Joynt and Dr. T.C. Knox attended a medical meeting at Cherokee last evening.
The community was shocked this morning by the death of William Falherty. Mr. Flaherty had been in good health and had been in his place of business every day, but Thursday morning death struck him suddenly.
95 Years Ago -1929
Robert Garlinghouse sustained a deep gash in the instep as the result of striking his foot with an ax.
Mr. & Mrs. James Cronin are moving this week from LeMars and will make their home on a farm north of Marcus.
A group a friends surprised Mr. & Mrs. Frank Hucket Wednesday evening when they gathered in their home to give them a farewell party.
Ed Glines has rented the building adjoining his shop and will use it as a shoe shining parlor.
Arthur Kirchoff left recently for Phoenix, AZ in his new Ford roadster.
85 Years Ago -1939
Lawrence Slagter and Betty Pedersen will represent the public school respectively in the spelling contest in Cherokee.
Fern Kramer, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Joe Kramer and Charles Addy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Addy, were united in marriage Monday morning in the rectory of the Holy Name Church.
The Cleghorn girls’ basketball team won the sectional title at Meriden by defeating the Meriden girls in the final game 28-24.
Work is expected to start Monday on the WPA project which will remove dirt from the Weimer crossing and transfer it to the playground.
Leo Wagner attended the grocers’ wholesale convention in Des Moines from Monday to Wednesday of this week.
Death came Sunday morning to Mrs. Ed Douvia after a lingering illness of two and half years.
The wave of influenza and other communicable diseases which has been sweeping over the state has hit Cherokee County School heads from the various towns report that from 10 to 30 percent of the pupils are not in attendance.
80 Years Ago – 1944
Cpl. Leo Franks of Camp Maxey, Texas, was transferred to Shreveport, LA on maneuvers.
Mrs. George Tutt local chairman for the Red Cross, has awarded pins to six more women for having devoted 150 hours of service to Red Cross work.
Lt. Otto Wittkop has completed his training at Randolph Field, Texas, and is to be assigned as instruction at Ellinton Field, Texas.
Mrs. Don Tentinger has gone to New York to join her husband who is stationed there.
Clarence Dorr is announcing through the Marcus News his intention to discontinue the coal hauling business. He will handle only freight and express from the I.C. depot and the delivery of freight to the Marcus, Cleghorn, Remsen and Meriden vicinity.
75 Years Ago -1949
Edwin Anderson, 56, of near Maryhill, and resident of the Marcus community for many years, passed away suddenly in Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
Mr. & Mrs. W.W. Bass and their daughter, Mrs. Leland Hogue of LeMars, returned Thursday evening from a four week trip to California and other points of interest.
Mrs. Revina Williams of Primghar and formerly of Marcus bought the Claus Schroeder residence here at the auction last Saturday. Mrs. Williams plans to move to Marcus after disposing of her home at Primghar.
J.F. Collins returned to his home Sunday night from a six week trip to Los Angeles, where he visited his children, Mrs. Robert Bowman, James Collins Jr., and Berlyn Collins.
Louis Jorgensen has accepted the management of the plumbing department of the Nielsen Electric Shop here. They plan an extended service in the heat and plumbing line.
70 Years Ago -1954
Mrs. Marion Bird, 40, passed away early Wednesday morning at Sacred Heart in LeMars after an extended illness.
Max Rasmussen, a former Marcus boy, was a guest and speaker at Tuesday’s noon’s Rotary Club meeting.
Forrest Booths have moved to the Witt farm northwest of Marcus and the Geroge Wilson family have moved into the house vacated by the Booths.
65 Years Ago -1959
Eighty women from this community made a bus excursion to Fort Dodge last Wednesday, where they visited the Felco feed mill and its auxiliary installations.
Rex Dory, superintendent of the Marcus Public schools, was elected president of the Marcus Rotary Club at a meeting of the newly elected board of directors.
Mrs. John Bentz returned Monday from Sacred Heart Hospital at LeMars. What was feared to have been a light heart attack proved to be a severely stained shoulder muscle.
Mrs. W.L. Gund returned Sunday from a three-week trip to Bermuda. She made the trip in company with Mrs. R.J. Koehler of LeMars.
60 Years Ago -1964
The Fire Department was called Monday morning to the Cy Brownmiller home in Marcus, where an extremely dangerous fire was extinguished.
Janet Lehnhoff of the community high school won second place in the Northwest Iowa “Voice of America” contest.
George Johnson, 83, one of the early Marcus businessmen, passed away at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
55 Years Ago -1969
Diane Stodden has been selected as the finalist for the State Farm Bureau Scholarship from Cherokee County.
Bus Jenness returned Friday from a 12 day fishing trip to Ft. Pierce and West Palm Beach Florida.
Joseph Garvin, 95, former resident of this community passed away in a hospital near his home in Wolfboro, New Hampshire.
Dennis Gray, son of Mr. & Mrs. Don Gray of Marcus, earned a perfect 4.0 grade average at Morningside College.
50 Years Ago -1974
Mel Lenox placed sixth at the state wrestling meet last Friday.
Mrs. Harry Sholly of Marcus passed away at the age of 73 in a Sioux City Hospital after a short illness.
Jim Alesch proudly accepts the plaque presented to him by Bob Brady at the conclusion of the broom handle jumping contest.
Edward Meylor, 72, passed away Tuesday at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars following a lingering illness.
45 Years Ago – 1979
Corey Kass, son of Mr. & Mrs. Ron Kass of Marcus, was baptized in a gown that has been worn by the first born of four generations.
Wrestling cheerleaders for Marcus are Margie Pick, Wendy Briggs, Cindy Carnes, Deb Heeren, Brenda Carver and Jean Olson.
40 Years Ago –1984
The Marcus Woman’s club has received the go ahead from MEDCO to develop a mini park on the vacant lot where the Dick Petersen building was.
Kay Carney and Rose Gabel were members of the 1984 Westmar College Biology interim trip to Arizona and California. The group traveled through eleven states and 5,000 miles.
