130 Years Ago -1893
Thomas Phelan is erecting a commodious dwelling in the east part of Marcus in the Barnes addition.
J. F. McDonald sold his residence property to F. M. Barr and will build in the Barnes addition.
Geo. T. Woods has two monkeys, a parrot and an alligator which he got in the south.
125 Years Ago -1898
We believe the business men of Marcus should put in at least two hitching rails in front of their business place. Farmers complain that there is a scarcity of same.
Dr. Loomis amputated the third finger on the left hand of Jake Misenhelder’s four year old boy. He caught his hand in the cogs on a corn sheller.
Ed Gerlack has reopened his old stand and we now have three barber shops here.
120 Years Ago -1903
Viking Sjostrom purchased the John Meyer dray line on Monday and is now in possession.
The mill company here is making plans to build an addition 30 x 30 to their plant, three stories high.
John Williams paid $10,200 for the Henry Quirin 80 acres south of Marcus.
115 Years Ago – 1908
Joseph Beck receive 99 votes in the town election to defeat W.N. Fry for, mayor, John Knox defeated James Gurley for councilman 99 to 89.
B. Radcliffe is now president of the school board.
Post card views of the Marcus Public School are for sale at Carey’s.
110 Years Ago – 1913
A small addition, 10’ x 20’, was added to the west side of the Peters Bros. garage. It will be used as an office and stock room. The work was done by Sylvester and Peters.
Miss Clara Hewicker of Remsen spent several days in Marcus with her sister, Mrs. Fred Klingbeil who has been ill.
Last Saturday brought many farmers to town. The News man counted 135 teams of horses at one time during the afternoon.
Roy Nield and Donald Loomis of Marcus are spending their week’s vacation from school on the Louis Grauer farm.
105 Years Ago -1918
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Addy moved to his father’s farm in Sheridan Township.
Sam Schessler was appointed town marshal for the ensuing year by Mayor J.P. Evans and J.J. Garvin will be water superintendent.
D.A. Day has started building a garage on the property he purchased from W. Corbett.
95 Years Ago -1928
There were 44 new cars registered here during March.
The J.P. Evans home caught fire from sparks in the chimney. It was quickly extinguished.
William Hyndman discovered his 1918 model Dodge touring car stolen from his garage during the night.
85 Years Ago -1938
Superintendent Harold Wood was re-elected to serve as superintendent of the Marcus Public school for the 12th consecutive year.
Henry Carney, 79, passed away April 9, in the home of his niece, Mrs. Merle Weicht, after a lingering illness.
Arthur Halliday of Rock Rapids arrived in Marcus recently to go into the garage business in the Alfred Dorr building.
80 Years Ago – 1943
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Ogren are the parents of an 8 lb. 3 oz. son, born April 9, named Roger Allen.
Captain Harold Booth of Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, was called home due to the death of his brother, Ralph Booth, 37. Ralph is also survived by his parents, a sister and another brother.
Mrs. Ralph Scott will complete the school year as fifth grade teacher as Mrs. Robert Owens will join her husband, Lt. R.E. Owens at Paris, Texas.
Mr. C.D. McIntire announces the approaching marriage of his daughter, Merlyn to William J. Cronin of Remsen.
Rev. Fred Jacobsen, pastor of Nazareth Lutheran Church her and Gethsemane Lutheran at Oyens, has accepted a call to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Graettinger, Iowa, effective within three months. They plan to move there in July.
75 Years Ago -1948
Ernest B. Rae, 55 died at the Rochester, Minn. clinic on Monday, April 12. Survivors include his wife, a son and a brother.
F.B. Wilberding purchased a 40 foot lot on the south end of Main Street on the east side. He will build a 30’ x 60’ quonset building for his seed business.
Cecil Dunn is building a new home, west of the L.P. Fitzgerald home. It will face north and Cecil hopes to move into it by the time his vacation is over.
The well drilling crew resumed operations this week on the city well. It is down about 650 feet and they hope another 30 feet should be sufficient.
Art Nielsen, janitor of the Marcus Public School has contrived an automatic side delivery lawn rake to use on the school property. He says it saves up to 75 percent on raking time.
70 Years Ago -1953
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Keleher returned home after a three month visit with their son-In-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John Hennessey at Glenview, Illinois.
Ed Douvia dropped into the Marcus News office to pay his subscription for the 53rd time. Ed is now 80 years old and came to the Marcus area in 1901.
Bob Roberts departed Tuesday evening to report for duty at the Great Lakes Naval training station.
- Marine Sgt. Larry W. Peckenschneider of Marcus arrived in San Francisco from Korea on March 31. He is spending a 35 day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Peckenschneider, here after which he will report to Cherry Point, North Carolina, for further duty.
Mrs. Don Steffen and daughter, Marcia, departed for Hawaii to join her husband who will be stationed at Honolulu for some time.
65 Years Ago -1958
Mr. and Mrs. E.V. Delaney received a short wave radio call via Omaha from their daughter, Mrs. Bob Steck in Guam. She thinks they will be back in the States in August.
Glenn Miller has been elected president of the Marcus Rotary Club to take effect in July
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Lunders and family were Easter Sunday dinner and supper guests In the Elmer Miller home at Jackson, Minn.
Linda Brady, daughter of Leo and Bernice Brady, celebrated her 10th birthday on April 4 with a family gathering.
60 Years Ago -1963
Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Deichmann are the parents of a 6 lb. 8 oz. daughter born Sunday, March31. She has been named Julie Ann and has one brother.
Meadow Star Church will have their annual Easter Sunrise services at 6:00 a.m. and breakfast will be served after the service.
Judith Ann Laws and Edmund P. Meehan, both of Marcus, were united in marriage Saturday, March 16, in St. Mary’s Chapel at Fort Riley, Kansas. Pfc. Meehan departed for overseas duty in Germany on April 7 and Judith is continuing her nursing schooling at St. Joseph’s, Sioux City.
Judith Ann Wilcox of Cleghorn has accepted a 5th grade teaching position in Spencer Independent School system for the 1963-1964 year. Judith will graduate from Buena Vista in June.
Mr. and Mrs. Elmore Chase of Meriden attended a Watkins Convention at Mason City from Sunday until Tuesday.
55 Years Ago -1968
Sandy Grauer was surprised by a group of girl friends as they gathered in the Grauer home to help her celebrate her 18th birthday.
Mr. and Mrs. Roger Nelson are the parents of a 7 lb. 5 oz. son, born Monday, April 15. He is named Samuel David and has a brother and a sister.
Ted Stoltenberg was honored on his birthday as family members gathered in the Ken-A-Bob at Storm Lake for Sunday dinner.
50 Years Ago -1973
David P. Strautz has accepted a position with the Farmer’s State Bank as an officer trainee as of March 26. He is a graduate of the University of Iowa with a degree in Economics.
Jim Olson, sixth grade student at Marcus, won the 74 lb. Junior division wrestling championship at Emmetsburg Saturday, April 7.
Dr. and Mrs. Gary Kluever of Marcus are the proud parents of a 9 lb. boy, Christopher Alan. He has a brother and a sister.
Mr. Gordon Roese accepted the contract from the Marcus Board of Education to teach summer Drivers Education.
45 Years Ago – 1978
The Marcus Sno-Birds presented a $300 check to the Marcus Fire Department to be used toward the purchase of a new rescue unit. They still need $1500.
Mr. and Mrs. Keith Grauer of Marcus are the parents of a son, Jared Keith, born March 29, weight 10 lbs. He has a sister, Carrie.
The Mayor and the Marcus City Council are initiating a tree replacement program to replace the 900 trees killed by Dutch Elm disease.
The local Marcus Girl Scouts increased their cookie orders by 33 percent a 523 box increase.
40 Years Ago –1983
Cathy Jean Tonner of LeMars and Timothy John Ludwig of Marcus were united in marriage on March 26 at LeMars St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. They are at home in Sioux City.
Rodger Renken and Brian Egger are featured in the Meriden Cleghorn Senior Spotlight.
Mary Wendt of Marcus will be featured soloist with the Mount Marty College mixed chorus and stage band on their 17th annual tour, April 17.
35 Years Ago – 1988
Steve and Mary Olson of Marcus announce the arrival of a daughter, Lindsey Jean. She was born on Friday, February 12, weight 7 lbs. 4 ozs. and has a sister, three year old Sarah.
Jan Brady, former Marcusite, and Rick McDaniel of Muscatine, Iowa are planning a July 23 wedding in Holy Name Church.
30 Years Ago – 1993
MC Jazz Band placed 1st at State for the second year in a row in Class 1-A.
Kean Mauer, 79, of Cleghorn passed away Tuesday, April 6. He is survived by his widow and three daughters.
