110 Years Ago – 1913
Hundreds of hogs owned by farmers in this vicinity have died during the past few months from cholera, which is spreading itself all over the country.
Fire last Friday morning destroyed the barn and 25 acres of oats in shock on the farm operated by Frank Brown.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Metzger are the parents of a son born Sunday, August 10.
105 Years Ago -1918
Postmaster Ben Delaney has tendered his resignation as postmaster of Marcus to take effect as soon as a successor is appointed.
Melvin Woodall, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Woodall, received injuries In an automobile accident last Tuesday evening that caused his death.
Ed Zimmerman has been named as city marshal and street commissioner to succeed Sac Schessler.
Nels Anderson has sold his 120 acre farm in section 12, Tilden township, to Harry Archer, who will take possession next March.
100 Years Ago – 1923
Edmond Evans, the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. M.C. Evans, died at his home August 9 after an Illness of eight weeks.
As a result of an action taken by the Standard Oil Company of Indiana, the price of gas was reduced last Tuesday to l4 1/2¢ on the wagon and l6 1/2¢ at the service station.
C.A. Brink recently purchased the Kay theatre and equipment from Ford and Gormley.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Clark complimented Mr. and Mrs. John Rasmussen at a dinner party at their home Sunday.

Fire of an unknown origin completely demolished the house and its contents at the Joe Carey farm home Sunday.
Mrs. Clarence Dorr has been suffering the past few days with infection in her finger.
Mrs. Gilbert Evans submitted Monday to a major operation at the St. Joseph Hospital, Sioux City.
Misses Anna Kielhorn, Ila Anderson, and Edna Booth are attending an institute Thursday and Friday in La Mars.
Luther Bishop, farm hand in this community for many years, was killed in an auto accident at Breckenridge, Minnesota.

Relatives and friends gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Klingborn Sunday, August 7, to honor them on their 25th wedding anniversary.
Dr. Louis Georges was united in marriage to Patricia Sheehan of Oil City, Pennsylvania August 6 in the Friars Chapel of St. Vincent’s Church in New York City.
Mr. and Mrs. Barney Dunn and son, Ralph, plan to depart this week for the southern part of the U.S. to make their future home.

Georgia Jean Campbell became the bride of Gene Dorr Friday evening at the Evangelical Lutheran Church at Chicago.
Word has been received here of the marriage of Miss LaVon Abernathy and Milton H. Zemke.
Saturday Marvin Freed shipped four carloads of cattle to Chicago.
Esther Grauer will teach Amherst No. 8 this year.

There was an unexpected Added attraction at the Mrs. Bessie Addy sale Monday evening when a panel truck driven by Jack Dunn and Eugene Richardson’s Oldsmobile collided.
The new building being constructed for FR. Wilberding’s DeKalb seed corn business is nearing completion.
Holy Name Church was the scene of the wedding of Evelyn Nestor and Michael Clarkson on Saturday morning.
Relatives honored Mrs. Lars Anderson in her home Sunday in honor of her 83rd birthday anniversary which occured Monday.
Melvin Simons returned Saturday from the St. Joseph Hospital at Sioux City where he was a medical patient several days.

The Marcus Commercial Club is planning a Fair Caravan to neighboring towns on Wednesday. August 26th. It will consist of a band, a sound truck and many cars, to promote the 3 day Annual Marcus Fair on September 2,3 and 4.
Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Grauer are the parents of a son born August ~ in the Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sand are the pareats of a daughter born August 12 at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Le Mars.

Mary Oswald and James Schnoes, both graduates of Marcus Holy Name School, were married Saturday, August 2nd in Holy Name Catholic Church. They will make their home in Iowa City.
Jaclyn Briggs and George G. Garvin exchanged wedding vows July 26 at Holy Name Church.
Oscar Johnson, 80, passed away August 8 at his home in Quimby.
Mr. and Mrs. Max Mugge of Cleghorn are parents of a daughter, Beth Lorene, born August 8 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Le Mars.

This community was shocked Sunday to learn of the death of Ray Sand at Ames early that morning.
Diane, three-year-old daughter of Mrs. Clyde Nelson, received lacerations and bruises when the car in which she was riding with her mother rolled over on a gravel road.
Delmer Drefke returned home Monday from Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee where he had been a medical patient the past week.
Miss Donna Rae Schuknecht of Cleghorn and Steven Charles Rassel were married August 12 at Peace Lutheran Church.

Roger Rae returned to his New York home after spending 10 days visiting in the Mrs. L.L. Norris home. His wife and daughters, Maggie and Sarah remained to spend some time with her mother and their grandmother.
Mr. and Mrs. Mike Gravenish are the proud parents of a boy born August 9.
Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Prescott are parents of a baby girl born August 13 at Cherokee.
Mr. and Mrs. Merle Cave will observe their 50th wedding anniversary September 2 with an open house at Grace Methodist Church.

Kathy Lowe and Ray Wankum were married recently in the Christian Church at Maxwell, Iowa. They will make their home in Marcus where she teaches and he is employed at Sand Seed.
Eugene Collins of Bemboka, Australia was a visitor in the Carroll Kuehn home for several days. He is a friend of their son, Doug, and Eugene will visit him in Idaho.
40 Years Ago –1983
Ralph and Pattie Hesse of Sioux City are the parents of a 7 lb. 2 oz. sob born July 27th. He is named Ryan Christopher.
MEDCO proposes a Marcus Community Center. They have signed an option to purchase the Masonic Lodge building on Main Street.
Walter Ehlers, 93, a lifelong Cleghorn resident, passed away July 30. He is survived by 2 sons and 3 daughters. Burial was in Prairie View Cemetery at Paullina

Verdetta Peterson, Marcus City Clerk for 21 years, will be honored at an open house retirement party, Wednesday, at the City Hall.
Mr. and Mrs. Dominic Wibe are the parents of an 81b. 5oz. daughter, Emily Elizabeth. born July 27th.
Judy Glackin of Marcus and Ken Cuddy of Lincoln, NE. are planning an October 1st wedding in Holy Name at Marcus. Both are employed at Lincoln, NE.
