120 Years Ago -1903
The weather has been just what the farmers needed to get the fall work done. The task of corn husking is nearly completed.
J.J. Jungers and family departed for Aurelia where he will take charge of the new hotel butte this past summer.
115 Years Ago – 1908
Frank Baum, the well known merchant of Baum, west of Cherokee, died at Des Moines following surgery.
T.R. Fenton sold his black smith building and lots at Cleghorn to Mr. Imboff of Radcliffe. He is a first class blacksmith and took possession November 1.
J.H. Knox departed for Primghar to manage the Thomas Patton lumber yard.
110 Years Ago – 1913
Twenty year old Max Cargin was laid to rest Saturday afternoon, November 22. He was killed November 19 in an auto accident which four other young men survived, Lyle Board, Gilbert Evans, James Hoxsie and Francis Cline. He was buried in Marcus/Amherst cemetery in a concrete vault – the only one of its kind in Marcus.
Young ladies attending a two day teacher’s institute at Cherokee included Susie Fobes, Burneta West, Minnie Petrie, Vera Fechter, Grace Nield, Emma Hobbs, Hazel Ames and others.
John Ritz and Margaret Loutsch, both of Remsen, were united in marriage November 18. Mr. Ritz conducts a blacksmith shop.
Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Snyder are the parents of a 9 lb. son born Tuesday morning, November 25.
Part of “The Courtship of Miles Standish” will be given by Marcus students in the Idle Hour Theatre. Harry Fechter will play Miles Standish, Lucille Twogood will be Priscilla and the part of John Alden will be played by Charles Meehan.
105 Years Ago -1918
The Marcus Board of Health decided to continue the influenza quarantine although the situation is improving.
Walter Chapman, an employee on the Charles Quinn family, passed away after a five day battle with influenza.
Frank C. Hamilton, junior editor of the Marcus News, passed away of influenza and pneumonia.
Ralph McConnell was discharged after serving six months in the U.S. Army with the 39th Coast Artillery.
100 Years Ago – 1923
Harmison, Marcus quarterback, and Hazen, center, were named to the all county football team.
Carl Peterson’s barn, nine horses and his 1923 crop of hogs were burned Sunday night.
Dr. C.W. Ihle is driving a new 1924 Model Oakland coupe.
Dave Cook, of near Remsen husked 180 bushels of corn in nine and one-half hours.
95 Years Ago -1928
The cast of the Junior M Club play, “The Youngest,” was chosen and they presented the play on November 23 and 24.
Cherokee County received a new allowance of 20,000 feet of snow fence and the engineer asked for another 10,000 feet.
Dave Smith departed for North Africa where he will work for the Standard Oil Company.
Early settler R.F. Luchterhandt will hold a closing out farm sale and will move in to Marcus.
85 Years Ago -1938
George McCandless, commercial leach at Marcus public school, died of injuries received when he cranked his automobile while it was in gear. It carried him 60 feet and crushed him against a garage.
Flames, starting on the second floor of the big store building at Fielding on Wednesday. November 23, completely destroyed the structure. Much of the stock and furniture on the first floor were removed.
Ben Radcliffe, star fullback of the Marcus High football team, received honorable mention in the annual roster of Iowa high school football starts as picked by Jack North of Des Moines.
80 Years Ago – 1943
Matt Geisler, 32, died of injuries suffered in a traffic injury, Monday. November 15. He is survived by his widow and three daughters. his mother, three brothers and two sisters.
Rev, and Mrs. Hoskins will begin their Pastor work November 28 in the Christian Church at Cleghorn November 28.
Margaret Rae, Charles Rosburg, Barbara Wallin and Sue Hogue gave oral book reports to their class at Marcus Public Junior High.
The Rebeccas honored Miss Libby Pitts at a farewell party. Fifteen ladies enjoyed playing “Wahoo” and socializing. Miss Pitts was presented a gift.
75 Years Ago -1948
Mrs. Jack Reynolds, 43, was laid to rest in Holy Name cemetery Tuesday, November 23. She is survived by her husband, four young children, her father and two brothers.
The draft board notified Vernon Jorgensen and Glen Cave, both of Marcus, and Otto Schneider, Arthur Olson and Lyle Curry of Cleghorn that they were placed in I-A.
Ed Keleher is installing a new furnace in the Ernest Stockman home at Granville.
Florence Anderson arrived home after working at Burley. Idaho, the past several months. Due to the severe snow storm in Nebraska, she was delayed several days.
W.J. Roethler will hold a Public Sale of livestock and farm machinery on the farm one mile east and one smile south of Marcus on Tuesday, November 30.
70 Years Ago -1953
Holy Name Mens Club and students gleaned 785 bushels of corn from various cornfields -they made nearly $1,000.
Kimber Variety here will hold a Grand Opening on Saturday. Kimber purchased the store from Gordon Rapp and Tom Sleezer.
Phyllis Burch and Peggy Sand will dance on the Kid’s Korner TV program Thursday. December 3.
Joan Wilberding started her new duties as a nurse in the Veteran’s Hospital at Omaha.
Chuck Beaton of A & M Tech began basketball practice this week with the Aggie Wheels-one of the few wheelchair basketball teams in the U.S.
65 Years Ago -1958
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Krekow are the parents of an 8 lb. 1/2 oz. daughter, Kay Arlene, born Tuesday. November 18.
Cleghorn High School vocal groups will appear on KTIV, Channel 4, Tuesday, December 1, at S pin.
Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Schmillen are the parents of a 7 lb. 6 oz. son. Kevin Eugene. born Friday, November 14.
Dakota, exchanged wedding vows on Saturday, November 8, at Custer. They will make their home at Sioux City where both are employed.
60 Years Ago -1963
Donald McQueen, 11 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank McQueen, was killed in a tractor accident. Donald’s twin brother passed away of leukemia four years ago.
Marcus Eagles lost their opening basketball game with a 59-46 loss to Kingsley. Dennis Peavey had 16 points for the Eagles.
Mrs. Selma Pearson’s four bedroom house and furniture will be sold at private sale – house will be open Saturday and Sunday -the house is two blocks west of the Marcus Oil and Supply Co.
Mrs. Harry Sholly moved into the home she purchased at 408 E. Spruce Street, from Mrs. George Engelke of Sutherland.
Mrs. Delbert Joslin, Kate Ernst, and Mrs. Ellen Ames visited in the Gladys and Lyda Willtarns home Friday afternoon.
55 Years Ago -1968
Donald and Duane Beaton of Phoenix, Arizona, arrived here due to the serious illness of their mother, Mrs. George Beaton.
Dennis Means, Dennis Pearson, Ed Schlenger and Gene Dorr went to Sioux City to the Iowa Employment Service to take a test Friday, November 15.
Teresa Kauffman was elected president of the Marcus Eagles Pep Club, Barb Anderson-vice president, and Laurie Treinen secretary -treasurer.
Marcus student council and Mr. Bies visited the Aurelia High school and attended classes with their student council members. Aurelia will visit Marcus later in the year.
50 Years Ago -1973
Warner Benson, 82, of Marcus passed away Sunday. lie is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.
Marcus Eaglettes lost their season opening basketball game to Hull-Western Christian 88-73. Diane Robeson scored 39 points.
Vera Zoch Prunty, 52. passed away November 7 after a linger -ing illness. She had attended school at Marcus and graduated from Meriden. She is survived by her husband, two sons, two daughters, and three brothers
45 Years Ago – 1978
Mike Bies of Marcus was one of five finalists for Lord Marben at Mount Marty College, Yankton, South Dakota. Homecoming.
Elmer Reinholdt will hold an auction on the farm eleven miles south and two and one-half west of Marcus on December 2, 1978.
Marcus Junior High had 100 percent attendance at Parent-Teacher Conferences and the K-6 had a 92 percent.
Mrs. Gary Booth and Shannon hosted a neighborhood coffee honoring Mrs. Ann Bork on her 82nd birthday.
Mrs. Margaret Meehan spent two week in Minneapolis, Minnesota, visiting Mr. and Mrs. Dennis George and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Meehan.
40 Years Ago –1983
Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Moats hosted a Friday party in their home on Saturday, November 19th, honoring their daughter, Kim, on her 18th birthday.
Twenty members of the Cleghorn Senior Citizens enjoyed a Thanksgiving Dinner last Thursday in the Four Leaf Clover at Cherokee. They spent the afternoon playing cards in the Cleghorn Shelterhouse.
The Marcus speech students will present “Pip Van Winkle” as a Reader’s theatre-a form of group oral interpretation.
35 Years Ago – 1988
Steve and Gwen Peters of Marcus are the proud parents of a 9 lb. 7 oz. baby girl, Emily Gwen, born Tuesday, November 15. She has a two year old brother, John.
Lori Melbie and Ray Means were married Saturday, November 5, in Holy Name Church at Marcus. They will make their home at Marcus.
30 Years Ago – 1993
Ronald E. Brown of The Marcus Police Department graduated from the 135th Basic Training Class, Iowa Law Enforcement Academy, Friday, November 19.
Kyle Schmillen and Danielle Waller are featured in the “Out the Door in ’94” column in the Eagle Express.
Susan Ellen Wibe, 79, of Marcus died Thursday, November 18, of an apparent heart attack in her home. She is survived by her husband, five sons, three brothers, and three sisters. Burial was in Holy Name cemetery.
