105 Years Ago -1918
Nellie Mae McIntosh became the bride of Edward Wolfe of Harper June 19 in the James McIntosh home.
John F. Berquist, 71, died Sunday morning in the Le Mars hospital from cancer of the stomach.
J. William Ryan and Lillian M. Goebel of Sioux City were united in marriage June 13 at St. Boniface church in Sioux City.
Thomas Meehan purchased the 200 acre farm owned by Charles Meyer seven miles northeast of Marcus.
100 Years Ago – 1923
Marcus Booster baseball team won 21-7 from Granville on the local diamond with Blietz and Kiner pitching.
Clara Neuroth and Ray Walsh were united in marriage in St. Joseph’s Church at Granville.
Hattie Ulstad was elected Oracle of the Neighbors Camp, newly organized here.
Edmonds, Londergan and Snyder will hold a pure-bred Shorthorn auction sale June 28, five miles north and 1/2 mile east of town.
95 Years Ago -1928
Harold Hohbach and Frances Mundy of Tilden township were recently married.
The Amherst Farm Bureau will hold a picnic at the William Kielhorn farm June 28. A picnic supper and program will be enjoyed.
Leon Mitchell of Cleghorn and Beulah Judd of Atlantic were married June 12 at the home of the bride’s mother in Atlantic.
Mr. and Mrs. Granville Petty and Leonard departed Tuesday morning by auto for Hollywood to make their home.
85 Years Ago -1938
Lee S. Pratt and Hazel Hummel of Madison, S. Dak., were married June 6th.
The large cottonwood tree has been saved near the Farmers Elevator although it stands partially in the way of the newly laid concrete on Railroad Street.
Kenneth Bancroft sold his meat market this week to Roman Treinen.
Mary Woodall was united in marriage to George Rutter Thursday afternoon.
Warren Reed has been employed at the Walter Dorr farm the past two weeks picking strawberries.
Bargains in canned goods at the Sjostrom’s store are: tomatoes, 6d; pork and beans, 5¢; Corn, 7¢; No. 10 can of prunes, 28¢; flour, 99¢.
The paving contractors expect to complete work in Marcus today.

Catherine Specht and Pfc. Arthur Johnson of Cherokee were married Wednesday evening, June 23rd, in Trinity Lutheran Church. He will report to Camp Cooke, Ca. and she will make her home with her parents.
Ruth Wittkopp became the bride of the Rev. S. Schroeder of Thief River, Minn., Tuesday evening in Trinity Lutheran Church.
Doris L. Nelson and Sgt. John Fry of Merrill were married June 20 in Carmel Lutheran Church.
Ben Beck left Sunday for Rochester, Minn., where he will re-enter the Kohler hospital for another operation.
Loren Stowater sustained flesh wounds on his hand Wednesday while backing a tractor to a wagon, catching his hand between them.
75 Years Ago -1948
Former Marcusite, Michael J. OBrien, 53, now of Sioux City, passed away in the Veteran’s Hospital at Des Moines. He had operated the Red Mill Cafe here. Survivors include his wife, 2 daughters and 6 sons.
Kathleen Sholly of Marcus and Ray Kass of Remsen, were married Tuesday morning, June 22, in Holy Name Church. Tommy Hueser and Jimmy Meehan were altar boys and Charlotte Collins played the organ. The Kass couple will live in an apartment in Marcus and he will farm with his father.
E. E. Slechta of Denison has bought Flanagan’s Place, Marcus pool hall and tavern, from Howard Flanagan, and will take possession July 1. C. L. Flanagan had operated the place for 22 years.
Mr. and Mrs. M. H. Galles are the parents of a daughter, Barbara Jo, born in the Sacred Heart hospital.
Audrey C. Bird, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Bird, was united in marriage to Marcel W. Matgen of Remsen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Marcel Matgen of San Francisco.

Mr. and Mrs. Jake E. Dixson are the parents of a 7 lb.14 1/2 oz. son, born June 30th, and named Jake Edward, Jr.
Joan Delaney of Marcus and Pvt. Jerald Hagert are planning a July 23rd wedding in Marcus Holy Name Church.
Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Steffen were honored on their 25th wedding anniversary at a dinner in the Peace Lutheran Church parlors.
Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Nelson of Cleghorn are the parents of a daughter born on June 13 at the Sioux Valley hospital. She has been named Christine Louise.
Mrs. Lin Stowater, school lunch manager for Marcus public school, was awarded a certificate by Iowa State College June 20 in recognition of successful completion of the school lunch short course held at the college.

Nuptial vows were exchanged June 18 at eight o’clock at Carmel Lutheran Church in Marcus when Elaine Juhl, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Juhl, became the bride of Floyd Rassel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rassel.
Mary Ann Kestel was honored on her fourth birthday at a dinner in the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Kestel.
Terry Mead, 14-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Merle Mead, returned to his home after an appendectomy at Sacred Heart hospital in Le Mars.
Arthur Dorr of Amherst township has been re-elected as one of the Commissioners of the Cherokee County Soil Conservation District.
60 Years Ago -1963
Vernon Means has accepted the position as operator of the Marland Theatre. Vein will replace Don Steffen who recently resigned the position.
A surprise 10th anniversary wedding observance, honoring Pastor and Mrs. Henry Friedrich, was held at Trinity Lutheran Church.
D. A. Springer of Cleghorn was honored at a surprise birthday party for his 86th birthday June 19.
55 Years Ago -1968
Mr. and Mrs. Tom Meylor and family of Timber Lake, S.D. are spending the 4th of July weekend in the home of Tom’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Meylor.
Todd McQueen returned to his Sheldon home after spending several days with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Booth.
Carol Miller, bride-elect of Richard Lytle, was honored at a bridal shower Wednesday evening in the Grace United Methodist Church.
Dennis Gray, student at Morning-side College, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Gray, has been selected as one of those from that college to be included in the 1968 edition of “Who’S Who in American Colleges and Universities”.
Mr. and Mrs. Jake Biezuns of Cleghorn were honored June 19 on their 25th wedding anniversary hosted by Mr. and Mrs. LaVerne Shafer.

Randy Hanson of Marcus Community High School baseball team is the leading batter on the team with a 586 average. John Ladenthin is next with a 367 average.
The Cleghorn Lions Club members and their families held a picnic at the County Park near Meriden. The next meeting will be in September.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenny Tentinger and Roger returned to their Springfield, Oregon home after spending a 2 week visit in the home of Mrs. Ethel Carney.
Mrs. Walter Nielsen was taken to the Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee Monday evening after she suffered a broken wrist resulting from a fall.
Mr. and Mrs. Neils Kloster will observe their 35th wedding anniversary with an open house at Christ Lutheran Church in Remsen on July 1.
George C. Grauer passed away June 24 at SVMH in Cherokee. He came to the Marcus community at the age of 16 where he had lived since.
45 Years Ago – 1978

40 Years Ago –1983
The City Council of Marcus will appoint qualified persons to fill the vacancy of the office of mayor, due to the death of John F. Dunn, and a vacancy in the City Council due to the resignation of Gerald Pallesen.
Mrs. Janet Johnson of Montrose, Co. was a guest in the parental Harold Donaldson home at Cleghorn this past week. She attended the Rupp reunion at Maryhill and the 10 year reunion of her Class of 1973 at Meriden-Cleghorn.
35 Years Ago – 1988
Laurence Johnson, continues to improve following the mauling he received from a cow which he had for over 12 years. The cow also killed her own calf.
