Things haven’t changed since last week. This Sunday will be the 4th Sunday since my fall. It could take two more weeks for my shoulder to heal. I can hardly wait! I looked up the meaning of PAIN. It is a mental or physical suffering that lets a person know that something is wrong with their body. They are right about that! The pain medication (1 every 6 hours) taken begins to work the first hour, begins to start up pain gradually and then the remaining 3 hours there is no relief until the next pill. Thank those of you that show your concern for me. I have been a difficult patient but I don’t like having others do my job. Thanks to Steve and Bethany for their help.
I do want to thank our Marcus rescue people for being the considerate people they are. We should be thankful for them. They know what to do as the hospital said when I arrived there.
I cannot believe how fast this summer has gone. Usually, June and July are slow. But, not this year! It will soon be time for the Marcus Fair.
It was right around Fair time when we had deaths to contend with. This year it doesn’t seem to be any different. The Durband’s from Cleghorn were at Heartland for about 2 weeks due to Janice falling when it was Joe that died. I used to walk bean fields for them—that was when weeds had to be gone. Now farmers are encouraged to leave blooming weeds for bees. (There is an article in July 27 Marcus News about bees.)
I was late in calling Faith Specht about getting her recipe for the coffee cake she had served two days before her death. She played cards the following night and I was going to ask her if she would be interested in helping me with a sewing project since she was done with quilts (for awhile). She died the day I was to call her—but then I had my accident and have passed the project to others. I only have 2 fingers to work with and that is impossible to even hold a telephone let alone try to use scissors.
Then Willie Husman was called Home by the Lord. Our family had many memories of the bowling alley with them. I also got the news that Betty Seggerman has died. I have a memory of Betty. When I first started writing for the Marcus News, I would call people up for news—that was when there was news that didn’t make Facebook first. My typed copy was then “scanned” and then printed. I couldn’t believe what I saw in the newspaper—Belly Seggerman, Belly Knudson and Belly Johnson were all missing the “tt’s” . I immediately called Betty Seggerman up to apologize for the error. She laughed and said, “My kids will get a kick from that!” The other Betty’s also laughed. I went to my original copy and found the Betty’s had tt’s not ll’s in them. I found that sometimes scanning can change a word.
Bernice McIntosh had written that she had gone to visit Stanley Birch and he couldn’t “wee” (see) very well. Then the Cherokee Clinic called to report that it had been printed for the last two weeks—50th wedding anniversary’s athletic physicals are given but you have to call for an appointment! That was another scanning error!
I had no idea of any problem with Heartland Care Center. I knew that Kody Nelson had left and another retired administrator was filling in until another could be found. The town worked very hard for many years to get a nursing home here. I wish there could be a way that we could be still independent. We are all about getting a golf clubhouse and a walking trail but somehow no one knew about what was going on with Heartland. Getting things now seem to be with certain age groups and there seems to be help with getting these but what about the Seniors? Chances are that they won’t be using the golf course or walking trail but we shouldn’t forget the first people that worked hard for many years to get Heartland.
I was at Heartland for a month two years ago when I had my hip replaced and received excellent care. If I had something to say that Heartland needs is that when the nurse’s button is pressed that someone would say “what could I help you with?” I was in 309 that was the furthest room. Except when the electricity was off and I was in a lift chair at the top as far as it would raise, I had them come down. There were other seniors in that area that would have help come and then the nurse would have to make a return trip with whatever was called for. It might be a costly thing but it sure would make many trips a lot fewer. Hospitals have this that saves time for nurses making return trips. (Like I say, this might be costly, but other priorities don’t seem to have any problem getting money.)
I know that our rural hospitals and employees are very capable of caring for patients but our government doesn’t seem to have any money for these hospitals—so, just patch a patient up and send them home even though they might have no hands or movable fingers to work with. It doesn’t make any difference what color (red, blue, or white) is in charge, all the politicians want is our vote for them to spend more than what we have. This is my opinion so don’t start calling or writing me about how I feel about what is happening when all that free money was spent and now it has come back on us with taxes.
Please find out when the public meeting and where it will be and attend for Heartland’s problem. Show Heartland’s Board that YOU care or forever hold your peace.
I am hoping there will be room in the newspaper that the article about the gecko that the Zoo brought to the Library will make it this week. Geckos are not shown to the public except when there is a presentation given like at the Library.
Remember in your thoughts and prayers those who have lost friends/family to death, have had their lives changed, have a health problem some of which are terminal, are struggling to make ends meet even though they have a job, help those who desire “wants” are more important then “needs” that prestige isn’t everything and be with those who are still trying to shorten the distance between family/friends to build a bridge instead of a wall. Count your blessings!
I will close with this quote from Taraji P. Henson, “I don’t harp on the negative because if you do, then there’s no progression. There’s no forward movement. You got to always look on the bright side of things, and we are in control. Like, you have control over the choices you make.”
