110 Years Ago – 1913
The 120 acre farm one and one-quarter mile north of Oyens, owned by John Majeres, has been sold to Henry Masuen for $205 per acre.
Work has begun on the new Catholic parsonage at Kingsley and it will be ready for occupancy about January 1.
Frank Shafer of Amherst is improving the looks of his farm by painting the house and the barn.
Charles Brown and Louis Miller entered some of their thoroughbred horses in the Interstate Livestock Fair at Sioux City. Charles took seven horses and two colts and Louis took five horses.
The Amherst Grange held a picnic in the Weber Grove. About 500 farmers form Plymouth and Cherokee counties attended. The Amherst quartet composed of Mr. and Mrs. J. Howard Berkstresser, Florence and Oscar Heline rendered popular selections. The Meriden band played a two hour concert.
105 Years Ago -1918
Pvt. F. Irving Goodburn was the first Marcus casualty of WW I, dying September 16 from wounds received in battle.
A mausoleum is being erected in the Marcus cemetery by the L. Gund family. When it is completed, the remains of the late Louis Gund, now in a receiving vault at Graceland Cemetery at Morningside, will be brought here and placed in it.
The Pilot Rock Plowing Match Association held its fifth annual meeting in the Harrison Fisher home, Thursday, September 11.
100 Years Ago – 1923
Merle Glenn Cave and Delilah F.Cook were married in Sioux City Saturday in the First Methodist Church
Naomi Niemann left Friday for Manning where she will teach during the coming year.
Elroy Baumann had the misfortune to run a nail into his foot and was taken to the Le Mars hospital.
Bernard Garvin who left for Toledo, Canada, was honored at a farewell party Sunday.
Lillian Dempsey of Marcus and Clifford Ritts of Washta were married at Sioux City.
Marcus radio owners heard their first prize fight broadcast Friday night.
The Marcus Alumni defeated the high school football team 39-6.
Harold, the five year old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Jaminet, was badly hurt when he fell from a tractor.
85 Years Ago -1938
Specials at Nagle’s Food Store, coffee 23¢ lb., cheese, 2 lb. Box 45¢, cookies 2 lbs. 25¢.
Margaret Delaney departed for Omaha to attend Duchesne college for her junior year in journalism.
Florence Anderson is employed at Young’s Ice Cream Plant
80 Years Ago – 1943
James Smith, Ronald Dorr, John Greff and James Meylor Jr. were inducted into the army at Des Moines Sept. 7.
Funeral services for Charles F. Hoover, 55, were held Thursday at the Methodist church.
Myrna Ament will model the $1500 was stamp dress at the Colt Show.
Grayce Woodall and Flight Officer Virgil D. Wirt were married August 31 in the Methodist church.
Patty Sand was honored on her birthday Sunday at a party.
Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Rudd are moving their household goods into the Stanley Smith home.
Mrs. Raymond Schmillen departed for Rome, New York, to join her husband who is stationed at the air depot there.
75 Years Ago -1948
Linda Nelson won first place in the doll buggy and pet parade for having the most original entry.
Roger Leavitt will return to Northwestern University at Evanston, Ill., after a three-week visit with his parents.
Cecil Dunn has accepted the position of manager of the Marcus Co-operative Lockers, to replace RI. Roberts who resigned. Jr. Franck has taken over Cecil’s former duties there.
70 Years Ago -1953
Five hundred sixty-nine students are enrolled at both Marcus schools. Three hundred fifty-even at public and 212 at Holy dame. Marcus Public has 80 in the high school and Holy Name has 54.
Pvt. John R. Bird of Marcus is 4th the 11th Engineer Combat Battalion in Korea.
JoAnn Townsend of Cherokee and Verlin Peters of Marcus were married Sunday. August 23. They will make their home on a farm south of Cleghorn.
A large barn, 50 x 116’ and its contents were destroyed by fire on the Clark Skaggs farm four miles east and a mile north of Marcus. Fire units from Meriden, Cleghorn and Marcus covered the fire. It was figured at a $5,000 loss with only about $1,200 covered by insurance.
Second Lt. Charles Rosburg, his wife and daughter, left for Seattle, Washington, where he will attend the University of Washington to study meteorology.
65 Years Ago -1958

Mr. and Mrs. George Erickson will observe their golden wedding anniversary on Tuesday, September 23, with an open house at Peace Lutheran Church.
The boys in Jerry Golden’s Shop Class at Holy Name made name plates for all class room and office doors.
The Marcus football team will play on the new field against Correctionville.
60 Years Ago -1963
A total of 986 pupils will attend the Marcus schools this year, 770 in public and 216 at Holy Name.
Ervina Saner was the only winner of Marcus Money last Saturday. She received $25.00.
Father O’Reilly of Holy Name Catholic Church announced that this would be the last year that Holy Name High School would be operated, that the parish school would be confined to elementary grades next year.
55 Years Ago -1968
Cherokee county will have a new county auditor next year as a result of Tuesday’s election. Mrs. Beverly Anderson will be the new auditor.
Mrs. August Sanow of Remsen passed away unexpectedly in her home Wed., Aug. 28.
Robert E. Porter Jr. died Friday, Sept. 6, 1968 in Floyd Valley Hospital after a long illness.
Mrs. Nellie Simons of Marcus, and Mrs. Elmer Grage of Remsen are in the Sioux Valley hospital in Cherokee as the result of an automobile collision.
50 Years Ago -1973
John H. Moore, a former Marcus resident, died suddenly Sept. 9 at Pocahontas of an apparent heart attack.
Marcus voters accepted the proposition of a central hot lunch kitchen by a large margin of 205 votes in favor of the proposal and 85 votes against.
Meriden-Cleghorn’s continuing education program will start September 18 with three programs -High School Equivalency Programs, Creative Arts, and Bookkeeping and Typing Refresher.
45 Years Ago – 1978
John “Bud” Perrett, Sr., 72, passed away Friday, September 8, alter a long illness. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter, Faith Hanson. Faith lives at Marcus.
MEDCO salutes Mae’s Bike Shop at 209 N. Beech, operated by Tom McIntosh.
Members of the Marcus Committee Care Center committee traveled to Des Moines and appeared before the Iowa Health Systems Agency officer, Mr. Steve Beasley. It will take 30 days before an opinion is rendered.
Mary Jaminet, Marlene Wooley, Shelly Helget. Linda Henke, Karen Gravenish and Janine Mogenson are the Meriden-Cleghorn varsity cheerleaders for the football season.
Irene Meyer and Ed Fletcher were married August 26 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Wayne, Nebraska. Irene is a 1975 graduate of Marcus Community High.
40 Years Ago –1983
Wendy Jo Eike and Marty Frangenberg, both of Radcliffe, Iowa, are planning an October 8th wedding. Marty is a former Marcus man.
John Dixson received his P.H.D. in Medicinal Chemistry and Natural Products at the University of Iowa.
The all-school play at Marcus Community High will be “Where the Lilies Bloom” and it will be held October 26.
Marcus football team traveled to LeMars Gehlen on Saturday, September 10, for an afternoon game. The Eagles came home with a 27-0 victory.
35 Years Ago – 1988
The City of Marcus received a $10,000 anonymous donation in a cashier’s check. Mayor Ames stated it’d be used in the City Park and Bleacher fund.
Ed Schlenger and Galen Rupp were winners of the Thursday night league at the Marcus Golf Course.
Karl Heinz and Gudrun Volkers of Malente-Gremsmuhlen, West Germany have been visiting in the William Ebmeke at Cleghorn.
An open house was held at the Marcus Primary building on Sunday evening so people could tour the new addition.
30 Years Ago – 1993
Amber Millikan, Erica Strub, Angela Hesehke, Rachel Corzelius, Kathy Malec and Jennifer Smith will lead the football cheers for 1993 at MCM Junior High.
Chris Johnson was named the Athlete of the Week as he ran for 109 years and two touchdowns to the Eagles win 20-14 over Akron-Westfield.
Rita Donaldson hosted the 500 Club in her Cleghorn home. Guest players were Hilda Rupp, Joan Peters and Mardell Skaggs.
MMC High School cheerleaders are Heidi Sehachterle. Leah Dunn, Becky Sand, Laura Rawson, Katie Busch and Jessica Means. Jade Woodall is alternate.
