110 Years Ago – 1913
Harry Elmore has succeeded Gus Berggren at Weart and Lysaght manager at Cleghorn.
Gus has gone to Cherokee to take a position in the company there.
Mrs. Kopp will speak at the Methodist Church next Sunday on “Sowing to the wind and reaping the whirlwind.”
The automobile owners of Liberty Township have organized a club with Nels Johnson as president and Robert French, secretary.
105 Years Ago -1918
A special election will be held for the purpose of granting H. J. Reimers a franchise to operate a telephone system in Marcus for 15 years.
All men registered in Marcus and cabled in the present quota are requested to call on Mrs. C. F. Dwight and receive a comfort kit.
Mrs. Weink and Mrs. Louise Freeze entertained at a gathering in honor of William Tuecke who will leave soon for the Army.
H. J. Treinen became entire owner of the Flynn-Treinen Auto Co. as the other partner was cabled to service. The new owner will conduct business under the name of Overland Garage Company
LB. Porter, clerk at the IC. depot here, has been assigned as operator at the Wren tower.
The thirteen month old baby of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Gund is recovering from a serious bout of pneumonia.
100 Years Ago – 1923
Walter Hobbs entertained at a family dinner last Sunday at the Smith Cafe.
The Amherst girls and the Marcus township girls will contest for honors at a game of indoor baseball to be played Sunday at Hoop’s diamond.
95 Years Ago -1928
The Legion drum and bugle corps will go to Sioux City Thursday evening to practice with the Monahan drum corps.
G. A. Brink was injured in an auto accident near Hinton Monday evening and is a patient in a Sioux City hospital.
John Bird, a former resident, died Monday morning at his home at Sexton, Iowa. Mr. Bird had started to Marcus to visit relatives when he was stricken.
The new county budget, approved by the board of supervisors, shows a reduction of $14,000 in the taxes to be raised this year.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Will Hurd July 16, a daughter, Elaine Juanita.
Mrs. Anna Mallette, proprietor of the Marcus Beauty Shop, announces a special price of $8.00 for a permanent before August 1.

Bob Hagey led his baseball team to a 5-1 win over Granville. H. Baumann,
Fred Zangger Jr., Bud Wheeler, Jerry Peters, Tom and Mike Meylor, Duane Beaton and Howard McConnell attended Boy Scout Camp last week at Sioux City.
Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Garvin are the parents of a son born July 13 at the Le Mars hospital.
Florence McNutt, who has been here demonstrating the Wear-Ever aluminum products, left for Cherokee this week.

Nagle Bros. started construction of a new dance hall in what is planned as an elaborate amusement plant. Under the ballroom will be erected a bowling alley to be managed by Harry and Louis Grauer.
Mrs. Katherine Frangenberg, 63, passed away Monday in a Sioux City hospital.
Elmer Knebel of Storm Lake has been promoted to cashier of the Commercial Trust and Savings Bank of that city.
Jean Bancroft celebrated her 5th birthday Friday at a party.
Threshing was begun in this community this week. A number of farmers are having their grain combined.

Two severe storms hit Marcus and vicinity this week damaging lights and telephone lines.
75 Years Ago -1948
Lawrence Wurth, Marcus farmer, suffered a broken back in a farm accident when he fell from a hay sling while repairing the track in the mow of the barn on the farm three miles south of town.
Mr. and Mrs. Julian Schissel of Cherokee are parents of their first child, a daughter. She has been named Mary Elizabeth.
Denny, the 18-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Gray, is recuperating from an attack of pneumonia which he suffered the past week.
Joe Schmitz stepped on a piece of iron at his shop Monday and severely sprained his ankle.
A group of friends and relatives gathered n the home of Mrs. Annie Quamen to honor her on her 90th birthday anniversary.

A son, Michael Dudley, was born to Dr. and Mrs. M. D. Hayden July 17.
TM. James Bradley was graduated from the School of Methods at Camp Carson, Cob., on July 18.
Harry Nelson and Durward Rieper will leave for the Naval Air Station at San Diego, Calif., for their two weeks’ annual cruise with the Naval Air Reserve.
Moses Burdette Ames, 75, of Cleghorn died July 11 after having been hospitalized the previous day.
Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Waller are the proud parents of a daughter, Marlene, born July 17.

Dr. and Mrs. M. W. Polson of Sioux Rapids became parents of a daughter, Kimberly Ann, born July 9.
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Ferris of Correctionville announce the arrival of a son, William Ray, on July 19.
Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Ruden announce the arrival of an 8 lb. 6.5 oz. son, Peter Raymond, on July 12.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Cronin announce the arrival of a daughter, Kathy Jo, born July 11.
Wedding vows were exchanged by Lorna Joyce Zellmer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gust Zellmer of Lawton, and Marvin Lee Ebert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Ebert.

A daughter was born July 18 at Lutheran Hospital in Sioux City to Mrs. Ray Gabel. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Merle Cave of Marcus.
Gayle Flanagan left Sunday morning for Torrance, Calif., where she will be employed.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Edwards have purchased the Corner Cafe from Mrs. James Koch, who has operated it in the past several months. The new owners come here from Inglewood, Calif., and have an infant son, also Richard.
Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Rainboth of Marcus announce the engagement of their daughter, Sharon, to Ronnie Sadler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Sadler of Washta.

Sgt. and Mrs. Milton Wurth of Alconbary Air Force Base in England are parents of a 7 lb. 4 oz. son, Andrew Philip, born July 18.
Mrs. Pat Wiebersch was honored on her birthday by Mrs. Erv Galles, Mrs. Cliff Pick, Lilas Goodrich and Virginia Irwin with dinner at Uncle Milt’s Cafe.
Charles Skaggs of Cleghorn was honored on his 85th birthday July 17 at a surprise party held in his honor.
Gayle McIntosh of Cleghorn spent a week in the Floyd Slagle home at Sargent, Nebr., as a 4-H guest of Gloria Slagle.
Mr. and Mrs. Arnie Berglund and family, Elaine Parris, Larry Trapp and Sid Barwick attended the Schaller Popcorn celebration where Tom and Bob Berglund showed a steer.

An open shower honoring Patty Cargin, bride-elect of Dale Lunders, was held at Visitation Church Hall at Maryhill on July 26.
An open house shower honoring Lenora Huisman, bride-elect of Elwin Johnson of Cleghorn, was held July 20 at the Meriden Community Building.
A leak in the Cleghorn water tower was repaired recently. The damage occurred 40 feet in the riser of the tower.
A post-nuptial shower honoring Mrs. Steve Pritts was held July 9 in the Meriden Evangelical Free Church.
Mrs. Florence Johnson is now residing in her home after spending some time in the Cherokee Care Center.

MEDCO salutes the Marcus Golf C1nb and their staff Frank and Kathryn Burch, Vince Garvin and Maxine Ludwig.
Dr. Jerry Van Es has joined the Medical Associates and will be in the Marcus office Friday afternoon.
Barbara Anne Lowe of Maxwell, iowa, and Randy Tentinger of Marcus are planning an August 12 wedding.

Rae Ann Rupp announces the opening ol her “Faintly Hair Design” on Monday, July 25, at 204 N. Main.
The Cleghorn City Council rejected Louis Ducommun’s offer to give them his store building. It has been condemned arid must be torn down.
Jim Sanow and Dave Elliot are factory trained and certified in body repair and painting techniques and work at Hesse Body Shop.

“Country with a Touch of Brass” musical group will perform at the Marcus Fair Monday evening, August t5.
Austin Lee Galles, S lb. 2 ox., was born to Frau and Roxanne Galles of Marcus on July 16. i-Ic has a brother.
William Ehmcke of Cleghorn will observe his 90mb birthday on July 30.
The annual Resene family reunion was held July tO in the Cleghorn shelter house with 54 family members present. Mrs. Rose Kinzel. 99, and her sister, Mrs. Agnes McIntosh, 91, were the oldest members in attendance.
The Marcus Merchants will be playing in the Sub-state fast pitch softball tournament at Hubbard Park, Sioux City July 22-24.
25 Years Ago – 1998
Stanley J. Smith, 96, longtime Marcus resident, passed away Sunday, July 18. Survivors include his wile, a son and a daughter.
Marvin Rassel of Sand Seed Service. Inc. of Marcus attended a feed and management school at Kent Feed headquarters at Muscatine, Iowa.
Joe and Lisa Hueser arc the proud parents of a 6 lb. 5 oz. son, Benjamin Joseph, born July 16.
Jack Foresman explained the 911 system to lie Cleghorn American Auxiliary and urged everyone to attend the July 29 open house meeting to explain how the system will work.
