This past week, Little Butterball (Teddy) has been a costly kitten/cat. After taking my hearing aid out of the charger, I looked 4 hours for it until 6 a.m., and went to back to bed mentally exhausted. At 8 a.m. I was returning from the bathroom and saw something laying on the floor between the bed and wall. I almost stepped on part of it that was laying where I had more than done Fall house cleaning. I did feel better knowing that at least part of it was still here. Checking with house insurance, I found no help as the hearing aid wasn’t listed in the policy. Check with the hearing specialist where the aid came from and found I got by cheap—$200. The most expensive part was what goes over the ear that was saved. The other part was one of several that as not under warranty. I asked her if I should call the Vet and see if the kitten was in danger. She said that the part that was missing was plastic and had no batteries, etc. in it. I did not call the Vet and haven’t found anymore so I think it did chew up the plastic.
She gave me a ‘loaner’ aid and as I put it in the charger that I put way down in a square Puff’s tissue box, the kitten was there again. I picked up the box and took it downstairs. I opened up a cupboard door, moved the Cocoa can, and put the charger and aid in the cupboard behind closed door. There is a very small light on the aid when charging (about the size of a pin head) that is attracting the kitten. I certainly don’t want to have to pay for another aid!
I found out that a the day after Thanksgiving, I will be done going to therapy at Le Mars. Things still aren’t what they were before my accident, but it might be something I will have to live with. Anytime two arms are needed, that is when my left one still can’t help much. I went to hammer a nail in the wall the other day and found that I couldn’t hold the nail with my left hand while the right hand held the hammer. I have come a long ways since going to therapy over 20 times but still have some ways to go. Zachary did come to my aid and nailed the oxygen line up on the wall to keep it out of Teddy’s grasp. Although he’s a very good jumper, I hope Teddy isn’t able to get to this line. Wish me luck!
I was able to get the speaker, Sky ‘Harms’ Casson’s speech. I got it after it reached the school office but was too late for printing in that week’s paper. I thank her for letting me have it for publication.
The City of Marcus hired a part-time police officer that lives in Alta. He is a Security Guard for HyVee warehouse and is off at 4 p.m. His hours there haven’t been the greatest so he will pick up extra as a part-time officer.
We went down to the former Boy Scout room in the basement after the meeting and saw Officer Stephans and her K9 dog, Vulcan, find drugs that were hidden there. The drugs were found and after seeing how this dog works, I really wouldn’t want it to be after me!
There are FREE gun locks at City Hall that Police Chief Flikeid was able get through Project Safe Child. Stop by and get one for your guns so that they cannot be accessed by children or other unauthorized persons. It is a safety lock that could save a child’s life. Children are curious and an unlocked place storing guns could be their life if they went to get the gun.
Faith Lutheran Church has a Thanksgiving service on Wednesday evening. After that, the holiday season is up and running! Trees will be decorated at the Marcus Community Center for Hometown Christmas that is Saturday, Dec. 9. As usual there are several places that are offering food so you don’t have to cook. Cleghorn and Quimby have had their turkey take-outs already.
June Pallesen and I are giving the program for Faith Lutheran’s Ladies Aid on December 7 following a catered meal by Deb Puhrmann.
This year for the first time in more than 5 years, Faith Lutheran has a Christmas Eve service at 5 p.m. on Dec. 24. We share a minister with Remsen and during these years, Marcus had a 3 o’clock service. None of my family could come at that time and it would have been a challenge entertaining for 2 hours waiting for a supper when little kids are present. Now we have the 5 o’clock time and hopefully those that couldn’t come in the earlier years will come now.
The Christmas Eve service was always special to our family. Floyd’s birthday was that day. Cameron was baptized at the Christmas Eve service when he was 2 months old. Looking back in the church records, Steve found a mistake—it was recorded that Cameron was baptized two days (in October) before he was even born! I don’t remember if these baptismal records were sent in but if they were and he had to have this for identification, there would be a problem!
Turn back history pages and remember the times you as a kid attended this service. There were pews lit with candles and one time, the older kid sitting in front of us, fell asleep and leaned into the holder holding up the candle, but woke up in time to leave the candle in place. If your church isn’t having a Christmas Eve service or if you aren’t affiliated with any church, Faith Lutheran invites you to this 5 p.m. service on Dec. 24. This was the service that Fred and Bonnie Wilkens always came to until they went to the nursing home. I am looking forward to finally having this service.
December shopping starts on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving Day. Things are marked down and in order to participate in the sales, you have to be there early. When Walmart was in its first place, there was a bigger television offered on Black Friday. Zachary wanted it but refused to stand in line in the early morning hours. In fact, he parked quite a ways away from the line. As soon as the doors opened, in the people went to where they already knew what they wanted. Out came a man carrying the large television. Zachary finally went in when the crowd was inside. When he came out just minutes later, he said that there had been only one of these televisions for sale! (The ad had said “s” on the end of this television—so there was some false advertising at this time!)
I remember when Younker’s had their big sales. Women would drag their husbands along basically to watch a kid or two while they went bargain hunting. An expensive dish was knocked off a shelf (that I was standing close to) by a kid not being watched by his dad. I got away from there real quick. I don’t know if the dad was charged for the dish, but if so, he didn’t get away from that area in a hurry like he should have!
I don’t like to predict but here goes. In short time there will be no use for a Barbie doll as girls are only concerned about a phone to play games on—no matter what age. Little boys are the same way—trucks will not be their favorite toy as long as a phone and a game is available. Times have changed and imagination has gone down the drain. Cutting holes in a box and using it as a barn or garage, is no more. The modern parent makes sure the kid has a game to play and that way will be no bother. Go to a school musical and you will find younger kids playing games rather than being interested in what is going on upfront. That is the way the child isn’t bothering anyone. Yes, I might have come over on the Mayflower, but I still think imagination is necessary.
Did you know that the Twin Bing is celebrating 100 years at Palmer Candy Company? Now they are offering other flavors other than cherry.
I hope you had a great Thanksgiving Day no matter how you celebrated!
Remember in your thoughts and prayers those who have lost loved ones to death, have had their lives changed, have health problems some of which are terminal, are struggling to make ends meet even though they have a job; help those who desire “wants” are more important than “needs” that prestige isn’t everything and be with those who are still struggling to shorten the distance between family/friends to build a bridge instead of a wall. Count your blessings!
