What a week this has been! Of all times to wish for two hands and 10 fingers, it was this week. Thursday started the Marcus Community Fair with the Little Miss Marcus contest. While the 11 contestants were changing from sportswear, we were able to have Babies on Parade. When they were done, the girls came back dressed in their Sunday Best. Judges were Jen Miller, Lori Shene, and Megan Brown. All 11 of the girls stood waiting to see if their name was to be called. The runner-up for Little Miss Marcus is Lena Kohn and the 2023 Little Miss Marcus is…Kylie Schreier! Even though there was only one winner, ALL of the girls were winners! Each girl was given a bag of goodies—ride tickets, a shirt, etc. They all were going to hand out ribbons to animal winners at the livestock shows. And, they all were riding on a float in the Saturday parade.
This year I didn’t enter anything as I couldn’t with what I’m going through. The pain has finally lessoned for which after one month, I am thankful. I just have to tell you something that happened Saturday night. I made a quick walk through the building to see who got what and went right home. Steve got mostly #1 and got that on his brownie entry which is delicious!
I went right to bed and awhile later Steve came with some brownies. I asked him if he would go down to the freezer and bring up the two blue packs and the one frozen bag of ice. (I think these frozen bags we used to put in our coolers when we went in the bean fields to keep our drinks cold.) He came up with the two blue packs and wanted to know what I wanted to do with the frozen pack. I started to laugh! That morning I had attempted to cut up an onion and put it in a zip lock bag. The onion bag was what he had brought up! I explained that the right bag needed was a Walmart bag that was easier to carry upstairs.
Before I left the parade on Saturday, someone came and asked if I was Elaine Rassel. He went to shake my hand and said who he was and then introduced his wife. I really didn’t understand him and after they left Steve said it was Denny Gray and wife from North Carolina. I wish I would have heard who he was as the last time I saw him was at Della Gray’s funeral.
After the Cooking School Sunday, I got to visit with Kathy Jochims. She always makes my day! We used to go to the Pizza Ranch when her daughter Hannah worked there as she livened up that place—takes after her mother!
My class had a 65th reunion at the Golden Pheasant on Friday night. Steve was in charge of the events I missed out on the fair while I was at the reunion. We were asked what we had done the last 5 years. I couldn’t hear what others had done, but it was probably more exciting than what I do. But, I like to write even though it sure isn’t profitable—especially now when it takes over 4 hours to type a page and half with one finger. I try to get as much done so Bethany doesn’t have to.
I’m going to cut this short to make room for what I have written so far on the Fair. There will be more next week on the Fair.
With all this hot weather, I am thankful that I am not a “homeless person”. Not everyone chooses to be homeless, but if things continue the way they are going now, it could happen. I still haven’t gotten the letter that some have gotten telling the extreme raise in their property tax. This will affect the insurance also. The last raise in SS was taken by the raise in Medicare. Where is this extra money for taxes going to come from?
Remember in your thoughts and prayers those who have lost friends/family to death, have had their life changed, have a health problem some of which are terminal, are struggling to make ends meet even though they have a job; help those who desire “wants” are more important than “needs” that prestige isn’t everything and be with those who are still trying to shorten the distance between family/friends to build a bridge instead if a wall. Count your blessings!
I will close with this quote from Pearl S. Buck (1892-1973) American novelist: “If you want to understand today, you have to search yesterday.”
