105 Years Ago -1918
In its work in America and Europe, the Y.M.C.A. is now spending a total of $5,000,000 a month.
J. H. Knox, who completed the school census, found 261 persons between the ages of 5 and 21. Average daily school attendance is 161.
Howard John Simons, son of Mr. & Mrs. Ross A. Simons of Tilden, was registered as a new birth at the recorder’s office.
Joe Wagner answered the call of his country this week. Charles Skaggs purchased the Mrs. E. Newcomer 160 acre farm north of Cleghorn for $245 per acre.
100 Years Ago – 1923
Robert Meylor is the new manager of the Standard Oil Company, succeeding Clarence Scott.
Everett Hobbs purchased the West Side Dairy owned by R. J. Pattison and L. M. Miller, for $27,500.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Carl Anderson June 25, a son.
L. M. Miller entertained at an announcement party in honor of the marriage of his daughter, Marie, to Donald Loomis on July 3.
Thomas Birch narrowly escaped serious injury when a truck backed over the wagon in which he was riding and from which he jumped.

Three hundred women attended the annual Achievement Day for Farm Bureau ladies of Cherokee County held at Cherokee.
Matthew Costello and Anna May-rose of Oyens were married at Oyens this week.
A prominent and beautiful wedding was solemnized at Holy Name Church when Genevieve Collins and Viking Sjostrom were united in marriage.
Rev, and Mrs. G. R. Gilbert have announced the marriage of their daughter, Ruth, to Merrill E. Burnett of Stuart during Easter vacation.
85 Years Ago -1938
Marcus baseball club won 5-4 over Remsen there Sunday with Bob Hagey pitching.
Roman Treinen is remodeling the meat market purchased from Bancroft and will reopen Friday.
Joseph Hamilton – purchased the Kenneth Bancroft home on Locust Street, possession being given September 1.
Stanley Addy was elected president of the Farmers Elevator Company at the annual meeting Saturday.
Dr. R. E. Simonsen turned over his Buick coupe on a muddy road five miles northwest of town early last Wednesday morning.
Mark and Kenneth Bancroft purchased the Dan Smith farm southwest of Marcus.
80 Years Ago – 1943
In a beautiful formal wedding June 30, Thelma Addy became the bride of Charles Nielsen.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Anderson, Joyce and Dennis of Tilden Twp. visited with their daughter-sister, Ruth, who is in nurses training at St. Joseph’s Hospital at Sioux City.
Claudette Colbert and Joel McCrea star in “The Palm Beach Story” showing in the Lyric Theatre.
75 Years Ago -1948
Irvin Deichmann and Gerald Ogren attended Walther League Camp at Lake Okoboji.
Carmel Lutheran Church was the scene of a pretty late June wedding when Delores Nelson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sigurd Nelson of Cherokee, became the bride of Orville Tapper of Akron. The Rev. C. W. Samuelson officiated at the ceremony.
Cleghorn Consolidated School District sold 2 framed schoolhouses, located in Liberty Twp. at public auction July 10th.
B & W Sales, local Kaiser-Frazer dealers, have a new neon sign, installed this week, as part of the general rejuvenation of their building.
70 Years Ago -1953
Pvt. Wilfred Goth of Camp Carson, Cob., arrived Saturday to spend a few days in the Merle Sand home.
A new home is under construction on the Bob Ames property in south Marcus. The Ames family has been living in a basement home for a number of years.
Mr. and Mrs. Jake E. Dixson are the parents of a son, Jake Edward Jr., born June 30.
A basement is being dug on Sunset Hill for a new home for Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Juhl. Leonard purchased the house sold at auction by Percy Means some time ago, and will move it to the Sunset Hill site.
Leon Bentz began work at DeVries Motor Co. here as bookkeeper and parts man. He replaced Howard Flanagan who plans to leave for California August 1st.
Specials at Nagle’s Food Shop: all flavors of Well’s ice cream, 89¢ a half gallon, Folger’s Coffee, 85¢ lb., 10 lbs. granulated sugar, 96¢ and butter, 66¢ lb.
65 Years Ago -1958
Gene Tschill, a Marcus business man and a longtime resident of the community, died suddenly while fishing at Lake Okoboji in company with a group of other Marcus business men.
S/Sgt. and Mrs. Ronald Steffen and family arrived last Friday in San Francisco from a four-year hitch in Japan. They plan to arrive in Marcus soon.
Jackie, 10-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Rayburn, was injured when the bicycle he was riding entered the intersection north of the swimming pool from the south, crashing the front fender of a pickup driven by Dale Stuhr, a mechanic at Grey’s Garage.
Mayor J. C. Means underwent surgery for the correction of a hernia at Sacred Heart Hospital at Le Mars.
60 Years Ago -1963
The Marcus fire department was called to the east end of town Tuesday morning when Harry Erickson’s car caught fire. Damage was confined to wiring under the hood in the amount of about $50.
Lynn Gross, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Gross, attended music camp at the State University. While at camp Lynn auditioned for a four-year scholarship. The scholarship was verified and Lynn will attend the University of South Dakota this fall.
The new community fire station, located just north of Dixson’s 66 station is rapidly taking shape. The Ebert Bros. crew are working on the interior.
Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Schlenger of Marcus announce the approaching marriage of their daughter, Janet Eileen, to Debit Zimmerman of Wayne, Nebr., on August 4.
Percy Means has bought the residence by Mrs. William Collins. Converting it to a duplex. Mr. Walter Brownlee will move into one of the apartments as soon as it is ready.
55 Years Ago -1968
Mr. and Mrs. Dean Ulrichson of Newark, Dela., announce the arrival of a 7 lb. 5 ox. daughter, Rachel Arline, born June 18.
Bonnie Simons, 16, and Robert Leavitt, 14, have been granted junior membership in the American Angus Association at St. Joseph, Mo.
Ronald A. Galles, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robet Galles, was among those included on the Dean’s List for the spring quarter at Iowa State University at Ames. Ron has been accepted at the College of Veterinary at Ames for the fall quarter.
Woody announces the opening of “The Hangout”, a gathering place for the younger set. An adult will be in attendance at all times.
Mrs. Art Nielsen and Mrs. E.V. Delaney hosted the all-day outing of the Marcus Garden Club held at Spring Lake Park at Cherokee. They enjoyed tours of interesting places.
50 Years Ago -1973
Mr. and Mrs. Neils Kloster will observe their 35th wedding anniversary with an open house at Christ Lutheran Church in Remsen on July 1.
Mr. and Mrs. Tom Corcoran of Shorewood, Wisc., are the proud parents of an 8 lb. 8 oz. baby girl. She has been named Ann Marie.
Col. and Mrs. Vance Marquis accompanied their son, Vance Bruce, to Sioux Falls where he will leave for service in the Air Force.
Marilyn Kay Goodburn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Goodburn of Cleghorn, and Steven L. Fassler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Fassler of Cherokee, were united in marriage at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Cherokee.
Rev. F. W. Shreve has been appointed the new minister of Grace Methodist Church in Marcus, replacing Rev. Richard Viney.
45 Years Ago – 1978
Bernadette and Heidi Mendt of Cleghorn and Lynn Hoefling and Nancy Meylor of Marcus were named to the Dean’s List at Ellsworth Community College for the 1978 Spring semester.
Mr. and Mrs. Loren Kauffman, Nancy and John returned from a west coast trip. They helped then daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Foertsch, move to Elko, Nev. They also visited Disneyland and many friends.
40 Years Ago –1983
Rozanne Hansen and Jeff Gross were married June 11 in Our Savior Lutheran Church at Humboldt. They will make their home in Marcus.
The Marcus City Council has appointed Robert Ames to fill the unexpired portion of Mayor as of July 11th.
Seventy-five members of the Lundell family gathered in the Oakdale Church Sunday for a family reunion. They registered from California, Arizona, Wisconsin, Nebraska and many places in Iowa.
35 Years Ago – 1988
Kyle Drefke of Marcus was named to the President’s List at the University of Iowa. One must have a grade average of 4.0 in all their academic subjects for the preceding two semesters and a total of 24 credits during that period.
25 Years Ago – 1998
The Marcus Fire Department is celebrating 100 years of service to the Marcus Community this year. They will be selling mugs, shirts and belt buckles.
The 4th of July Volleyball tournament was a great success with Marty Irwin’s team placing first, Terry Ames’ second and Nate Nelson’s, third.
