A son was born June 27 to Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Carey.
A son was born June 30 to Mr. & Mrs. Frank Neustrom.
Merle Hamad 2 1/2 years, ran into a moving auto and was dragged for several feet and badly bruised.
A house and other buildings are being built on the James Rae farm in Amherst.
95 Years Ago -1928
James Williams is in a critical condition resulting from injuries received when he stepped through a hole in a hay loft.
The Marcus Clubs defeated the Larrabee team there Sunday by a score of 5 to 2.
Alfred Brandt recently purchased the property known as the late Alice Kolb home for a consideration of $3,300.
Mrs. Kate Zangger is building a new home in the east part of town.
Mrs. Francis Swindle was badly burned when the lower part of a double boiler exploded and threw scalding liquid over her.
Henry Baker and family visited radio station WNAX of Yankton, SD.

Mr. and Mrs. Adam Pfeifer quietly observed their fiftieth wedding anniversary July 2.
Postmaster and Mrs. John Delaney returned from a month’s vacation trip through the west.
The R. J. Pattison family has leased the modern bungalow now occupied by the George Johnson family.
Thelma June Charles of Anaheim, Calif., and Chester LaRay Barnes were Wed June 24.
Mr. and Mrs. Mike McClintock are rejoicing over the arrival of a 7th son born July 4.
Naomi Beaton and Elizabeth McMillian returned to Cedar Falls Monday after visiting in the George Beaton home.
Gladys B. McCoy of Quimby became the bride of Harold Johnson of Meriden, son of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Johnson of Marcus.
Mr. and Mrs. George Burch are the parents of a daughter born July 2 in the Sacred Heart Hospital at Le Mars.
80 Years Ago – 1943
Catherine Specht and Pfc. Arthur Johnson of Cherokee were married Wednesday evening, June 23rd, in Trinity Lutheran Church. He will report to Camp Cooke, Ca. and she will make her home with her parents.
Mary Jean Knox and Jeanette Galigan of Ogden, Utah, are spending a week in the homes of their parents at Marcus.
Ashley Edsall, former Commercial teacher at Marcus Public School, has ‘been commissioned an Ensign in the U. S. Navy. He is attending a college in New York City for further training.
Francis Treptow and Ginger Ann were honored at a picnic birthday dinner Sunday at the Charles Auchstetter home.
The Nelson Furniture Company is holding a closing-out sale this week.
Raymond L. Brady and Lyle W. Schmillen registered with the county draft board as 18-year-olds.
75 Years Ago -1948
Former Marcusite, Michael J. O’Brien, 53, now of Sioux City, passed away in the Veteran’s Hospital at Des Moines. He had operated the Red Mill Cafe here. Survivors include his wife, 2 daughters and 6 sons.
Rita Satterlee is employed at Sacred Heart Hospital at LeMars for the summer months She will resume her studies at the University of Iowa in the fall.
Kathleen Sholly of Marcus and Ray Kass of Remsen, were married Tuesday morning, June 22, in Holy Name Church. Tommy Hueser and Jimmy Meehan were altar boys and Charlotte Collins played the organ. The Kass couple will live in an apartment in Marcus and he will farm with his father.
Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Grauer are parents of a daughter, Virginia Marie, born in the Sacred Heart Hospital at Le Mars.
Mr. and Mrs. Jake Dixson were honored on their 40th wedding anniversary the Fourth of July, in the home of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Grage at Remsen.
70 Years Ago -1953
Mr. and Mrs. Jake E. Dixson are the parents of a 7 lb.l41/2 oz. son, born June 30th, and named Jake Edward, Jr.
Cpl. Gerald Meyer returned to the States after a year in Korea. He is spending a 30 day furlough in the parental Henry Meyer home. He will then report to Miami, Fla. for further duty.
Joan Delaney of Marcus and Pvt. Jerald Hagert are planning a July 23rd wedding in Marcus Holy Name Church.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Pitts are the parents of a son born July 7. He has a sister, Lynn, to welcome him home.
Mr. and Mrs. Francis Delaney announce the approaching marriage of their daughter, Joan, to Pvt Jerald Hagert. The wedding will take place July 25 in Holy Name Church.
65 Years Ago -1958
S/Sgt. and Mrs. Ronald Steffen and family arrived in San Francisco after a 4 year hitch in Japan. They plan to be in Marcus later this week.
Reverend Robert Hanson a professor at Nebraska Christian College and a former missionary to the Philippine Islands, showed slides and told of his work there to the Cleghorn Church of Christ congregation.
Specials at Clarkson’s IGA include: 5lbs. of granulated sugar-49¢, Kraft Miracle Whip-49¢ a qt., 6 pack of 7-Up-29¢ and tomatoes 19¢ lb.
Mr. and Mrs. Leo Wendt announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Devera Mae, to Roger Broderick, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Broderick of Bayside, NY.

Marcus volunteers who helped clean the streets after the Sunday, Monday carnival included Don Geringer, Stan Nervig, Richard Holmes, William Harms, Charles Sand, Lee Garvin, Fred Wilkens, Larry Rassel and Lovell Roberson, Jr.
Mrs. Iva Grover of Marcus announces the engagement and approaching marriage of her daughter, Lois Kay, to Merlyn Hansen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfrel Hansen of Washta.
Walter Brownlee has accepted the position of combination secretary to the community school district board of education and the school superintendent.

Mr. and Mrs. Tom Meylor and family of Timber Lake, S.D. are spending the 4th of July weekend in the home of Tom’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Meylor.
Carol Miller, bride-elect of Richard Lytle, was honored at a bridal shower Wednesday evening in the Grace United Methodist Church.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Klingbeil of Remsen are the parents of their first child, a 7 lb. 3 oz. son, Stuart Lee, born June 29.
Mr. and Mrs. John Fry, who celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary June 20, were honored June 23 with a family dinner at their home.
Woody Wood has leased the Haahr building on Main Street and is making preparations to open a youth recreation center.
50 Years Ago -1973
Randy Hanson of Marcus Community High School baseball team is the leading batter on the team with a 586 average. John Ladenthin is next with a 367 average.
A personal bridal shower for Margaret Scott was given by Mildred Briggs, Gladys Phillips and Dorothy Neir on June 26 in the Barbara Moats home.
Miss Donna Pederson, bride-to-be of Larry Bird, was honored at a miscellaneous shower in the Marcus Municipal Hall on June 20.
Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Nelson and Mary of Cleghorn attended a two-day orientation at UNI in Cedar Falls where Mary will be a freshman student this fall.
The graduating class of Marcus High School of 1938 held their 35th class reunion June 30 at the Golden Pheasant at Remsen.
A very interesting talk by Lea Treinen was enjoyed by the Senior Citizens. She told of her experiences in the Allegheny Mountains working with a Christian Education Project.
45 Years Ago – 1978
William J. Specht, 78, passed away Wednesday, June. 21 after a short illness. Survivors include his wife. Viviann, a son, a daughter and 2 sisters. Funeral services were held at Trinity Lutheran Church with burial in the Oakhill Cemetery at Cherokee.
The Cleghorn City Council voted to establish funds for paving the west end of Grace St. to L40 with an estimated cost of $25,000.
Alma Johnson of Cleghorn, Florence Addy and Bessie Addy of Marcus were presented OES 50 year pins. Carries Simons Lovesee was honored as a 70 year member as she joined the Marcus group June 9, 1908. Carrie resides in Minnesota.
40 Years Ago –1983
The City Council of Marcus will appoint qualified persons to fill the vacancy of the office of mayor, due to the death of John F. Dunn, and a vacancy in the City Council due to the resignation of Gerald Pallesen.
Mrs. Janet Johnson of Montrose, Co. was a guest in the parental Harold Donaldson home at Cleghorn this past week. She attended the Rupp reunion at Maryhill and the 10 year reunion of her Class of 1973 at Meriden-Cleghorn
The Marcus Eaglette softball team posted 4 wins; they defeated R- U, Anthon-Oto Aurelia and SB-L. Brenda Sand was the winning pitcher in the victories.
35 Years Ago – 1988
Marcus farmer, Laurence Johnson, continues to improve following the mauling he received from a cow which he had over 12 years. The cow also killed her own calf.
Keith Johnson, a 1984 graduate of Meriden. Cleghorn High School, and Stephanie Hess of Marshall, MN. announce their engagement. He is employed at Bloomigton, MN. and she attends Southwest State University at Marshall.
This issue of the News carries the picture of Aloha Flight #243, with 2/3s of its fuselage gone. It blew off at 24,000 feet over the Hawaiian Islands. Only one flight attendant was killed. Tony and Mary Knox Marinello and his brother Ignazio and Louise Marinello, were among the thankful passengers.
25 Years Ago – 1998
J. Darrell Dunn,74, of Meriden died Sunday, July 4th, after a lengthy illness. He lived all his life in the same home which Spanned 120 years and 3generation5 Survivors include his wife, 5 sons and a daughter.
Thad Rasmussen and Tracy Oeffner will be honored with a wedding dance Friday evening, July 9th, in the Paullina Legion Hall with music by Gentle Persuasion
MMC Community School is accepting bids for construction renovation of existing 440 yard Kalite running track, into a 400 meter all weather running track.
20 Years Ago – 1993
Matt Klingenberg, 12 year old son of Rod and Mira Klingenberg scored a hole-in-one on the 150 yard, #9 at the local links. He used a 4 Iron.
Marcus Jaycees donated a $900 check to the new sign project on the south edge of Marcus.
The Cleghorn Lions Club donated a park bench in their local park, in memory of Lawrence Goodrich for his service and dedication to the organization.
