120 Years Ago -1903
Thomas Delaney will occupy the new store rooms in the new bank building. He will have the finest store in the city.
Dr. Loomis will occupy the suite of rooms on the west side of the new bank. Roy Lohan will occupy a corner of the basement with his barbershop.
115 Years Ago – 1908
Illinois Central has the Flyer going west at 6:42 in the morning and goes east at 7:05 in the evening. A Sioux City Accommodation runs between Fort Dodge and Sioux City. It arrives from the east at 9:23 am. and returns at 6:15 in the evening.
Charles E. Freeman will be the new owner of the Marcus News due to Mrs. Lewis’ health.
110 Years Ago – 1913
Joe Hey completed a deal and purchased the Alex Miller home in the west part of Marcus – He will get possession February 1 -He paid $1,850. Joe has been a steady worker in the Seeger Harness Shop for several years.
Thirteen pickers are at work in Sjostrom Bros. poultry house. Feathers are flying fast. About 1100 chickens are picked each day with each picker averaging 80 – the fastest one does 100 per day. The city of Marcus will celebrate the completion of the electric system with a banquet on December 2.
John Murphy, a farmer near Aurelia, raised over $2,000 worth of “Murphy” potatoes this year.
Farmers are receiving 60¢ a bushel for new corn delivered at Marcus.
105 Years Ago -1918
Cherokee is again under strict quarantine. Following the peace day celebration, influenza has broken out again. Schools and all public places are closed.
The Henry Niemann Hardware store has been closed several days on account of Mrs. Niemann’s illness.
Pvt. Roy D. Jones of the 168th Infantry wrote a letter to his friends describing how he captured 12 Huns.
100 Years Ago – 1923
Peters Bros. are displaying a new model Ford, a two door coach. It is very attractive and the price f.o.b. Detroit is $500.
Horace Armbruster has returned from DeSmit, South Dakota. He has been helping Ray Meylor in the panatorium there which he and Ray purchased. Ray will run the place.
95 Years Ago -1928
Every one of the 65 voters of Oyens turned out to vote.
O.J. Carlson has rented the building formerly occupied by the Community Oil Company and has equipped it for a lunch room.
The Marcus football team won the Cherokee County Class B championship for the third year in a row.
AW. Fuller has been appointed mayor of Meriden to succeed Albert Hurd.
to the home of Chelsea Metcalf on Tuesday and left a little daughter.
Farmers are receiving 6O~ a bushel for new corn delivered at Marcus.
85 Years Ago -1938
Mr. and Mrs. L.P. Fitzgerald returned from their wedding trip to Chicago and are living in an apartment in the Earl Flanagan residence.
Mrs. Hillis Carris attended the 60th wedding anniversary of her parents. Mr. & Mrs. Andrew Kinzel at Cleghorn.
80 Years Ago – 1943
Grace Roberts and Pfc. Donald R. Conner were united in marriage at Ogden, Utah, October 5. Grace is a graduate of Marcus High School and Donald’s home was in Corning, New York. He is now in England –
“Hobgoblin House”, the Cleghorn junior class play, will be held November 23.
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Miller of Marcus are the parents of a son born November 16. Mrs. Miller’s mother, Mrs. B.L. Datisman of Inwood, is spending several days with them.
Dean Barnes S1/c is spending some time with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Vein Barnes, enroute from Keyport, Washington, to New London, Connecticut.
75 Years Ago -1948
John Williams of Cherokee and Irwin Anderson, near Marcus, have purchased the East Side Tavern at Marcus. John is a former Marcus resident.
Clarence Beck attended the Iowa Association of Mutual Insurance conference for three days at Des Moines. He also visited with son Claire, a student at Drake University.
Residents of Ogden, Iowa, were treated to the sight of a 1902 Sears Motor Buggy, forerunner of the automobile. The two-cylinder vehicle, built along the lines of a horse drawn buggy, costs $500 and has traveled 100,000 miles.
The Marcus Fair organization held a meeting to incorporate the annual fair. The purchase of the J.C. Means property was discussed.
70 Years Ago -1953
Lt. Allen Grauer graduated from the Basic Single Engine Jet Pilot training school at Foster Air Base, Texas, on November 2. He is a graduate of Marcus High School – Class of 1948.
Holy Name Wildcats avenged an earlier defeat to beat Danbury 57-46 with Paul Keffeler scoring 21 points and Jerry Galles, 18.
Marcus Eagles defeated Kingsley 50-41 with John Neir scoring 14 points and Duane Bork, 13.
Dr. and Mrs. M.F. Joynt plan to attend the Iowa – Notre Dame football game at South Bend, Indiana, this weekend.
65 Years Ago -1958
Boots, the blacksmith, Wallin” will now be called Judge Elmore Wallin as he has been appointed Justice of the Peace for Marcus by the Cherokee County Board of Supervisors.
The Holy Name Civics Club of Marcus volunteered to assist Mary Ellen Kelly, Marcus invalid, in getting her bi-monthly paper, “Seconds Sanctified” prepared for mailing.
The Marcus Commercial Club will offer $50 and $25 in Marcus Bucks and 25 turkeys at Saturday evenings drawing.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Husman are the parents of a son born November 13.
The freshmen girls at public school are working on breakfasts in Home Ed and the sophomores are sewing.
60 Years Ago -1963
Thirty-seven young foreigners, students from a number of area colleges, will be guests of the Marcus community this weekend.
Sandra Dorr, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Dorr of Marcus, was one of 121 sophomores in the college of nursing at the State University of Iowa, to receive her nurses cap in the traditional candlelight ceremony on November 3.
Marcus housewives are invited to an IPS. Home Lighting Demonstration Thursday, November 21, in the Marcus High school.
Carol Joyce Petersen of Marcus and Robert Kriege of Remsen were married Saturday, November 2, in the St. Mary’s rectory. They will make their home at Remsen.
55 Years Ago -1968
The estates of Ed S. Hinspeter and Pearl Hinspeter will sell 120 acres of land one mile west of Marcus and 240 acres northeast of Cleghorn at auction November 20.
Marcus Jaycees are sponsoring a barber shop harmony show in the local gym Saturday evening.
Henry J. Meyer, 69, long time Marcus resident died Thursday, November 7. He is survived by his widow, a daughter, three sons, three brothers and a sister.
50 Years Ago -1973
Jean Renee Einck of Primghar and Michael Lee Theisen of Marcus were united in marriage at St. Anthony’s Church at Primghar. They will make their home at Sioux City where both are employed.
Marcus Eagles finished their football season with an 8-1 record and tied Lawton-Bronson for the conference championship. The Eagles averaged 31.6 points per game to 9-4 points by this opposition.
Thirty-three young wrestlers reported for the Marcus wrestling team with three of them, Mike Olson, Mel Lenox and Jay Dixson, returning as state wrestlers.
Dennis Garvin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Merlin Garvin of Marcus, is a member of the 72 mixed voice chorus at Mount Marty College. They will present a Christmas concert on December 10.
45 Years Ago – 1978
Jerry Martin, Marcus coach, was named “Coach of the Year.’ Jerry is a 1957 graduate of Westmar College.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Knudson are the proud parents of a 9 lb. 2 1/2 oz. son, Matthew Joseph, born November 2. 1978.
The Meriden-Cleghorn senior class will present their class play “Grandma’s Best Years,” a comedy on Monday, November 20th.
Mrs. Floyd (Lauretta) Nagle was the final guest for the Special People class. She told of their endeavors in business here, grocery store, poultry buying station, a dance hall, a roller skating rink, a miniature golf course and the clothing store, which they still operate.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hueser are the proud parents of an 8 lb: 3 oz. son, Michael Thomas.
40 Years Ago –1983
Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Dorr of Marcus are the proud parents of an 8 lb. 13 1/2 oz. son, Michael Charles, born October 24. He has a brother and a sister.
The Cleghorn Lions Club voted to donate $100 to the Iowa Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation.
Coach Terry Horsley has five lettermen returning for the Marcus Eagles basketball team – fifteen other prospects also reported for action.
Mrs. Jean Caboth, Marcus art instructor, will exhibit her soft sculptures on display in the Marcus Public Library until November 23.
The Community Carolfest will be held December 11, 1983, in Holy Name Church.
35 Years Ago – 1988
Six former teachers gathered to mark the 45th anniversary of their joining the Marcus Public Schools faculty. They included Pauline Lindeman Lewman, Margaret Clark Dorr, Phyllis Klinzman Miller, Belly Simonsen, Eleanor Tostlebe Peterson and Alvera Rasmus Lewman.
The Meriden-Cleghorn-Marcus Parent/Student/Teacher Organization will meet Tuesday, November 22, in the Cleghorn Middle School. They will establish guidelines and plan the program for the first ‘Say No to Drugs’ program.
The Marcettes are sponsoring the noted “Master Hypnotist” Jim Wand in the Community Center at Marcus November 19.
The Iowa Farm-City Council will recognize National Farm -City Week November 18-24.
Gottfrid Polson, 94, former area resident died Friday, November 11th, at Cherokee. He is survived by one son and three daughters. Burial was in Marcus! Amherst cemetery.
30 Years Ago – 1993
Jim and Eleanor Dreckman of Marcus will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary at 5:30 p.m. Mass, Saturday, November 27th, and will bold an open house in the church hall following. Their twelve children and families will host the event.
Dora Krekow Wilkens, 86, of Marcus died Saturday, November 13, at LeMars. She is survived by nieces and nephews.
Georgia Ann Wiedemeier Waller, former Marcusite, is well known for her pottery and has been holding shows in many places.
American Legion Auxiliary Units are being asked to help with the Women in Military Service for America Memorial project (WIMSA). It will be built at Arlington National Cemetery.
Krista Sanow, who will graduate from MMC in May of 1994, sees herself teaching math and married ten years from now.
