Staff Spotlight – Mr. Weller

This week’s staff spotlight is John T. Weller, the Art and Yearbook teacher, at MMCRU. Mr. Weller currently teaches Grades 7-12 Art and Yearbook at both Remsen and Marcus locations. John grew up in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, he attended college at Indiana University of Pennsylvania for art education. Not wanting highschool to end, Mr. Weller chose a path that kept high school in his life, teaching. Which he has been currently teaching for about 20-25 years. John enjoys teaching because high school graduation is a rite of passage, and as an educator, he loves to help guide students toward this right of passage/a future. A future that is not only responsible, but also educated, healthy, and happy. Something he wishes someone would have told him when he was in highschool, is how large the world is beyond your hometown. When asked what advice he would give to students, Mr. Weller responded with, “Mathematics, art, literature, physics, history, sports – embrace all the subjects presented to you in high school, bar none. Be a person who loves all of your classes. And don’t let the personality of this or that teacher be too large a factor in your love for each of your classes. As we become more educated, more points of reference become available to us which we can use to see, understand, describe, explain, and control our world. If you will become an engineer, also embrace literature. If you will become a law enforcement agent, also embrace economics. If you will become a human resource officer, also embrace chemistry.”
