Staff Spotlight – Brenda Bird

Staff Light on Brenda Bird. She subbed full time last year, this is her first year teaching full time. She teaches high school Spanish, grades 9-12, levels 1-4. She grew up right here in Marcus. She wanted to be a teacher because she loves to spend time with young people. Now her children are teenagers, she wants to be more available to be involved with things that interest them.
Brenda attended Simpson College in Indianola, IA for her BA in Sociology and French. She always enjoyed studying people and relationships in society as well as languages. In 2000, she studied in Grenoble, France for a semester. She thinks speaking Spanish is a valuable skill and she wants to use her experience and talents to teach others the skill while also sharing her love for learning about other people and cultures. She loves our school and this community as much as she enjoys teaching Spanish and helping influence young people’s lives. It is especially awesome to be able to teach here in her community.
Her advice to students: “Just do the next right thing. We all make mistakes so the best we can do is try again. Be humble, apologize, and do your best to do the next right thing.” She wishes someone told her when she was in high school, “I’m not sure I would have listened…but I wish someone would have told me that I didn’t have to have it all figured out by the time I went to college, or even by the time I graduated from college.”
