Iowa State University Extension and Outreach to host Farm Succession Workshop Feb. 15 and 22 in Holstein
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach of Buena Vista, Cherokee and Ida Counties will host a two-day farm succession workshop on Feb. 15 and Feb. 22 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Cobblestone Inn and Suites in Holstein.
The workshop is designed to provide an overview of farm estate planning, including legal and realistic guidance for creating your own unique farm succession plan. It will be led by ISU Extension and Outreach Farm Management Specialist and Certified Farm Transition Coordinator Alexis Stevens and ISU Center for Agricultural Law and Taxation Staff Attorney Jennifer Harrington.
“Every farm will have a unique estate plan,” Stevens said. “Changes in the farm can be stressful. You will leave this workshop with tools and resources to make informed decisions that are right for your family and farm.”
Topics include estate planning, setting goals, implementing your plan, gift and estate taxes, and having the succession conversation with your family. The workshop will provide resources that the participants can use for future planning.
“Many families struggle with succession plans,” Stevens said. “Families say they don’t know how to start talking about farm estate planning. We ask them, ‘What do you have now?’ and ‘Where do you want to go?’ to get them started.”
Registration fee for the program is $20 per person or $30 per couple. Refreshments will be provided, and space is limited so registration is required.
To register or ask questions, call the Ida County Extension Office at 712-364-3003, the Cherokee County Extension Office at 712-225-6196 or the Buena Vista County Extension Office at 712-732-5056. Registration deadline is Feb. 10.
