130 Years Ago -1893
Mr. Bigelow of Walnut, Iowa has purchased a third interest in the Marcus Roller Mills and will take possession without delay. He will move his family to Marcus.
P.N. Brown has just completed a commodious residence in the southwest part of Marcus.
Marcus had a disastrous fire that destroyed three businesses and a residence about a $6,000 loss. Marcus is in serious need of better fire protection.
125 Years Ago -1898
Mr. and Mrs. I.M. Jackson returned home after a winters sojourn in the south.
F.A. Lewis is the new postmaster here, replacing Thomas Delaney.
F.S. Barnes was elected to treasurer and P.N. Brown was elected as a director in the local school election.
120 Years Ago -1903
Fry’s Drug Store reports a good assortment of wallpaper from 6¢ to 60¢ per double roll.
Rev. Moore of Holly Springs has accepted the pastorate of the Methodist Evangelical Church here and Simpson-Bethel.
The roads are in a very bad condition and the rural mail carriers report them almost impassable in places.
115 Years Ago – 1908
The Marcus high school basketball team defeated Fort Dodge and remains undefeated.
J.W. Nield and J. Meyer were elected as directors of the local school. F.S. Barnes was elected treasurer.
Miss Neva Wilson and Lloyd Barnes were united in marriage in the home of her parents. They will make their home on a farm near Upham, North Dakota.
110 Years Ago – 1913
John Steffen of Remsen and Miss Minnie Backhaus of Reinbeck were married at Reinbeck on February 18. They have begun housekeeping on a farm eleven miles northeast of Remsen.
Peters Bros. of Marcus became agents for the Fairbanks, Morse and Company line.
Johnson, Petty and Johnson, the Marcus Implement Men will hold a Grand Opening Friday and Saturday, March 21 and 22, to show their machinery.
Rev. G. Soe of Viborg, South Dakota, will replace Rev. P. Rasmussen as pastor of the Danish Lutheran Church here. The Soe family will move to Exira, Iowa.
Miss Laura Jensen became the bride of Carl Peterson Saturday at the Danish Lutheran Church.
Henry McQueen, who has been ill with paralysis for nearly three weeks is improving.
105 Years Ago -1918

Monday’s school election resulted in George Kirchner received 197 votes, winning over Dr. T.C. Knox.
Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Healy are the parents of a son born March 14.
P.P. Holm was elected Mayor of Marcus. Jay Peters, T.E. Herbert, George J. Kuhl, S. Londergan and M.C. Evans were named councilmen.
85 Years Ago -1938
Two tickets have been filed for the town election with T.E. Herbert as mayor on the Citizens ticket and W.W. Bass as mayor on the People’s ticket.
Richard Kenney was elected local fire chief to succeed Ray Walsh.
Mrs. Hazel Pierce of Cleghom has rented the Wm. Swart estate residence here and has moved her family here.
Arline Booth and Hosph Dessel of Washta were married February 20 in the Immaculate Conception rectory of Cherokee.
80 Years Ago – 1943
Pvt. W.J. Ewart of Camp Blanding, Florida was honorably discharged having passed the age limit. He arrived home in Marcus Saturday.
JoAnn Steveson, 11, of Quimby won first place at the Cherokee County spelling contest and will advance to the State Contest at Des Moines on April 17.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dunn moved from the Hoxsie house in the east part of town into the home owned by Joe Broblek west of Main Street.
The senior class has chosen their motto: “In ourselves the future lies.” Class colors are gold and white.
Margaret McGivern and June Carey represented Holy Name School at the annual Cherokee country spelling contest Friday.
75 Years Ago -1948
Nancy Hamman of Cleghorn won the Cherokee County spelling match and will compete in the state contest at Des Moines. Joan Mansfield, also of Cleghorn, placed second at the county level.
The Monday, March 28, city election will have three candidates for mayor and seventeen running for councilmen.
The B & W Sales Company sold a Frazer Manhattan to Fred Hohbach and Kalsers to Roger T. Leavitt and Frank McClintock.
Cpl. Leon Wallin received his discharge from the Army after one and one half years. He served eleven months at Panama.
Mr. and Mrs. Ben Hueser of Quimby are the parents of their eighth child, a 9 1/2 pound girl, named Peggy.
70 Years Ago -1953
Mr. and Mrs. Leo Bird departed for Long Beach, California to spend a few weeks with their son, Jim Bird and family. At Abilene, Kansas, the Birds had a one car accident on icy roads. They traded their damaged Nash in on a new car and continued on their trip.
About 75,000 Iowans and former Iowans attended the annual Iowa picnic at Los Angeles on February 28. Quite a number of former Marcusites were present.
Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Goodburn moved to the family farm southeast of Marcus. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Goodburn, retired from the farm and moved into Cherokee.
The Marcus Boy Scout Troop has gone into the roller skating business. They purchased 34 pair of rink skates to rent at 25¢ and will open In the Legion Hall Saturday evening.
65 Years Ago -1958
Ab Anderson has assumed the duties of night marshal a Marcus, following the resignation of Tom Carney.
Mrs. Floyd Bentz and Max Delaney each won $25 in Marcus money last Saturday evening.
Lester Donaldson, who attends Westmar College at LeMars, spent the weekend in the parental Mr. and Mrs. Harold Donaldson home at Cleghorn.
The Lawrence Slagter family moved into the Vein Barnes home in northwest Marcus, recently vacated by the Don Briggs family.
Dr. and Mrs. M.F. Joynt returned home from Phoenix, Arizona where Doc had been recuperating from a serious illness. He looks well and is back at work.
Howard Peavy was elected chief of the Marcus fire department at last Thursday’s meeting.
60 Years Ago -1963
Neither Lyle Spieler nor Lawrence Rupp were present to win $50 each in the Saturday evening Marcus money drawing. Three $25 prizes and one fifty dollar prize will be offered next week.
The local golf course drive is at $18,000 and $10,000 more is needed to meet their goal. The proposed course will be on the Christiansen farm south of town.
Mrs. Oscar Heline was called to Burlington, Colorado by the death of her brother, Frank Magee, 81. Oscar and John Heline left Friday to attend the funeral. The body will be brought to Ida Grove for burial.
55 Years Ago -1968
Postmaster Gerald A. Pallesen announced the tentative date for moving into the new post office is Sunday, March 24. The new post office is privately owned by Leo Devorak of Omaha who leases it to the department for a period of 10 years.
Fire fanned by gale force winds burned a corn crib and granary, a small tool building, and about 12,00 bushels of grain on the Gerald Woltman farm Monday.
Loren Kauffman lost the tip of his index finger in a V belt pulley on a feed grinder Saturday morning.
Knight and Lady for February and March were Susan Erickson, Duane Wittkop, Debbie Davis and Marty Irwin.
50 Years Ago -1973
The base salary of the Marcus Community School teachers was raised $150, a 4.3 increase.
Mrs. Marvin Semmens, 60, nee Adeline Treinen, passed away suddenly at Cherokee. She was born in Marcus, 1912, and married Marvin on February 19, 1938 at Marcus. She is survived by one sister. Burial was in the Marcus Holy Name Cemetery.
Jack Clarkson replaced Mary Ebert as Fire Chief of Marcus. Jack Shea is Assistant and Fred Wilkens, secretary-treasurer.
45 Years Ago – 1978
Superintendent Mitts reports there is a slight settlement of a supporting pillar in the lunchroom in the Intermediate building. Schroder Engineering Company of Sioux City reports the building is safe.
Mr. and Mrs. Milt Wurth are the proud parents of an 8 lb. 1 oz. daughter, Angela Irene, horn March 6. She has three brothers at home.
40 Years Ago –1983
Mr. and Mrs. Michael Barry of Marcus are the parents of a 6 lb. 11 oz. daughter, Megan Marie, born Wednesday, March 9.
The Meriden-Cleghorn board of education raised the base pay of teachers from $11,800 to $12,300.
35 Years Ago – 1988
The Marcus Primary building is getting a new addition. The students are watching the plans unfold from the digging the foundation and erecting the added space.
Three Marcus eighth grade boys, Kenny Drefke, Jason Ladenthin and Brad Smith were on the A.A.U. basketball team, coached by Terry Horsley, that placed third in the State of Iowa.
